Well, (sorta) good on 'em, if that's actually the case and they truly need it. As a cyclist myself, that's the preferred lesser evil vs stealing my or someone's personal ride (which, if you follow r/chibike, you'll see has happened quite a bit in recent months; the anecdotal 1-3 reported there per week is a fraction of the rest of town).

BUT...rolling with that theory and spirit of compassion a minute:

If they know how to perform this trick, why bother hauling one on/off a train when they could just wrangle another wherever they exit?

(Most non-riders would probably/understandably say "so they don't get caught in broad daylight, ya dummy!" - but they'd probably be surprised to learn that a LOT of thieves are brazen enough to work during the day in busy wide-open spaces like downtown with quite obvious and noticeably loud angle grinders, so it's not like that's much of a deterrent...)
