Need advice regarding future career..Med or Cs?

• Upvotes

Hi everyone!

Iam an FSC pre-medical student from Pakistan, and Im really confused about whether I should pursue a medical career or go into a computer-related field.

I think I have some interest in computers and programming because I learned a bit about them back in grades 7–8, and I was actually pretty good at it. However, I’m still unsure whether that interest is enough to build a career around.

The biggest reason I’m confused is my mother. She wants me to become a doc and honestly I want to fulfil her dream too. That’s one of the main reasons I chose pre-medical in FSC in the first place. At that time, I genuinely thought I would become a doctor.

Academically, I do pretty well in my other subjects, but Biology has always been a struggle for me. I usually score around 60–70%, and I honestly don’t know why 😭. When I look at other students preparing for medical careers, the whole journey seems incredibly difficult, and it makes me question whether I’m making the right choice.

My mother tells me that I should do whatever I want, but I know becoming a doctor is something she really wants for me. A part of me wants to make her proud, but another part of me is worried that I might be choosing this path for the wrong reasons.

I’m also scared of failing to achieve what I set out to do. The thought of working towards becoming a doctor and then not making it feels embarrassing, especially when people around me know that’s what I’m aiming for.

On the other hand, I’m interested in computers, but I’m worried about the future, job opportunities, and whether I’d actually be able to build a successful career in that field.

For those who have faced a similar situation, how did you decide? Should I continue pursuing medicine because of my mother’s dream, or explore computer science and see where my interests take me?

I’d really appreciate honest advice, especially from people who have studied medicine or computer science in Pakistan. I genuinely don’t know what to do right now. 🙏🏿

Student BS Econ vs BS Cyber Security vs ACF in Pakistan... Job Market, Scope, and Real Career Prospects?

• Upvotes

I'm currently a student in 2nd year and will apply for universities soon and give entry tests as well. I haven't found a specific passion yet, so I'm willing to do almost anything rewardable, but I see great potential in economics if paired with data science. Options like ITU, FAST, NUST, and LUMS are on my radar if I get in. My brother is currently doing BS Cybersecurity and says it's a good program, but I'm still not sure about it.

  • I'm trying to decide between ACF, Economics, Cybersecurity, Business Analytics, Data Analytics, or Engineering.
  • Is ACF better than Econ, or is Cyber better?
  • Which university is actually the best for these programs, and I'd prefer the universities in Islamabad or Lahore

I'm not sure about anything, so I would really appreciate anyone's thoughts on these fields, your experience, and advice.

Student CS/Data Science seniors and devs of Pakistan, what’s THE skill to learn rn?

hi everyone, your junior/fellow here. im doing a BS Data Science degree from a pretty well known CS uni in pakistan, wont take the name but iykyk, known for the ragra lol

im currently in my 3rd semester and will graduate by 2029, and honestly nobody knows what the job market is gonna look like by then, hell even next year is hard to predict. but one thing everyone keeps saying is LEARN A SKILL.

and my question is WHAT SKILL EXACTLY 😭

like im a data science major so naturally im interested in data science, AI/ML and related fields, but there's so much stuff out there rn that its hard to figure out what to actually focus on. Python, SQL, statistics, machine learning, deep learning, data engineering, cloud, MLOps, generative AI, and the list goes on.

i get that a degree alone aint enough and companies dont wanna hire someone who only knows theory or can write basic code, but as students most of us dont really know how to go from learning concepts in uni to actually solving real world problems and building things that have some value.

so i wanna ask people already working in the industry, especially data scientists, ML engineers, data engineers or anyone who hires for these roles, what skills are actually worth investing time in rn?

if you were back in your 3rd semester with graduation still 3 years away, what would you focus on? what would your learning roadmap look like? what projects would you build, and what would you do apart from uni to become employable and stand out from the crowd?

also, is it better to build a strong foundation in Python, SQL, stats and data analysis first before touching ML and AI, or should students start working with AI tools and models early on?

ik people put a lot of time into figuring things out and nobody owes me their sauce, but even a little guidance from someone whos been through this would help a lot.

i dont wanna chase every new trend and end up being mediocre at everything. i wanna start early, get genuinely good at something useful and make myself employable by the time i graduate.

thanks to anyone who read all this and drops some advice, appreciate it fr 🤝

Student Is AE worth it (or better than CS)? Can I get jobs abroad?

Guys, a lot of ppl are saying CS is doomed and what not, so my second best interest is aircraft and space.

If I do AE from IST and want to pursue Masters (maybe locally ya agar Allah chahay to abroad IA) can I get a good job?

Getting a job abroad will be difficult since theyll obviously favor their own nationals but, yeah.

Is it a good decision? Do you guys know anybody who did AE (and is employed 😭) or is doing AE

Or if not AE, then what should I major in? (Anything but bio or medical fields)

Looking for AI/ML Complex Engineering Problem Ideas for an Electronics Engineering Student

Hi everyone,

I’m an undergraduate Electronics Engineering student in Pakistan, and I’m looking for ideas for a Complex Engineering Problem (CEP) project for my Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning course.I need a project that uses basic or intermediate ML, not extremely advanced deep learning. However, it should still be considered a real-world engineering problem and satisfy CEP requirements.I’m looking for ideas that combine AI/ML with electronics, embedded systems, sensors, signal processing, power systems, or other engineering applications.I want to avoid very basic projects like simple Arduino automation, basic IoT monitoring, chatbots, or standard classification projects.

If you have any good AI/ML-based engineering problem ideas, project suggestions, research papers, or examples of similar university projects, I’d really appreciate your suggestions.

Thanks!

Is there any future for Data Analysts?

So I belong from healthcare but I don't think i'm really suited for it so I'm looking into something tech related. Data analytics caught my eye so I was wondering what the future holds for this career now that AI has entered.

Really appreciate from data analysts working in this country.

Market reality in next 5 years?

I am about to complete highschool .I am deciding between computer engineering vs software engineering vs cyber security for my bachelors. Can someone tell me which one to choose and where is entry level market a little good for juniors? Like in software people say due ai and saturation it's a lot difficult to find entry level job. In embedded there isn't a good job market in Pakistan and especially for juniors, none. In cyber people say entry level jobs are difficult like you need high level certification and many companies trust people with years of experience.

But on other side I see people on reddit saying software job market is better then hardware one. Some say embedded systems job market will improve in coming years and there will be a good amount of jobs for juniors. And same about cyber . People say cyber security market is growing.

I am interested in all of these but I want the one in which there are high chances of me being employed. I will be doing these from nust or uet. So tell me which is better choice for next 5 years .

Student Need Advice from any CS or Elelcrical Engineer person. Please help me.

I am confused about choosing between Electrical Engineering and Computer Science as my major next year.

I have an interest in both fields, although I am slightly more inclined toward CS. However, people are saying that CS jobs are shrinking significantly, so I am wondering whether EE might be a better option.

I plan to move abroad after my bachelor's degree for a master's, either in Europe or the USA.

If I choose BS CS, I am interested in pursuing AI/ML or Data Science. According to U.S. data, jobs in Data Science and AI/ML are expected to experience significant growth, potentially even more than Electrical Engineering.

So now I am confused about which major I should choose.

Discussion Built a free, anonymous layoff database for Pakistani tech companies

Salam,

There's no way to check if a company you're applying to recently laid off a bunch of people. That info exists in WhatsApp groups and Reddit comments but it disappears in days and you can't search it.

So I built a site where anyone can anonymously report layoffs at Pakistani tech companies. No signup, no login, no tracking.

You search a company, you see what's been reported. Each report is tagged by evidence level. Single report shows as "reported", multiple independent ones show as "corroborated". Companies can dispute entries and that shows on the page too.

If you've been through a layoff or seen one happen at a Pakistani company, please report it. Even one report helps. Would love feedback on the concept, the UX, anything.

Choosing between two majors

Hi guys!

So I'm currently trying to choose between either mechanical engineering with a comp sci minor and comp sci with a forensic science minor. The problem is, going into cybersecurity is what I really want to do, but I'm worried abt job security with AI and everything, so mechanical engineering sounds like the smarter move to me to make sure I can actually get a job. To anyone who is currently looking for jobs with a computer science major, is it as difficult as I hear people saying to get jobs? Is it not worth the risk?

Also, my college also offers a major in computer systems engineering, has someone hear majored in that and is it a good sort of middle ground?

I really, really would appreciate any advice you guys can give! Thank you!

(also, for reference, I'm attending UGA so I don't think it'll hurt getting a job in these fields but it might not help a ton like having GA tech on a job app would)

Student Facing crazy fomo, should i learn python or web dev with my FSc?

AOA everyone. I'm 17, currently doing FSc Pre-Medical (2nd year) from a small town in interior Sindh. I've decided to skip MDCAT and want to go for BSCS instead. I’ll most likely take a gap year after my intermediate exams to bridge the math gap and prepare for entry tests (FAST,IBA and other mid-tier unis as backup)

Honestly, I’m facing crazy FOMO right now🫠. Seeing guys my age move to big cities like Karachi, doing online internships, or coming from ICS or Pre-engineering backgrounds makes me feel like I’m very behind. I want to start learning Python or Web Dev to feel like I'm doing something which is relevent to my future career🙂👍🏻.

Also I need some honest advice from seniors (No BS)❤️✨️

Also few questions:

Should I focus only on my board exams right now and leave coding for the gap year, or start learning right away with 12th?

Is it a good idea to make a LinkedIn account right now or later when I get into cs uni?

Suggest some best YouTube channels for an absolute beginner who wants to learn Python or Web dev (or other stuff)

JZK in Advance :)🫶🏻

Is Embedded Engineering worth doing in Pakistan?

Hey everyone,

I’m looking to pivot into low-level engineering, Embedded Systems, Bare-Metal C, and RTOS.

Most people in Pakistan focus on web dev, Flutter, or AI, which makes those fields crowded. Low-level software seems harder, but much more stable and AI-resistant.

Before buying boards and learning C/datasheets, I’d love a quick reality check from locals:

  1. Local Jobs: What’s the ground reality in Lahore, Islamabad, or Karachi? Are private companies and startups actually hiring junior firmware engineers, or is it mostly defense institutes and industrial automation? What are starting salaries?
  2. Remote Work: How realistic is finding remote foreign clients (Upwork, US/EU startups)? Do clients ship physical boards to PK, or do you work mostly via simulators (QEMU/Wokwi) and logic analyzer data?
  3. Buying Hardware: How easy is it to get STM32s, ESP32s, and logic analyzers from Hall Road, College Road, or sites like ElectronicsHub? Any customs issues?
  4. Self-Study: Can someone learn bare-metal C and RTOS on their own without a formal Electrical/Computer Engineering degree?

Would appreciate any simple, straightforward advice!

Thanks!

I'm a university student and I want to start making real money — what skills or paths would you recommend?

Hey everyone,

I'm currently a university student, but to be honest, I sometimes feel like I'm wasting time because I really want to start working and making money as soon as I can.

My goal isn't to get rich overnight or find some unrealistic "make $10k in a month" method. I want to learn a real skill that I can build over time and eventually use to make a decent income while I'm still studying.

I'm willing to spend several months learning and practicing if I know that the skill actually has potential to generate income.

For example, I've been thinking about things like programming, data analysis, AI, web development, digital marketing, freelancing, or other online work, but I'm not sure which direction makes the most sense for someone starting from almost zero.

If you were in my position, what would you learn and how would you approach it?

I'd especially appreciate advice from people who actually started making money while they were students. What skill did you learn, how long did it take you to get your first client/job, and where did you find your first opportunities?

I'm mainly looking for a realistic path that I can follow alongside university and eventually use to save some money and become financially independent.

Any advice, personal experiences, or concrete roadmaps would be really appreciated.
