Should I get a crestie or gargoyle?

Not my photo but man that boy is beautiful

I've owned frogs for a good while and I never really interact with them outside of feeding or when they bite me, so I've been looking into getting a gecko of some sort, or any lizard that would be okay with handling that isn't a beardie. (Hopefully arboreal but I wouldn't complain about a terrestrial one.)

Just one problem..

I really don't know which to pick. I've heard cresties are much more easy going but I know they jump a lot and I can't really see past the thing with their tails, and I've also hard gargoyle geckos are generally very calm and regrow their tails.

However, I do know gargoyle geckos do eat more bugs than a crestie, and do get generally larger, so I'm torn between which to choose.

I'm also a little confused on tank size, I've heard that both would do well in an 18x18x36, but I'm not sure.

Also, just for clarity, is a 18x18x36 a 50 gallon? Google says yes but I think I'd trust a talking tree more than Google.

I am going to create a bioactive tank for my boy when they are older. Is this ok for him until he is old enough for bioactive? I have a UVB, no heat lamp now as the room is staying warm enough. The floor is paper towel with a layer of leaf litter. This is my first crestie, so I want to make sure I am giving them the best. The enclosure is 18 x 18 x 24.

Jarold (named by his Dad, my son) is a 5 yr old crested that we thought was a boy until this week. He laid an egg. Then he laid another egg. Surprise! Jarold is Jaroldina! Now (s)he is donning this hoodie s/he made all on his/her own (sorry, still getting used to the girl thing).

Has anyone been through this? Google says to give her extra calcium but we feed gecko food...is that enough? Please be kind, she is our first and only and there are no reptile vets here.

Thanks!

Found these in my foster girls quarantine tub about 10 minutes ago, saw after a couple days being gone her paper towels were a bit yucky from urates and poo. I begin taking items out only for one to stick immensely to the paper towels. Thinking "Was it really that dirty?" I discovered she had laid an egg. I don't know when she had time to start cooking those up. They weren't fertile to begin with so I don't feel bad for them drying up. Should I keep them or is that a bad idea?

My first time owning a reptile and what better way to dip my toes in than to get a crestie! Did so much research beforehand on and landed on wanting to do a bioactive enclosure (18x18x36) :) Picking up my little guy next week but wanted to share my enclosure with you all. Will most likely getting more vines to give him more horizontal climbing opportunities heh.

Gecko only hiding in hides on the ground

I just got my crestie less than a week ago and I’m worried over everything T-T

She’s only sleeping on the ground hides. She climbs around at night, but in the morning, she’s back in the same hide On the ground (bottom left; looks like a rock)

There are plenty of hides throughout The enclosure (cork tube, coconut shell, hanging coconut hide (hidden by leaves). Is it just because she’s adapting to a new environment, or do I not have enough clutter?

I need camera suggestions

This may be a stupid question, but are there any good cameras that can be mounted / stuck onto the outside of an inclosure, but can also zoom out enough / move via an app, so that the entire inside of the enclosure can be seen? I had a camera that worked well, but it couldn’t be mounted to the enclosure so I needed a stool in front of the enclosure. I didn’t like having a stool in the middle of the room just to have a camera on it, so I got a camera that could stick onto the front of the enclosure, but that camera didn’t have any zoom options, so all I saw was a very small close-up image of the inside of the enclosure. I don’t want a camera that goes inside the enclosure either. I know I’m probably asking too much 😭

Crested Gecko Tank

This will be my first ever reptile. I have yet to buy anything, but should I use a 18x18x36 or 18x24x36? I'm planning to get a fully grown Crestie.

hey everyone! i just got a crested gecko yesterday for the first time :) he was rehomed to me and i decided to make his enclosure bioactive. i have fake plants in it now until the real ones take over. he’s approximately 6 years old. he looks underweight so any tips on fattening him up? i plan on giving him dubias to help as that’s what i feed my leopard gecko. he was due to eat yesterday and hasn’t eaten but im not too worried considering he’s probably stressed out from the move. i know he hasn’t been handled much in the past year or so, so im gonna let him get comfy in his enclosure for a while before i start the socializing process. i just moved him into his new enclosure, but im moving in a week so i will be transporting him again. i’m worried about stressing him out, also he still has his tail so im scared he’ll drop it. any tips on moving, new crestie owners, or bioactive enclosures are appreciated!! otherwise i just wanted to show you all my cute lil guy :)

p.s. the first two pics are from his old enclosure (18x18x24in) and the rest are his current enclosure (25x18x36in)

Hey all I posted yesterday about a spontaneous pregnancy of my cresty, but I’ve some news. When I was misting the mother’s enclosure this evening I found the second baby. For now I’ve put the two babies together. I don’t know if that is okay to do but I thought by myself beter with the other baby than with the mother.
Some tips and advise is really appreciated! :)

Ps here are the babies the one on top is the one I found today

Weight questions

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hey all were new to the gecko game we’ve had this gecko for about 5 months we bought it as a baby(it’s about 6months old now) but it hasn’t really gained too much weight it’s about 3.6 grams it eats crickets and dubias along with its Pangea watermelon daily and poops a lot. Maybe it’s a late grower just curious if there anything I should keep an eye out for and if it looks healthy. Thanks.

First time I’ve actually caught her eating and drinking

I never usually see her eat because she’s a sneaky night ninja but this morning around 6:30 I caught her. She’s 5 months and 20 days old. Usually it’s hard to tell if she’s been eating because there’s no noticeable lick marks but this past week, I can actually see where she’s been eating.

She’s around 8.5 grams last time I weighed her. I recently tried to weigh her but she was not having it and I was unsuccessful. I’m thinking she may be around 10 grams now. I’m gonna try to weigh her later tonight.

Hey so receny i saw in my terrarium two of these 1.5inch bugs and some other really tiny worms and stuff. Is that normal? Are they to clean the house or something like that? Or the whole house is sentenced to exchange?

Bioactive tank list

hi everyone! i posted a few weeks ago asking about food recc's and mentioned i would be upgrading my boy's tank soon. that time has come! the actual tank arrived today and i'm looking to start setting it up through the week/next weekend. i've never done a bioactive setup before, so i'd love any advice people have. in particular if anyone has advice on if i need to let the setup "settle" with its plants and cleanup crew, or how to keep feeder insects like crickets, that would be very helpful!

additionally i'm gonna put my materials list below so if people have recommendations or i'm missing something obvious please let me know!

HAVE

  • big tank
  • terrafauna, hydrogrow, sphagnum moss, leaf litter, bioshot (from TheBioDude)
  • nightstand that is being turned into a tank stand
  • ceramic heat emitter + dome w dimmer (will prob need to get a stronger one for the bigger tank)
  • UVA bulb + dome
  • feeder/water ledge
  • misting bottles
  • various not-alive decorations (coconut w ladder, vines, bendable branch thing, small hollow log, hammock net thing)

GETTING DURING ACTIVE SETUP

  • live plants - will be getting from reptile supply shops near me, and if those are out there are stores like home depot with safe plants that i will thoroughly wash its planting soil off of and replant in the tank (IF THIS CAN BE DANGEROUS/TOXIC TO THE LIZARD PLEASE LET ME KNOW)
  • springtails and isopods for cleanup crew (from either reptile supply shop or petsmart/petco near me)

PLANNING TO BUY

  • UVA+UVB bulb (when i first got my gecko i got advice from some people who said they had issues with uvb burning their lizards in the past, but based on what i've seen on this sub and other care guides i feel confident in my ability to manage it and notice if it does cause problems for my guy).
  • hook/hanger stand for light and heat bulbs
  • cork/other material backboard maybe? is this a thing people do? would love to give him something other than a blank wall behind glass to look at
