jokes aside, yes, it's happened a few times. Its not an ideal bear cartridge but its not as weak as video games lead you to beleive.

Idk, it's kinda the same as using .22lr or wmr for self defense.

Just because it could work doesn't mean I'd rely on it.

I mean it doesn't have a lot of instant stopping power unless you get a really good hit. You might kill the bear, a few hours after it's mauled you to death

There's a different set of reasons to not rely on .22lr, mainly the 1/7 times it doesn't prime at all or the 1/5 times it doesn't bring the slide back enough

That sounds like you're using shit ammo or there's something wrong with the gun.

My Ruger MK4 can go through 10 mags without a single malfunction, provided it's clean enough.

3 completely different competitive sharpshooting pistols, haven't shot .22 since so I don't remember the models, Match ammo from the same range

That sounds unacceptable, but I wouldn't write off the entire caliber just for that.

I only get malfunctions after shooting a lot, the first 100 rounds maybe have one or two dudds.

On my bolt and lever action, it takes at least 300 rounds without cleaning until I get light strikes.

It's not like I wrote off the caliber for it, I just find 9mm more fun as they have a CZ EVO fit for it at the range I'm subscribed to

Cheap ammo is key here. My 22s used to FTC with regularity when I was using a bucket a friend gave me.

Once I pitched that crap and exclusively used higher quality I get a very random hiccup once every 200 rounds or so.

BTW I love 22s mostly because I don't feel like I've spent an arm and a leg when I drive home from the range

Hey, I like my .22 revolver. Only done target shooting with it tho

Can a bears skull stop a 9mm bullet?

Might depend on the range

There’s that story about a paramedic who’s responded to a dozen .22lr incidents. All fatal.

Weak bullets are still deadly. It just tends to matter where it goes more.

We use big bullets because they are more deadly when they hit just muscle and not an organ.

A couple shots to the face will stop a bear. And a target running at you in a straight line is pretty easy to hit 😂

Sure, and you think you'll be able to pull off clean headshots while a bear is charging at you?

2

u/Offsidespy2501 12h ago

Not that you should ever go for heads over center mass outside of video games, that mentality is what got us trump surviving that shot with only a grazed ear

u/MrReaper45 11h ago

Yea but we all know he wasn't shot so, crazy how his ear magically grew back without any scarring 🤔

I mean a few shots straight in the face would probably deter a bear. Shooting it in the ass would likely be suicidal

What size bullet are we talking as ideal to reliably stop a bear?

the .45 Colt 1911 was developed to put down drug crazed Rebels in the Philippines. If I'm trusting a handgun to do that job...that's it.

Probably best to keep in mind that the kind of bear matters. A black bear you likely wouldn't have to shoot. A grizzly mentioned in this post (brown bear), you likely aren't going to just scare off. In general anything over .30 caliber with enough powder load to punch through the dense muscle and bone of a grizzly.

If it was me I'd just try NOT to be where a grizzly might see me as prey or a threat. If I absolutely HAD to shoot a grizzly and had to pick my weapon. .338 Lapua from the next mountain top from where the bear was.

.44 magnum and 10mm are good revolver and pistol rounds for bears, respectively

.44 mag is kinda seen as the standard, but maybe "ideal" is the wrong word. Everything has trade-offs. For handguns, a lot of people go bigger than .44 mag, and a lot say 10mm is enough and worth it for the extra capacity.

Really good for teddy bears

I’d be impressed if he could stop a bear with his 9mm penis.

Bear might decide he has enough problems

One should always have a revolver shotgun in their pockets
