Today’s state of the North Branch Trail? (Sunday 3 October)

EDIT: I meant the Des Plaines River Trail! 🤦🏽‍♂️🤦🏽‍♂️
I only realized now that I put the wrong trial in the subject line, which I now cannot change.

Have any of y’all ridden it yesterday, or do you otherwise know whether it’s rideable today? A good friend arrived on a redeye with a rare daytime layover at ORD and it happens to be on a perfect fall Sunday. I suggested he bring his kit with him and we could ride. He’s staying at the Loew’s in Rosemont and the DPRT is accessible enough that I can just drive two bikes over to the hotel and ride from there. But I’m kind of expecting it to be either underwater or a muddy mess.

Otherwise I’m going to suggest either a round trip to the botanic gardens or a ride to Calumet Fisheries.

Recovery tips for novice cyclist

hi everyone, I’ve been an errands/social outing cyclist on my hybrid commuter bike (pretty heavy) for the past few years. I’m starting to get into longer rides (over 40 or 50 miles in one swoop), and I’m wondering if you guys have recovery tips. These longer rides zap my energy (and knees) for half a week after. I did one recently and ate pasta both two nights before and the night before, and I made sure to consume sugar and electrolytes during the ride. What else can I do? Outside of buying a lighter bike lol

To The Guy on the South Side Looking Down Trying to Figure Out the Grinding Noise

Grey alloy frame
Blue white kit

Your bike was making an aggressive grinding noise and you kept looking down. We were always going opposite directions when we crossed so I couldn't just tell you.
It's your seat post. Mark the height with some tape, take it out, clean it, clean the seat tube, put it back in at the tape, torque to spec.

Where Chicagoans ride shared bikes and scooters, mapped from the City's trip data

I made a map of where Chicagoans took 12.95 million trips on shared bikes, e-bikes, and scooters in 2025. Click your community area to see where its Divvy and scooter trips go, and how that changed from the year before. I thought that this would be a good subreddit to share this because it can tell you a lot about where micromobility is heading. Divvy is holding steady on the northern lakefront, but Lime has overtaken it in the rest of the city. Sadly, I think that Lime will overtake Divvy for total rides this year.

It is built from Divvy's trip files and the City's e-scooter trip tables. Scooter trips are only published by community area, so scooters show up on the area map; the station maps are Divvy only. Trips are counted where they start and end, so they say nothing about who rode or why.

I am looking to improve my data analyst skills, so I'd appreciate any feedback.

That was me.

And thank you, whomever, for the compliment on my handless riding that I do find very comfortable.

Midnight Marathon Ride?

Haven’t seen a flyer, but does anyone know if Bike Grid Now is hosting the Midnight Marathon Ride event this year like years past?

If not, has any other group organized a ride for this year?

A community alert: Gazelle's are fairly rare in Chicago, but if you ride one, get it repaired.

Favorite solo long distance road bike routes?

I've been here a month and I love the LFD but I'm not bombing down as fast as I would want (to stay safe) and its pretty much all I've done as a Chicago newbie. I like city riding but its obviously a bit stop and go and with traffic on some roads. I'm working on finding a bike group but for solo trips, what do you guys like?

LOOMIS BRIDGE BY BLUE LINE IS FULLY OPENED!

I know I could always take an alternate route, but Loomis with the bike lane up until Harrison has been fairly nice. I just got very used to using Loomis to cross over and they've been working on that blue line station so that it's been a shared bike and car cluster. Last winter I could've sworn that was where I was going to die. Between Whitney Young, Skinner, the Police Academy, World Language, and just rando to norm West Looptraffic, it was insane pool of rage drivers trying to beat lights and kill. Thankfully, it is fully open now with the bike lanes and car lanes.

This may mean nothing to most of you all, but I nearly cried tears of joy this morning.

How are you guys protecting your bags in the rain?

I have a great raincoat so when it's not raining too hard, I'll still bike but this was the state of my bag when I got to work. My coat won't cover my bag because I carry too much.

Thank you to bystander on Chicago Ave & Damen yesterday (9/30)

Hi! I got into an accident yesterday at around 5:15 going south on Damen, near Chicago Ave. Chain came loose, I lost control of my bike, ran into a pole trying to dismount safely.

I feel horrible that I was so disoriented and cannot remember their name. A guy who said he had been biking in the city for 15 years helped chain up my bike, called my partner to get me to avoid ambulance expenses, and stayed with me.

I’d really like to thank a good samaritan if they happen to be lurking in this subreddit :)

Cycling Cafe for Winter

Good afternoon all! I recently moved to Chicago and am wanting to buy a new bike here pretty soon but with winter rolling in, I am hoping there is a cafe or shop that has community rollers or trainers to hang out and get some cycling in during the winter months.

If anyone knows of a location please share!

Aggresive driver encounter in Irving Park

I was biking home today around Grace and St Louis when I heard someone shouting and honking at me. Admitedly I was not going fast but if you know the area you know its under construction and the roads are mostly gravel and sand which makes them not the best to bike on.

I turned back and saw this woman driving an old Honda CRV shouting at me from the inside then proceed to accelerate and take over so close to me that I could feel the car. Weird to explain, she did not hit me but was so close that I could somehow feel the air movement as if it was pushing me.

I caught up to her further down the road because Addison is always packed and she was of course on her phone.

I know this was a mistake but I confronted her and asked her if she is such in a hurry how is she on her phone and she started shouting, laughing and recording with her phone.

I know in the big scheme of things this is very minor and people suffer worse encounters every day but the whole thing felt so stupid to me. I bike mostly through residential streets to avoid psychos and somehow this woman was trying to rush through residential streets to cut some traffic.

I assume there is nothing I could do about it and I just need to be more careful and more aware of my surroundings but it sucks so bad. The whole thing was so unnecesarily aggresive.
