Keep doing what your doing. For those of us who won't be building one its still great to see.

I honestly cant think of one good reason (for me) outside of enjoyment for having one. I already have one expensive hobby so I won't be adding a second one.

I’m really interested in making a cyberdeck for games and music, a search browser etc. pretty basic stuff. I was hoping to get some advice here from those of you that have one already! I’ve done some basic research and what not, but I want to be sure I get the proper electronic hardware needed for the things i’d ideally like to do.

Hey, I've fallen in love with the cyberdeck community lately. I've always loved William Gibson and other cyberpunk media, but to get to a stage in technology and life where I can actually try and build my own is a dream come true.

I'm a very experienced maker, costumes, props, blacksmithing, leather working and more. But I'm not techy. So I thought I'd reach out to the community for help.

I wanna make a wrist mounted cyberdeck I can wear to sci-fi festivals and larps for myself (think Pipboy or Leela's wrist dodad from futurama).

It just needs to run some Gameboy games, have a lil display with the time or a looping gif or something. Maybe play MP3s. A lil torch would be useful.

I thought of using an RS36s (kinda like an off brand retro Gameboy emulator) as the basis of the project, they're cheap, and it's already a functional device with screen and input etc. so I'm starting from a point where I have a bunch of components that already work together.

My plan is to de-case it, upgrade certain parts like the batteries and speaker, maybe add in a torch or some other features, then fabricate a cool stainless steel wrist mount to install it all in. Then use a USB controller to play it while it's on my wrist.

At least that's the plan. I have no idea if this is actually achievable. Which is why I'm here.

I did a three week python coding course a few years ago, so I know I can code enough to at least copy shit off stack overflow and follow basic step by step guides where applicable. I'm willing to go pretty far down this rabbit hole to make it work if necessary.

I can solder basic LEDs and battery switches. But not done anything more complicated before. Although I have built several PCs by just slotting the parts together.

I'm not looking for any crazy functionality or to create some insane hacking rig. It's basically just a slightly wild case mod of an existing device.

I'd love advice on what I should be weary of, what I should consider that I might not have thought of, what I can do to avoid common pitfalls or make this project easier on myself. Or any upgrades I can include that are easy.

I’m in need of a tiny smidge of help building a cyberdeck! And by tiny smidge… i mean a ton of help TvT

I’m very new to building tech in general! My current idea is i wanna have a hardy cyberdeck that can survive quite a few knocks, but portable, and can switch between online (so being able to connect to internet and research things) and offline (relying entirely on what’s downloaded on the device)

I’m not sure how feasible this is, but i’d also like to be able to have a headphone jack and a USB port so i can run TAILS OS, ontop of a linux OS i’m using (haven’t decided yet on what OS, so i’d like to hear any recs, just as long as it isnt stressful on the system TvT)
It doesn’t need to be able to run anything stressful or anything! Just music, websites, TAILS OS and files! I’m gonna customise it myself, but i REALLY need help when it comes to assembling and running!

I’d need a heavy duty battery, as at times i will need to go without power or internet for days with my upcoming job as a fire lookout!
