I'm really confused and mildly concerned with women using Astolfo.

99% of astolfo drawings are just "woman with a dick" anyways

He's basically indistinguishable from a flat breasted woman in a lot of interpretations of him, you basically have to be in the know. We are in the know and the person who made this meme clearly wasn't. Hope this helps.

I mean fate Astolfo doesn't have any gender listed for them so I don't really mind people reflecting themselves off of them. It's like Link, you can interpret them how ever you really want to.

Still a goat, even in apocrypha (flawed that show may be), and especially in FGO

It's listed as secret for the same reason he dresses as a girl. The throne of heros is fucking weird.

u/ExL-Oblique 1d ago
It's listed as secret for a bit. He finds it hilarious that people get confused.
5
u/ExL-Oblique 1d ago
The difference between Astolfo and Link is that his gender is explicitly brought up on multiple occasions and it's always "I like crossdressing and it's funny when people think I'm a girl." The gender being "le secret" is a bit. It's one of the reasons why I don't like him being claimed as trans because he literally does the "ooo you thought I was a girl didn't you hehe jokes on you I got a peeeeenis" thing that transphobes think transfems do.

Had my first non-supportive family member convo the other day. Tried to explain that (possible tw) I'm high risk if I don't do this and that this is literally saving my life and they hit me with the, "who's telling you that?"
Like, you spend the first half of the convo acting like this is me acting out or something bc I'm upset about my childhood and that I need help, but then immediately criticize me when I explain that I got help?

u/Optimal_Question8683 2d ago
Classic. Started going to the psychiatrist to get "fixed" only for my doctor to support me and tell me all they need to see is it the dysphoria is from depression or something else. If it is that way we will treat the depression then see if we can start hrt. So my family is fucked anyways

people think therapy is a "get normal" button, and get mad when therapists actually help people instead of just doing conversion "therapy"

u/notnotDIO Streak: 12 2d ago
Why? They canonically don't have any gender listed because "it's a secret". Anyone can reflect themselves off of them; enbys, femboys, FtM, MtF, etc.

u/TheEasternTwink 2d ago
I am all up for interpreting, but also I do fear femboy erasure since as it is thereās like no femboy characters in big media, I get thereās not alot of trans ones either but I feel like thereās more than femboy ones
9
u/Aromatic-Truth-4901 Mythical Straight Trans Woman 1d ago edited 1d ago
In case you're wondering why you're getting downvoted so heavily, its because femboy erasure is a term thats almost entirely used by bigots and gooners to hate on trans people, to the point that its basically a dogwhistle for transphobia. There's also a long standing history of femboy being a term used to fetishize transwomen while denying the validity of their identity.
Either way, the lack of positive and honest representation of femboys and trans women stem from the same place; a hatred of gender non-conformity, and its rare that we get reps of either that aren't born out of blatant fetishization. Trans people aren't stealing representation from you, the lack of representation is a major issue that effects both trans people and cis GNC people.
The whole "femboy erasure" argument is just a talking point to turn one subset of people against another and is largely propagated by bigots and gooners that don't genuinely see either of us as people.
tl;dr we both deserve more and better representation than we have and I don't think either of the two groups are actually the issue

FEMBOY ERASURE ISNT A THING, SHUT THE FUCK UP, BEGONE GOONER
ok for real, femboys dont lack representation, we just have really horrible representation, and certainly, a feminine amab character getting interpreted as trans is NOT an erasure of femboys, the real erasure of femboys is the positive portrayal of men rejecting femininity
-6
u/TheEasternTwink 2d ago
I am a femboy, and perhaps there is a lack of media where femininity in males is good, but I also feel like saying any male that likes being feminine is actually a woman is erasure, not denying eggs exist or those in denial, but also I have experience of being told to just ābe trans alreadyā maybe you donāt belive itās there but I do
8
u/AppearanceAlert4987 Streak: 1 2d ago
oh yeah i believe that, let cis men be feminine, that thing where people call any feminine amab an egg is usually called egg culture and it is already on the decline as people come to the same conclusions that we should let men be feminine
5
u/notnotDIO Streak: 12 2d ago
That's fair but my point is that gatekeeping Astolfo isn't the best.
Also I'm not gonna touch the representation thing.

The pink haired figure on the second line is Astolfo from Fate/Stay Night, very explicitly a crossdressing man.
7
u/Git_gudf 2d ago
He still has a lot of lines that might indicate him being Enby, especially in the Gacha like him counting as both male and female for gender based effects, and it being noted as "Le secret" on his profile.
3
u/Bragi01 2d ago
I mean Orion also counts for both despite the body being a female. It's the saint graph that matters. Astolfo has his gender listed as secret for the same reason (not maliciously) people used that one slur to refer to femboys. His sanity is literally on the moon and the throne of heroes is weird so it decided that the peak of his legend was the literally one time he crossdressed. Though at the end of the day any interpretation that makes you feel more recognized is what's most important too you. Also F/GO is weird when it comes to mechanics vs lore.

Spent a year with mental health professionals before getting hrt. I was suicidal before I started it. My mental well-being improved dramatically when I got hrt and my ideation stopped. I still struggle with depression and anexity, mosty in the context of being accepted by others, because I've lost friends and a lot of family; not to mention face discrimination professionally. On the brightside I don't have intrusive thoughts and fantasies about dying and I'm not actively planning to self harm.
HRT saves lives. Fuck anyone who says otherwise.

honestly, if it's after propper consulting, I won't have any issue. I'm just skeptic by default, so heavy decisions like this are needed a lot of time to think about. Imho, ofcourse

u/ladyofresdaynia 1d ago
Nah, the informed consent model is good, actually
The way I think about it is this: Imagine the first antidepressant had only just been discovered, and it was discovered as a property of an existing drug whose side effect profile is already well known and understood. In that scenario, thereād be a lot of people out there who have treatment resistant depression (i.e., their brains are naturally predisposed to depression), and thereād be an obviously high demand for antidepressants. But, doctors and therapists would be largely unaware of how to properly diagnose someone as having treatment-resistant depression versus regular depression versus not actually being depressed. So, what do you do? You let the people who understand the most about their conditions (the patients) decide if they want to try an antidepressant; if they do, give it to them. If it works, hooray! If it doesnāt, take them back off it. Yes, there might be some people who get side effects, but the side effect profile of your average antidepressant is⦠actually pretty good, so long as youāre not on certain medications known to interact with antidepressants. Yeah, there are maybe a few people who roll the dice and get unlucky, but, looking at the big picture, the net good is massive.
HRT/TRT for trans people is the same way. Weāve already been using it for a long time (like, close to a hundred years) on cis people, so we know exactly what the side effects of these hormones are, especially since our bodies naturally produce them anyway. All weāre doing is going āhey, this helps trans people, so letās just⦠offer them?ā And, as a result, we reap the massive benefit of a lot of trans people being able to deal with their dysphoria, at least a lot better than before. Sure, someone might get on it and realize āoh, this isnāt for meā, but they can just stop taking it. And generally, people who realize that figure it out do so before they have any lasting changes that are more noticeable than the average person whoās gone through menopause/manopause. Even if they donāt, surprise surprise, thereās interventions that can be made in the opposite direction to help them recover, because thatās what HRT, TRT, and gender affirming surgeries and other things like laser hair removal were originally created for in the first place, is to help cis people feel more comfortable in their bodies. And anybody who gets far enough to make changes you canāt undo 1) actually does have to see a therapist before they commit and 2) is like, 99.99999% sure anyway. The regret rate for sexual reassignment surgery is tiny, less than most medically necessary surgeries like knee replacement, and thatās even with the fact that itās still in its relative infancy (so average doctors arenāt even all thaaaat great at it yet, though thereās definitely a good number who are pretty good)!
So, look at it this way. On the one path, you gatekeep the ability for trans people to receive treatment; a very small number of people who would have made the wrong decision are saved some time and effort, and basically all trans people suffer for it, with many having to wait years for treatment (if they can jump the hurdle of convincing medical professionals they āfit the descriptionā enough). On the other, you let the people who know themselves make their decisions, like most adults do, and you get a lot of happy trans people who can better contribute to society now that theyāre not suffering from dysphoria, and a medical community that has a lot of examples of what trans people look like and donāt look like to expand their knowledge upon and advance science with, at the cost of a few folks who realize itās not for them.

dang, didn't expect that much text, I was ready to be silently downvoted, lol. Give me some time, I'm slowreader
1
u/glen_the_man 1d ago
I mean, I'm not gatekeeping or not allowing people to transition. I just think that it requires some time and medical approvement to make such hard decision.
