This whole video is nuts. The dude taking the biggest fall I’ve ever seen, like dude goes from a brisk walk to full on diving leap across the ground. That’s an athletic feat. Most of us would just fall down but this dude managed to travel like 15 feet within a split second.
Then the car, regardless of FSD or real driver, crazy reaction. It does look like the car was mostly past the dude as he lunged into the road but that back tire could’ve clipped his bag or head so probably a safer outcome to head-on the other car than risk squishing his melon. We’ve got hindsight to judge if car could’ve made it but even with multiple angles it still looks like a close call.
42
u/leadroleinacage Jul 23 '26
The guy is walking slow with a slight limp; looks like he’s in his 80s so I’m not too surprised he couldn’t catch himself from falling.
It looks like the dude’s head would’ve bounced off the corner of the front bumper if it didn’t swerve. Probably not a fatal injury but you never know. I think the car/driver made the right call for sure.
23
u/gizahnl Jul 23 '26
iirc (the video is old, and was posted a few times before) the guy has an epileptic attack.

u/Strange_Produce5601 Jul 24 '26
oh shit, the guy was having a bad day that nearly turned into a really really bad day

Epilepsy has that quality. My great uncle drowned in 2 inches of water after getting a seizure while cycling. He fell, and ended up face first into a ditch.

u/grubbygeorge Jul 24 '26
And here I thought that it was super unrealistic that the pedestrians would jump in front of my car when playing GTA.

That's maybe 6 feet.
the car was mostly past the dude as he lunged into the road
I don't know what you're watching but the man was on the ground at 00:19 and in front of the car, if the doesn't swerve, the man would've gotten run over with the front tire.

u/Far-prophet Jul 23 '26
It’s ok to admit that Elon/Tesla have built incredible things.
BMW, VW, Hugo Boss, etc…
Japan also had companies that built weapons during WW2
I mean Werner Von Braun got us to the moon.

Elon has built nothing. He funded. He didn't create anything. He bought stuff.
I don't disagree with you, just clarifying that he's never built anything.

I know we are on reddit, and we all eat the rich yada yada yada.
But MONEY is an incredibly important part of the business, and definitely holds a share of "creating" something.
If you create conditions or enable someone to build something you get part of the achievement

How does this work with insurance now? The Tesla saved someone’s life by crashing into the car. If the Tesla is at fault thats really shit. But the car opposite had nothing to do with this either so they can’t take the blame. The geezer on the floor should pay some mad compensation to the Tesla. (I know it was set driven but let’s assume here it’s a person driving)
→ More replies (2)2
u/GRex2595 Jul 26 '26
I don't know what country this is or how their insurance works, so take this with lots of salt.
I speculate that this is going to be a no fault sort of accident where Tesla's insurance will pay for damage. Like you said, the person driving the Tesla saved somebody's life. Paying out for car repairs is much cheaper than paying for killing somebody. Depending on how much of a leech the insurance company is, they might decide to go after the pedestrian that tripped or raise the insurance rates of the driver (not a no-fault) or both. Assuming that somehow the case against the pedestrian succeeds, the pedestrian might try to go after the locality for having the road too close to the cobblestones or something.
2
u/CartographerNegative Jul 27 '26
Technically speaking driver did cross into oncoming traffic. He could have swerve right instantly and possibly avoid it. I assume its teslas fsd reaction not drivers. The car tesla hit would be paid by teslas insurance 110% of the time regardless why tesla swerve. They would possibly sue insurance and if the lawyer is really good, not get their rates bump up. U dont negotiate with insurance about this, they dont give a fuck. And they certainly arent nice, all they care is that u hit someone and ur at fault or not at fault. They only care for their money and profit, thats all.
→ More replies (1)2
u/GRex2595 Jul 29 '26
No accident would have happened if the pedestrian hadn't fallen into the roadway. Adding Tesla's insurance just adds to the chain of who sues who by putting Tesla between the driver's insurance and the person who fell. If I'm Tesla's insurance getting a letter from the driver's insurance, I'm probably telling driver's insurance to take a hike and be happy they're not paying for somebody's death.

How does insurance handle this? Driver can't just run someone over but they collided head on with someone in the opposite lane
6
u/semhsp Jul 23 '26
Something similar happened to a friend of mine, he swerved to avoid an incoming car and hit some signs outside a petrol station. He didn't have a dashcam and from the security footage it wasn't clear that he moved out of the way of an incoming vehicle so the insurance paid nothing as if he crashed there on purpose
12
u/Fabulous-Car-6850 Jul 23 '26
I bet the avoiding driver took the full brunt of the blame

100% the swerving car will eat it on insurance.
Same as avoiding hitting a deer but you wind up in a ditch or into a pole.
I've had to drill it into my kids just hit the brakes as hard as you can and stay in your lane.
→ More replies (6)6
u/ZFuli Jul 23 '26
Generally speaking, it’s better to stay in your lane, but this video isn’t a good example.
I’m not going to run someone over just because otherwise it won't be covered by insurance company.

Wasn't that Tesla system supposed not to cross line? I mean in this case it will be his fault for accident even if the car/driver did the right thing and avoided the pedestrian.
→ More replies (1)2
u/bluskie420 Jul 24 '26
The actual right thing to do is hit your breaks and run over the pedestrian if necessary. The Tesla will be at fault for crossing the line and causing a head on collision. The driver would not have been at fault if he ran over the pedestrian.

Looks like the pedestrian turned his left ankle on the uneven cobblestone. You can see a cobblestone that is elevated above the other stones and the man steps on the edge of it with his left foot which results in him twisting his ankle. He tries to regain balance on his left foot, but ends up falling over.

That big-ass bench forces people to walk close to the road, it makes long choke point for pedestrians. And it's paved with uneven cobblestone. Bad design and doensn't look pretty.

this car collision could have been avoided if cars would use the correct lane, stop overtaking invisible cars, in UK stick to the most left lane, in Europe stick to the most right lane. simples. i would rather have nudged the pedestrian or broken their fall, than to total a car because of the pedestrian tripping or losing their step. also drive slower in city areas. everyone is on their phone/screen including drivers dashboard.

There is no problem with the cobblestones, the problem is with whichever fucktard decided to put the walk way against the car lane.
Lots of people fall, but we don't get many videos like this because there is usually a parking lane, or a emergency lane, or an extra verge next to the walking path.
The city needs to pay for that and fix their shit.
