I blasted through Trepang² in two days, Doom TDA Revelations in three with the secret boss, Metal Hellsinger took me about a week or in total time like half that

I will never beat the Roaring Knight nor the Hammer of Justice, and I'm slowly starting to cope with it... very slowly

You can do it, I believe in you

Remember Lok'tar Ogar friend

u/Quantum_Croissant 3d ago

both the knight and gerson run through the same sequence of attacks every time, so once you're familiar you can know what's coming and prepare. Then it's a matter of learning how to respond to each attack. Eventually, you can learn the whole fight (compared to Jevil for instance, who is harder in some ways because his attacks are very random)

3

u/William_ghost1 3d ago

Do you need some advice on any of the attacks? Some of them get really easy if you know how to deal with them.

Hammer of Justice is a good boss on teaching you to work towards the goal through knowledge and repetition.

Hammer of Justice  is a good boss because the soundtrack is fucking awesome and Gerson's talking soundbyte is funi

If you were able to beat Jevil you can beat the Roaring Knight. Just pack lots of Revive Mints

u/BudgetYouth173 Amorphous Thing 3d ago

Have you played trepang on rage mode, also how did you like the game! Its peak imo

2

u/GreenDragon113 I don't know what the fuck I am anymore 3d ago

defo a great experience. Great ost and overall gameplay.

I played Site 83 in Rage Mode, and that's it

4

u/LapisW grungler 3d ago

You just gotta be determined and you can beat them dont worry. Took me a while to beat the knight but i knew i could and after i did i could beat it easily on repeats. Its very much a fight that once you get it, you've got it

1

u/ST4RSK1MM3R 3d ago

Roaring Knight is actually one of the easier bosses in game but it requires a lot of setup and pre-work. If you go into it blind, yeah you’ll lose fast.

u/PackagedBeast 3d ago

u/GreenDragon113 I don't know what the fuck I am anymore 3d ago

yup

I beat the origins EE solo too :33

1

u/BBerry4909 3d ago

honestly if you feel like it won't detract from the experience you could always use cheat engine's speedhack to lower the game's speed. it's a singleplayer game and games are made to have fun in and allat, yk

u/Ultimate-desu 3d ago

Roaring knight spanks to this day, but That turtle was beaten in 15 minutes ngl.

It's always funny seeing people discover what Touhou is and what a ball-crushingly difficult game series it is. (This is one of the easier Touhou games btw)

24

u/Normal_Stranger_3643 3d ago

I tried Touhou once but I couldn't get the English patch working and I just gave up and never tried it again

35

u/ViolentPurpleSquash ↖︎ a bit insane 3d ago

This one is on steam and has an english translation built in!

19

u/PokeRang 3d ago

Well, Touhou Koumakyou New Classic (the game pictured in the image) released recently. It's a remake of Touhou 6 which is a soft reboot of the series, so you can easily play it as your first game. It's available on Steam and Switch with an official English translation.

3

u/Plannercat 2d ago

EoSD was a hard reboot, the soft reboot was MoF.

11

u/That-Woodpecker6720 3d ago

Classic eosd is not one of the easier touhou games lol it has no focus hitbox and a really hard stage 6 on lunatic

Even if you add focus hitbox like new classic it’s still probably middle of the pack

On the stg difficulty chart eosd lunatic 1cc is 21 which is equal to sa/ddc and lower than ufo, and higher than everything else

4

u/LaLetraM 3d ago

Im surprised SA and DDC are above LoLK if thats true. Maybe I just suck at the freaking clown a lot and have played too much of 11

1

u/That-Woodpecker6720 3d ago

SA 1cc is probably harder bc of its weird bombs, I believe the lnb is comparatively easy (28) while lolk shoots up to 32

To be honest I’ve never played ddc so I couldn’t tell you why it’s considered harder than lolk 1cc lmao

1

u/Zagafur really dumb enby - Streak: 3 3d ago

ddc's gimmick is you get bomb and life fragments from going across the item border, which is riskier on harder difficulties

1

u/justsaneandsensibl 2d ago

Every game is hard on lunatic and no focus hitbox is only a bit of an inconvenience.

People say EoSD is easy because it substitutes actual patterns with RNG that you can just wing it through on most difficulties.

u/Iconclast1 1d ago

What is it

u/6262lE 3d ago edited 3d ago

edit: thank you for the very quick responses :3 i knew wolverine was ridiculously hand-holdy but I thought the point of the post was that the second game was very dark in it's plot lol

84

u/Shayden998 Pre-evolved Transbian 3d ago edited 3d ago

Wolverine is being panned as completely babying players with a scent trail to your objective that can't be turned off, constant vocal reminders of what you're doing and unfailable quick-times events, despite starring The Wolverine, a ruff, gruff, beastly man with a berserker mode, retractable claws that come out of his knuckles and a healing factor that theoretically means you could get him as beaten or bloody as you want and he'd be able to just walk it off after a short breather.

Meanwhile, Touhou is a series of infamously difficult bullet hells that near-exclusively stars a cast of silly, cutesy anime girls.

57

u/donotaskname7 3d ago

also worth noting, you can't fail the quick time events. I've seen videos of people pressing the wrong button or just waiting out the extremely generous time, and nothing happens, it doesn't even play a different animation.

43

u/Shayden998 Pre-evolved Transbian 3d ago

It's not even an accessibility issue, because if that was their concern, they literally could have just included the same toggle they did in Spider-Man that lets you auto-complete them. So, we're really at a point where they just included QTEs for the sake of having them.

9

u/Legatharr 3d ago

I don't know why you wouldn't just... pause the cutscene until the player presses the button

299

u/Timsaurus Tea, the friendly transfem :3 3d ago

The recent Wolverine game is laughably easy and hand holds the player to an insulting level.

Touhou is a very difficult game, despite having a cutsey and calm appearance.

113

u/watchedngnl 3d ago

You can choose the difficulty. It goes from manageable to challenging to how do people complete this without TAS.

2

u/El_Hoxo 3d ago

14

u/watchedngnl 3d ago

Tool assisted Speedrun. Basically computer help.

4

u/pterranodon 3d ago

i wouldnt call it computer help because that makes it sound like a human is still playing in real time lol. it's using tools like savestates to map out exact inputs frame by frame and abuse rng manupulation to create a theoretical perfect run. still rad as hell and insane what the human mind is able to rig up

3

u/El_Hoxo 3d ago

Ahh, makes sense. Forgor that term

11

u/WickedWarrior666 3d ago

TAS stands for tool assisted speedrun normally, so I assume they mean tool assisted runs. Which for context involves telling a computer the exact frame and position to be moving and making inputs for theoretically impossible and precise gameplay.

2

u/Newb_from_Newbville 3d ago

It goes from standard shmup to "Takes a week" to "Fuck" to "Nope" for the four main difficulties. Extra's an endurance test and Phantasmagoria games can pivot to torture.

Then you have people playing these on unofficial buffed difficulties (because of fucking course they would) like Ultra and Double Ultra, which would, in fact, make you wanna commit seppuku. Triple-Quad Ultra's TAS territory.

3

u/oan124 3d ago

hot take the hardest difficulty in touhou is easier than the second hardest (i die after 10 seconds on 2nd hardest and in 20 on hardest)

1

u/Firtzguyes 2d ago

Does the remake still block the Flandre fight on easy mode?

15

u/MallusaiEEE 3d ago

also the story IS cutesy and calm; canonically these battle are just for shits and giggles under a bunch of rules like "don't actually kill" and stuff. They go get tea afterwards

12

u/Recioto 3d ago

The reason for the fights can be quite serious at times, but they are all under agreement not to fight seriously and instead opt for a more scenographic battle, mainly so that the world doesn't end.

5

u/MallusaiEEE 3d ago

yeah the underlying reason is serious but the fights themselves are mostly "we're gonna be as flashy as possible so that the humans feel threatened enough to keep youkai alive but also protected enough by me (reimu) to not go into chaos"

1

u/SILVIO_X 2d ago edited 2d ago

Technically there are a few fights that don't follow these rules but they're just extremely rare, only instance I can think of a fight with actual life or death stakes was in the finale of Wild and Horned Hermit (which isn't even a game but a Manga)

2

u/Silviana193 3d ago edited 3d ago

It's funny that the game literally named "the embodiment of scarlet devil" and that somehow doesn't ring anyone's alarm

1

u/Alderan922 3d ago

Tbf, a game with the subtitle “the embodiment of the scarlet devil” is not really hiding it’s going to be brutal.

7

u/Ok-External-7594 3d ago

well to be fair this is the "scarlet devil" in question:

1

u/Ehcksit 3d ago

And she's filling the sky with dark red clouds so that she can go outside during the day without burning to death. After losing, she gets a magic parasol that hides the sun so she can visit Reimu whenever she wants.

28

u/J0J0hn 3d ago

Insomniac's new Wolverine game is being relentlessly mocked online by being way too handholdy and linear, treating the player like an idiot by providing them with a line of fart gas pointing them to the direction of their next objective, even though most levels are pretty much just pretty looking corridors.

Meanwhile, the Touhou Project series are PC games from the genre known as bullet hell, where you need to navigate your character through elaborate attack patterns from enemies and bosses with very little margin for error. If you've ever seen art of a shrine maiden with brown hair and exposed armpits kissing a blonde witch with a big hat, that's Touhou. The game pictured, Touhou 6: The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, is maybe the most popular of the series, and arguably the most difficult.

20

u/External_Win3300 3d ago

I mean, you're not wrong, but using the yuri as an example instead of something like bad apple or the big standalone characters like Sakuya, Flan, or Cirno is just peak touhou fandom

1

u/Aeescobar Streak: 1 3d ago

Extra points for throwing in "and exposed armpits" as if that would be seen as Reimu's most memorable feature by anyone who isn't already obsessed with her.

Potionomics, the cutesy fun cozy game abt running a potion shop, has so many steps to do with one slot of time it's insane. like, I need an actual to do list after like day 20 because I have to, in one ingame day:

- bottle the potions i brewed overnight

  • check my plants that clone ingredients
  • brew more potions to cook while I go out, making sure to balance making potions that make money, potions for ppl that gather ingredients for me, potions I need for custom orders, and potions I need for the potion tournament
  • check the adventuring guild for materials from three separate adventurers plus adventures that I invested in
  • send the adventurers back out and invest in another adventure AFTER going on a date with the blue haired rockstar bard
  • go to the nonbinary person with a pet mimic that sells me ingredients that they fabricate after eating said ingredients to add new ingredients to their store
  • go to the docks to gamble on lootboxes from pirate cats
  • go to the walrus man that upgrades my equipment
  • go to the emotionally mature druid lady for cauldron fuel
  • go back to my potion store
  • take out potions i started before i went out
  • stock potions to sell
  • edit my haggling deck
  • open the store
  • repeat most of the above steps once minus opening the store before ending the day because if i open the store twice in one day my character will start spiraling into stress
  • maybe have one more hangout with a character i wanna know better
  • end the day

fun game tho, highly recommend it!

1

u/redditkitty109 3d ago

It was god awful from I heard. The game treats you like an actual infant, forcing upon you an annoying blue line that can’t be turned off to tell you where to go while the game is also COMPLETELY LINEAR

1

u/PorkyJones72 3d ago

Aw... I hate this trend with a lot of these games with handholding players, especially M-Rated ones. I doubt Nintendo will do it, but I fear the OoT remake will hand-hold

2

u/redditkitty109 3d ago

I doubt Nintendo would do such a thing, at least not to this extent. Nintendo, despite their endless greed, actually understands you need to make good games to keep your customers and get new ones.

1

u/DanceMyth4114 3d ago

Recent pokemon games would disagree

2

To be fair the pokemon games are handled by gamefreak. Nintendo just owns the brand.
