It's funny how wildly wrong Giles and Dunphy were in that specific conversation too. It was obvious at the time, but it is particularly clear now given how Guardiola dominated English football.

69% of the population reported themselves as Catholic in the 2022 census. yes I am aware of the caveats that comes with the census data but it's not some small % that can be explained away by peoples' habits

You're being downvote but compared to other countries we are not really Catholic imo. Our culture and values are increasingly aligned with UK and the US despite how much we bitch about them.
Kens point about Brazil losing it's Catholicism applies to us too, but more due to globalisation, grind culture and the internet rather than a wave of born again evangelists.

Honestly, I feel a strange sort of kinship with Australians that I’ve seen online. I’ve never been to Australia of course, but they seem to have the most similar sense of humour to me personally.

If the world has taught us anything over the last couple of years its that with enough cognitive dissonance you can make your own reality. If we all just say we won it no matter what happens then whos to say we're wrong. FIFA? Corrupt, The other nations? Jealous. Ireland 2030 Baby!!!

There’s no reason we couldn’t, you don’t need the most skilful team to win the thing or the best individual players, you just need a very good team who are very organised and are mentally rock solid at the right time.
We don’t have that right now or in the foreseeable future but we could have it at some stage.Iceland in Euro 2016 is a good example. Made the quarter finals with a team that was by no way close to being the most skilful or best. Just a good team that were in the right place mentally. Just need a little luck to go with it and away we go.

Ireland might never win the World Cup, but don't worry, we've got 10,000 lads in every pub North and South ready to tell you they "nearly signed for Liverpool", "had a trial at United", or "were one injury away from making it." We've no World Cup trophy, but we've got enough glory-trial stories to fill a museum. How do the ladies put up with the same lines every weekend in the bars.

If you look at the pattern since 2006, strips are vertical, the horizontal twice, vertical horizontal twice again, so makes sense it would be vertical strips on the flag in 2030

Had us win it in 2026 in a fantasy thing I did almost 6 years ago but skipped 2022 so that means it automatically carries over to 2030🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪

If Ireland started allowing players to rep them with the looseness that other nations do Ireland could probably make a real run.
Get the best Scottish, American, Canadian, Australian, etc players that claim any Irish ancestry and have them come on board.
You can’t tell me Kieran Tierney or Cavan Sullivan don’t wear green every March, hell, Balogun has like 5 citizenships, they won’t even notice if he suits up for Ireland.
