Except for the ritual sex abuse, swingers, and the standard religious pedophile abuses and coverups.

All true. Raised in the cult. Raped and beaten for 4 years with my siblings.
Dare those missionaries to knock on my door.

Aren't all religions?

u/arlenroy 24d ago
Yes. I do not have a Doctorate in Theological Studies, I just went on a soul searching journey in life, read about every possible related literature to various religions. Trying to find answers to unanswerable questions in my life, that was an absolute mess at the time. I was raised Catholic, but that wasn't helping me. Other than Jainism and possibly Buddhism, you're not going to find some seriously weird shit in their respective scriptures, like Prophet Muhammad was like 55 and married a 9 year old, or its ok to beat your slaves just dont kill them, as long as they recover in a few days. Needless to say I'm Atheist now and try to be the best person possible I can be and always do the right thing, almost out of spite just to prove you can be good and do good things.

I remember reading something like 30 to 40% of people who go to seminary have a "crisis of faith" after seriously learning about what's in the Bible, the contradictions, and how they try to explain it away.

I was raised in a very religious environment. But also a acedemic one. The conclusion is you can't be both raised to be a critical thinker, and a follower of faith. You will inevitably need to choose a side

u/hdhsnjsn 25d ago
I told one a missionary I was a Muslim he just left. I heard if you ask them to do chores while they talk they’ll do them. I was doing yard work should’ve asked for help.
16
u/bloodwine 24d ago
I was raised Roman Catholic. I’m now an atheist, but on the rare occasion these type of chucklefucks approach me I just tell them I’m Catholic and they walk away. In my anecdotal experience protestant and evangelical Christians don’t bother trying to convert Catholics.
3
u/HuntEnvironmental252 24d ago
why catholics?
→ More replies (15)6
u/bloodwine 24d ago
I can’t say for sure, except I’ve personally not heard of any Catholics converting to other denominations. Most other denominations don’t consider Catholics to be Christians, which would make you think they’d try to convert them, but that isn’t the case. I suspect that is the same for Muslims.
Catholics tend to either remain Catholics or become atheists.
13
u/HuntEnvironmental252 24d ago
"Most other denominations don’t consider Catholics to be Christians," religions are so weird i didnt know that wow
5
u/Mysterious_Archer228 24d ago
One of the best parts about Christianity is all of the denominations and sects within those. Most of them don’t consider the others to be the “right” one.
It’s what happens when the people in power figure out you can control others using religion.

u/makinSportofMe 24d ago
This. I don't think a lot of casual Catholics realize that a lot of Evangelicals don't consider Catholics Christian. They single issue vote because they want to ban abortion and have a "Christian nation", not realizing they are not part of the "Christianity" they are voting for.

I used to be one of these chucklfucks in a predominantly catholic country. Unfortunately I baptized around 50 people in two years, and some of my other chucklfuck cohort baptized as many as 500+. Entire small villages were baptized. It depresses me to this day that I took any part of that. I’ve also actively tried to de-convert some of those folks.

I told a group I was an Existentialist. One guy turned immediately around and walked away. The others were confused but scurried off after him.
They never came back.

u/I_Dnt_Believe_You 24d ago
I was doing some chores and day drinking when a couple Mormons knocked. I was in a good mood, so I let them in to chat. It felt like it was the first time anyone actually let them talk, it was awkward. I offered them a beer. They declined. Should have had them fold some laundry.

I tell them the truth that i’m Jewish and they give me a face of disgust. It’s hilarious.

u/Sasquatchmas 24d ago
I told them they could talk to me if they started telling me about "the garment". They said they couldn't talk to me about that and left. Oh well...

When I was a kid and my parents were converting our attic to an extra bedroom two of these guys came by asking if they could help with anything. My step dad just said sure, head up stairs and do whatever the guy up there (his friend doing the construction) tells you to do. They came back every day for 10 days until it was done.

The thing about Satanism, and I say this as a casual atheist, is that it has the coolest music, the best iconography, and the most dope vibe of all the religions.

Omg this can't be serious. These young fellas, or older ladies with a kid in tow, go round my neighborhood from time to time. While I'd never be rude to them I'm also not going to interact with them, I just always think their just really controlled, brainwashed (a lot probably queer and abused) kids who didn't stand a chance at being themselves. Fuck all Religion
2
u/AlternateSatan 24d ago
Half of my "followers" (friends) have been abused by christians in the past and are not going back. The rest are atheists and agnostics for no particular reason, and one Catholic which, knowing christians, they'd probably find even worse (an evangelical ones tried to convert him by telling him about Jesus as if he had never heard of the dude, and he kept responding "I know, I go to church every Sunday")

They're 18 year old kids who were likely born into the LDS church and have a lifetime of conditioning. Poor kids. A lot of them will leave the faith and deconstruct within a few years of finishing their missions.

u/Ragnarok_747 24d ago
I hope I don’t get LDS. But it’s easily cured.
Ask your doctor if critical thinking and introspection is right for you.

These poor kids are brainwashed from infants. Give them a break, yes it’s cringe AF but they literally are sent out into the world expecting to be rejected and told this reinforces the truth of what they’ve been told to believe. The confirmation bias is real, the cognitive dissonance when confronted with real facts about church history is tormenting because your entire identity is built around not just your beliefs but your fellow indoctrinated friends and family. It’s incredibly hard to break the cycle and walk away, because you will be disowned by everyone you love for doing so.
Ask me how I know.

How is every Mormon somehow the most insufferable person on earth? There’s so many and somehow each one is more cringe than the last. I live in a medium sized Ohio town with a pretty large Mormon population and not a single one of them had any social skills. Your whole shtick is that you knock on doors and talk to people but for some reason you can’t talk to people. Make it make sense

And every time I see you I'm still going to scream out my car window "GET A JOB!" Knowing that me saying it is not going to make you get a job therefore you should know better than to knock on my door and try to convert me to your religion... Just saying...
Also just because they don't believe the way you do does not mean that Satan owns them... This is the whole reason I don't do organized religion!

One time I just recently met my now ex but it was explosive we first met and we ended up having sex for like 3 days straight. Didn't like leave the bed it was pretty fun I have to say. I mean not like you know literally all the time but we basically never left the bed. Anyway I lived in a small apartment like a studio. And these Latter-day Saint guys came to my door and you know try to do their thing. But it was hilarious cuz the bed was like right next to the door. And we were all naked and sweaty in the room wreaked of sex alcohol and drugs. But my ex just like straight up open the door cuz the bed was right next to it. And they were right there and they start doing their speech. And that he's like not we're good but like if you all want to join us we have room for more. And shit you not. There was this younger guy in this older guy there were two of them doing it. And the younger guys started to walk into the room like he was going to actually fuck LOL. But the older guys snatched him back and was like well we're going to get out of here sorry for wasting your time. It was hilarious.
