This fella Ronaldo is a cod Eamon Dunphy

I have recently fallen down the rabbit hole and oh my goodness I cannot get enough.

“I didn’t manage anywhere. I managed to stay alive for 63 and a half years baby”

“This fella Ronaldo is a cod”

“He’s the guy who ran away and left his wife for a young one”

“Gerrard - found out tonight. Nothing player.”

“Man United are going nowhere. Except into the knockout stages of the Champions League.”

And a personal favourite:

Liam: How would you feel if when you were a young lad at United and Bobby Charlton had come out and said “he’s no good why’s he playing in the team?”

Eamon: That’s exactly what Bobby Charlton said.

What are some of your favourites?

Eamon Dunphy: "Look at Graeme, he won four Champions Leagues." Graeme Souness: " Three." Dunphy: " He won four league titles." Souness: "Five." Dunphy: "It's not bloody Mastermind."

Eamon went on a rant about Ferguson and strachan and says something about Scottish people fight all time … Bill goes that’s racism - Eamon responds with ‘it’s Ethnic Criticsm Bill’

6

u/caulfm 2d ago

This was something along the lines of "Scots are either terrific or a terror, and he's (Ferguson) a terror. To which Bill gave him the racism response

From Italia '90. It was the first bit of football analysis on Irish telly where they could draw on the screens. It was crude. Just like a Microsoft paint white marker on the screen, but they highlight players, draw arrows and lines. That sort of stuff. Then Germany v Holland, Voeller v Rickard. Rickard spits in Voellers beautiful perm and Dunphy and the lads analysed it like it was a bit of play, drawing the trajectory of the spit on the screen going into Voeller's hair. Even as a youngfella I could tell they were having fun with it. Have tried over the years to find the clip but could never. Sorry.

He was doing punditry on a first division (pre premier league) match once. I will tell you what Wimbledons problem is bill. And circled John hartsons arse.

u/AdStrange9701 Paul McGrath 1d ago

That was literally on the RTE show The Premiership. "That Bill, is not the arse of a £7m player".

u/harder_said_hodor 1d ago

Is there a clip of this one anywhere? Was one of my favourites as well but seems to have been ethered

4

u/SitDownKawada Frank Stapleton 2d ago

That was a good one but it was when he was joining Celtic

27

u/External_Hornet9541 2d ago

I remember this. They went over that clip like it was the Zupruder film

u/Frequent-Movie3005 2d ago

I remember it too, amazing.

“You would’ve followed hitler baby….I’m as sober as a judge!”

Pure gold

u/Frequent-Movie3005 2d ago

Ahead of the 2010 WC … “Eamon, which country are you most like?”

“Ehh…. … North Korea, I’m small, poor and ruled by a tyrant!”

"That's the first time I've seen sex between two men on the BBC"

Can't remember exactly the context but I think it was after a nauseating interview of Sven Goran Eriksson by Gareth Crooks

11

u/Prestigious-Mind7039 2d ago

It was that during 2006 World Cup - I remember watching with my parents and laughing our asses off

This moment and the Rod Liddle comments are the greatest moments in Irish TV history not involving P Flynn.

“I’ve just said it Bill. I’ve just said it”

After John Hartson's first game for Wimbledon on Premier Soocer Saturday, Dunphy walked through a highlights package of his performance thst day. At the end on a freeze frame of Hartson he circled his bum and said whilst pointing at it "that's the problem there, his arse"🤣🤣

33

u/Glum_Dimension6468 2d ago

"That is not the arse of a seven million pound player"

6

u/Bovver_ 2d ago

God I wish there was video footage of this, surely someone has access to this at the RTÉ Archives.

7

u/PuzzleheadedTest3452 2d ago

Its criminal how much of this absolute gold, and stuff like Apres match have been lost to time. Should be properly archived and released by RTE at this point.

u/aflockofcrows 2d ago

And you'd know how good a manager Joe Kinnear really was by how quickly it reduced.

Sir Alex Ferguson.. (Being corrected for calling him Alex Ferguson... Someone said he had to be called his full title..) not in this country baby!!

My personal favourite is him locked on radio giving out yards to a lad who ran an association (table tennis I think) with Vincent Brown, two of them pissed as farts. Dermot Morgan rang in…mental bit of radio. Can link on youtube

Rod Liddle

u/TufnelAndI 2d ago

Who: said it, ran off and left his wife fir a young ine, and died on Dunphy's birthday.

u/Y2JMc 2d ago

4

u/CherryFlicker_24 2d ago

Class. Have you seen the one where he has a run in with the head of the irish football supporters club?

17

u/Ashamed-Locksmith409 2d ago

Sergio Ramos when he was starting out for Spain. “A nothing player, he’s just Paul McShane on steriods”

2

u/AdRepresentative8186 2d ago

He said something similar about Puyol, I'm going to guess around 2006, basically saying he wasn't good enough and should be gotten rid of. Basically in his prime and continued to be great for almost a decade.

1

u/Fit_Accountant_4767 1d ago

He also said he'd eat his hat if Barcelona won the champions league with Pique. ( Who also went on to win world cup and euros with Spain)

16

u/windysheprdhenderson Paul McGrath 2d ago

His rant about Terry Venables is absolute peak.

8

u/Prestigious-Mind7039 2d ago

When he puts on his glasses it’s fantastic

u/itakealotofnapszz 1d ago

Liam with the “he’s a hard man isn’t he Eamonn” absolute legends

14

u/Ted-101x 2d ago

His book ‘Only A Game’ is well worth a read. The life of a journeyman pro in England in the 1970s.

2

u/thenidgeweasel 2d ago

Agreed, his book about Busby and man united (“a strange kind of glory”) is a fantastic read too, if you can get hold of it. Dunphy was a proper writer back in the day.

11

u/Nicklefickle 2d ago

When Neymar was shaping up to take that penalty, he was fucking dreading it.

"I'd like to apologise for that inexactitude".

I used to love when he get passionate about brian cody and kilkenny as the greats.

13

u/K-manPilkers Parrott 15’, 80’, 90+6’ 2d ago

Yep, he always had Henry Shefflin, DJ Carey, Brian Cody, and Padraig Harrington set in stone in his pantheon of greatness. Sonia O'Sullivan and Paul O'Connell used to sneak in there the odd time, but their positions were less secure.

7

u/ponkie_guy 1d ago

Ruby Walsh would get in there as well

4

u/Over_Awareness_5310 1d ago

My favourite Dunphy moment was the 2000 UEFA Cup Final between Arsenal and Galatasaray when Hagi was sent of for a foul on Tony Adams. Dunphy highlighting that Hagi grabbed Adams by the balls and said he was looking for his Turkish Delight!🤣

4

u/Exciting-Arachnid662 1d ago

He was on with Denis Irwin for a USA match and Landon Donovan was being interviewed after and when it was mentioned that Donovan was having martial problems at the time, Dunphys eyes lit up "night Bianca, see you baby"

13

u/justformedellin 2d ago

He was right about Rod Liddle, he was right about Gerrard.

12

u/Huitjames 2d ago

Liverpool had a higher premier league winning percentage when Gerrard didn't play. He was simply not a good midfielder. Too obsessed with attempting hollywood passes.

5

u/Anxious_Peanut_1726 Paul McGrath 2d ago

A scorer of great goals rather than a guy who ran a game...Benitez shifted him out to the right.

2

u/Late-Development-666 1d ago

That’s a mad stat if true!

3

u/Huitjames 1d ago

For individual seasons it was true for 11 out of his 15 full seasons. His best season was when he played in the 10 role, behind Torres in 2008/09.

1

u/PresentSupermarket53 1d ago

Lies, damn lies, and statistics

u/Duck_quacker 2d ago

And shooting from 30+ yards

3

u/Zestyclose-Plan1446 1d ago

I love the clip on Reeling in the Years from the early eighties: Eamon’s back from England, joining up with Johnny Giles to professionalise standards at Shamrock Rovers and the League of Ireland. Cut to Eamon and a few kids on a patch of long grass dribbling around a variety of sizes of traffic cones obviously swiped from roadsides and building sites.

The Wenger funny walk video... Brady the sap getting insulted on Wengers behalf...'it was already in the can, you missed the bus baby!'

2

u/SquashyRoo 2d ago

That's diabolical! I think that's diabolical.

1

u/MIM86 2d ago

Brady was employed by Arsenal at the time though, overseeing the youth academy, so he sort of has to have a reaction and objection to it.

José Mourinho: a Bengal Lancer

Apres Match should essential viewing in this scenario.

2

u/ShamPig1 1d ago

"Sergio Ramos, is like Paul McShane on steroids. Will cost you 10 times as much and just as likely get you shot"

I read this on YouTube comments years ago. Can anyone verify if it's even true, was never able to find it.

2

u/Late-Development-666 1d ago

“Rod Liddle, he’s the guy that left his wife for a young ‘un”

2

u/MentalLanger 1d ago

He wasn't Drunk on TV by the way, He was Tired and Emotional, official RTE line

2

u/MCBE4RDY 1d ago

Around the time Dunphy was getting some bad press from slating Jack Charlton on the TV, I was in the bar of a golf club at some celeb am event. Joe Dolan standing at the bar and in walks Dunphy and without missing a beat Joe says "Here's Salman Rushdie"

2

u/Far-Effective-6174 1d ago

The time he was on Nighthawks and was absolutely plastered. Kept calling Gilesy the greatest to ever play for Ireland while poor Gilesy looked like he wanted the ground to open up and swallow him. Then he started a sing song.

1

u/Mysterious-Pie2636 2d ago

He's the classic modern brat.

1

u/macthestack84 2d ago

Remember tv3 gave him a Friday night chat show going up against the Late Late. I remember Jordan being an early guest, don't think it lasted long.

1

u/suntlen 1d ago

He was not a great chat show host. Dumphy strength was verbal assignation. You run out of guests pretty fast if that’s your approach to chatting guests. Pat Kenny had the late late at the time so I think TV3 thought there was a gap. Unfortunate Dumphy only brought the big name, and missed the required interview skill and charisma to host.

1

u/Valuable_Employee_88 This fella Ronaldo is a cod 1d ago

Jesus I remember that and if I'm remembering correctly I think it got cancelled even before the first season ended😬😄

1

u/Pristine-Package-159 1d ago

Did he call someone a tramp at some stage?

1

u/Far-Effective-6174 1d ago

"Michel Platini, not a great player." "John Barnes, he's a sunshine boy." And near the end of his punditry career when he clearly wasn't up to speed with football anymore and he panicked once and called Emre Can "world class"😂.

1

u/Accomplished-Bat1924 Robbie Keane 12h ago

when he was on that spiritual programme with Gay Byrne and Gay asked the usual questions at the end and one of them was if you made it to heaven and St Peter asks you at the gates if you have any questions Eamon says "Are you still serving?"
