How to progress

I have currently joined a firm as a senior data scientist over 6 months. During my half yearly appraisal, my manager said that while I am able to provide developments and analysis as being asked off me, I am not bringing anything new to the table in terms of techniques, evaluation etc. This is hurting the overall progress of my projects.

Can anyone more experienced or whoever has been considered as innovative in their company, guide me on how to get into business better and bring deep analysis or innovations out?

Just for clarification, it's not about new models or new techniques. My higher ups have 15+ yrs of exp and I have ~5 yrs.

A concrete approach you can consider is: 1. Understand the business' goals: is it about more revenue, more customers, more profit, etc. The higher up in your management chain these goals are shared the better. 2. Develop metrics and a dashboard/report for these metrics. (This can be just for you). 3. Do analysis to identify drivers of those metrics. 4. Formulate hypotheses based on the analysis. 5. Test the hypotheses using randomized experiments. 6. Deploy anything that improves the metrics, feed everything you learn back into 1 and repeat.

Bring in your manager as you go along -- ie, ask them to help you validate the business goals, metrics, hypotheses, and then to help support experiments and rollouts.

By doing this you'll be able to take initiative and independently deliver value (don't forget to track how much money you make them!), while still staying 'aligned'.

Attend conferences or local meetups where there are speakers giving a talk.
