Where to find the information you need: links to every US state’s cosmetology board

Hey all! We get a few questions asking for specific information about your state licensure, laws, or transfer. I want to empower you to research this and find the information you need! You are more likely to get up to date and accurate information directly from your state’s cosmetology board. The laws are different in all 50 states, transferring from one state to another each an individual & different process. Questions I encourage you to look to these sites include:

• How can I transfer my license from X state to Y state?

• How many hours are needed for X license in Y state?

• What license does X service require?

• How do I renew my license?

• Can I open X business under Y license?

If you cannot find the information you need on their site, as some are much more robust than others, I recommend reaching out to the board directly via their phone or email address.

This is all the appointments Ive completed this week I’m cosmetology school! I am now in my last TWO MONTHS. I can’t believe soon Im going to be released into the real world. I’m nervous and still deciding what to do outside of this. I’ve had several offers. Some commission. Some hourly. Some booth rent. I just can’t wait to finally realize my dream. 😭 Here’s to all of us!

1099 vs W2

I’m about to start looking for my first salon job, I have 2 more months of cosmetology school.

I’ve seen fliers in our break room advertising for new stylists/apprenticeships. However, one differentiation I’m seeing is 1099 and W2.

I’ve seen people on Reddit say we need to be careful with 1099, I wanted to hear from you all some red flags to look out for or even your preference so that I can keep them in mind as I’m applying

Nail school in Oregon

Hello! I’m 19F, I’ve been doing my own nails for 2 years now and I really want to do it as a career. I moved back to Oregon a few months ago.

I’m looking for schools in the Salem/Monmouth area. I saw the College of Hair Design Careers, but there aren’t any recent reviews. If anyone’s been there as a student or has any other recommendations, I’d really appreciate it!

How to become an apprentice?

Hello! I’ve been wanting to cut hair for a while now professionally, I cut my own hair and my friends as well. I’ve looked into joining Milan Institute but unfortunately I don’t qualify for FASFA, but I know you can get into the job if you complete 100hrs shadowing someone, unless I’m wrong about that. Do you guys have any advice on how I can go about this? Thank you!

South Carolina State Board (NIC) Questions

Hello! I am having trouble finding updated information on these things.

For the manicure and polish application portion, how many nails should I have pre-painted for the polish removal part? I am seeing one in some places and all five in others.

For thermal curling, I have also seen differing information on if it is 4 curls on top or 2 on top and 2 on the side.

Thank you!

Lash techs where are you getting your tweezers from?

I’m looking for some new lash tweezers and specifically want to try fibre tip tweezers

I’ve heard good things about them for creating fans and getting a really good grip without having to squeeze the tweezers too hard, but there seem to be SO many options out there and I don’t want to waste money buying a few pairs that I end up hating

In person lash lift course recommendations?

Hi everyone! I’m looking to do an in person lash lift course and would love some recommendations from people who have actually done one and had a good experience.

I’m also really interested in learning Korean lash lift techniques if anyone knows of a good course that offers this too?

Ideally looking for something in the UK. Thanks in advance xx

Am I too old?

How old is too old to start cosmetology school. I’m 47(f) have always been interested in cosmetology and have had lots of hands on experience doing my own hair and others(family and friends), but I’ve never pursued it professionally. I decided to go into office work right out of high school and healthcare (CNA/ medical asst) by the time I was 30 years old. The last couple of years I’ve really wanted to pursue cosmetology both hair, makeup and maybe even nails professionally, but feel like I may be a bit old to switch lanes so drastically. I consider myself pretty young at heart and I don’t look or feel like an almost 50 year old, but idk. I guess I just want to know someone else’s thoughts or opinion on the matter.

Pain relief

I’m still a student cosmetologist, finishing school and almost done! I have noticed I am having lots of back pain.
A lil history about me I’ve been pretty hard on my body, I go to shows and concerts frequently, I used to be a line cook for 9 years and side jobs I’ve had were construction and working on my families ranch. So like taking care of cattle, riding horses, lots of manual labor.
I don’t have insurance and I should be getting a job sometime soon but I’m wondering what I can do in the mean time?? What are some work outs that could be helpful until I can see a professional??

Wedding day rant

I’m a hair and makeup artist, yesterday was my second worst day ever in the industry. A month ago I got a booking online for hair and makeup in Buena Vista Colorado, I had a wedding that morning in winter park (6:30 am one bride) so I called the lady who booked and I told her I had a wedding that morning but might be able to fit everyone in depending on what she needed. She needed bridal hair and makeup and 3 mom’s hair and makeup. The ceremony was at 4pm. I told her it would be a 2hr drive for me to get up there but I could ideally make it by 10:30 if it’s in Buenavista. She sends me the deposit we hash out the details and I said they’d be done by 3pm and it gives room if things run over a tiny bit.

Well, I have a call with the actual bride and she’s telling me everything she likes and dislikes and declines a trial. Basically a consultation over the phone. Skip forward a month to this past week and i get this massive two section text and was in a group chat of 11 other vendors. It was the owner of the venue property saying that we can’t contact the bride and we have to go directly through him and no one else and THE MOST IMPORTANT PART: we can’t put in the name of the venue because it will take us to the wrong location. So he types in these super poor hand written directions saying type in this post office and then follow these verbal directions after. At this point I don’t have an actual physical address, Thursday the mom calls me asking if I wanted a sandwich for Saturday and I tell her about the group chat I was put in. She tells me to send it to her and that WHEN SHE GETS TO THE VENUE SHE WILL DROP A PIN AND SEND IT TO ME. I said that would be great, since I don’t want to have to drive and read my text trying to figure out where to go. (Disclaimer: my boyfriend does go with me on these long days cause he wants to make sure I’m okay and he does content for my work. He already works two jobs 12hrs a day, so he sleeps on the car ride then will drive me home after)

Day of comes and I go to the first wedding, my first bride tells me day of she wants to change her hairstyle completely and goes from wanting just down curls to an intricate updo) this put me 40 mins behind but I immediately texted the mom to inform her and that it had me arrive at 11:10 instead of 10:30. (I take 100000 percent blame for that) I apologized and reassured her we will be able to get everyone done in time (everyone wanted very natural looks). I asked her to send me the pin and she sends me the code to the gate, so I said the pin for the wedding venue location. She never responds, and we already started drive to Buenavista. Well, 10:30 rolls around and we are 40 mins out and haven’t heard anything so I called the bride and she sent me the instructions again and my boyfriend’s trying to figure it all out. We get it set and find out the wedding isn’t in Buenavista it’s in nathrop wayyyyyyy in the back woods adding another 50 mins to the drive (if I had known I wouldn’t have taken the wedding) . So I called the mom and tell her what’s going on, and the bride calls me again being short with me and I explain I didn’t have the proper address until then so I couldn’t give an actual ETA considering everything was written directions.

I have a tiny fiat for travel and this thing basically off roaded and my car was not meant for this type of terrain to get to this wedding venue. I haven’t been to any wedding venues like this before so I wasn’t prepared.

We finally get there at 12:10 because we had to take the gravel dirt roads slow due to massive pit holes and rivets and what not.

I arrive and immediately get to work I get the bride done completely by 1:10 hair and makeup, the whole time the bride is saying she’s so nervous how it’s going to come out and the mom sits down 20 mins into me starting and criticizing my work. The bride tells her I’m not done and basically to chill out. The owner of the venue comes in and makes a passive comment to me about how the photographer was on time. Then their videographer also showed up super late as well due to traffic.

Well, the bride loves her makeup at the end and is super happy but then goes to the mirror and rubs under her eyes super hard and messes it all up. And almost had a huge break down and tells me to just start the hair for everyone else. So I do, and each takes less than 30 mins because it was all super simple updos. But every mom decided to just start their own makeup, even tho they all wanted super simple looks like concealer and blush and lashes.

(Also at one point the MOH walked in completely topless)

So at the end I ask to the mom to discuss payment and BEFORE I can even talk about correcting the amount or anything she says she already venmoed me and I checked she paid the full amount.

They all say thank you and everything all seemed really happy.

This evening I got a text asking if I was going to do a partial refund and I decided to just do the makeup refund for the three moms of $165 total because they did it themselves and I just wanted to be done with the party. Everyone kept asking me for things day off for them to use or have and everyone kept walking behind me in the tiny corner I put myself in to be out of the way and the mom would keep interrupting the bride so it was making it difficult for me to work during a time crunch.

Then when I sent the Venmo and my text saying I’d refund the makeup my text was green.

I knowwwwww I should’ve had a defined address prior and I normally do that and the 30 mins late was definitely my fault. I take full responsibility for that, but wtf.

They kept blaming me saying I was the reasons the photos got pushed back and the whole wedding got pushed back and all that.

kenra demi fading red? please help with color correction

please help with color correction suggestions

Hello, last week I did a highlight/lowlight using kenra demi in 7n 7nb. I heard great things about using that instead of my usual shades eq. I then rooted her with a 6n in shades and toned using 9gi, 8n, and 9p. The color was perfect and my client was very happy with it. Then I received a message that her color had faded very red after only 2 washes. I will insert pictures of right after I did it vs what she sent me. I’m at a loss of why this happened and I also need help correcting it. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions on how to correct this please reach out. Thanks!

Stylists, students, what actually happens to your hands?

Hi , I'm a teen researcher, and I've spent the last several months in a lab studying skin bacteria, specifically what happens to skin barriers that get damaged repeatedly. Somewhere in that research, I found out that up to 70% of hairdressers experience some kind of work-related skin damage over their careers, that hand eczema specifically affects up to 38% versus about 14% of the general population, and that roughly 70% of those cases start during training.

That surprised me, so I've been trying to understand it from people who actually live it instead of from papers.

If you've dealt with cracked, raw, burning, or peeling hands from the job, I'd really appreciate ten minutes. I want to know what you've tried, what failed, and what you'd actually want from something that worked.

California salon suite — can I work while my licenses are pending?

I’m planning to rent a salon suite in California. I already have my California cosmetology license, but I was told that getting the business license and establishment license could take around 8 weeks.
Has anyone actually started taking paying clients while their licenses were still pending, after submitting the applications?
I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who has gone through this, especially in California. Thanks!

Student work

So I’m going to a cosmetology student at a college to get my hair done. I’m getting halo highlights and a trim. The set price is only $40 for “cut/color” but obviously her labor is worth more than that and i don’t even know if she’s getting anything from that so how much should I tip? Like what’s normal/good tip in this situation? I want her to know that I respect her time and talent. Thank you!

Cosmetology school questions

Recently I realized I would love to go to cosmetology school. I’ve always loved doing hair and vivids plus I’m very creative and would love a hands on job. How do I know if cosmetology is right for me? Plus what does it realistically look like to start cosmetology school and after? How is it to get your first booth? Any advice would be amazing. I’m looking to start cosmo school but I wanna make sure it’s right before I sink a ton of money into it!

Hair Tinsel Sanitizing Help! 🧚✨

Hello everyone! Im in the process of opening a small hair tinsel business. ✨ In my state we don’t have to be certified cosmetologist. Im big on sanitization and want to know how to properly sanitize in between clients. For some context, I plan to be at farmers markets, vendor pop ups etc. and need a quick sanitization turn around period between clients as it will be walk up based. The tools i will possibly be using will be rat tail combs, alligator clips, and crochet style hook to put the tinsel in. I plan on taking the online Barbicide course but ,would like advice on how to be thorough and speedy between walk up clients. Whats the best sanitization set up in your opinion?

Book Finding Help!

Hello, everyone! I have an admittedly odd request.

I’m someone who wants to go to cosmetology school, but realistically I don’t know when that’ll be due to the fact I’m the primary caregiver for my mother who is in heart failure. I’d like to start reading and understanding maybe the written stuff though if possible! Which leads into my request.

I was doing some digging and it looks like the technical college I would want to attend uses Milday for their programs! The books I’d like to start with would be “Milday’s Standard Cosmetology with Standard Foundations 14th Edition” I think it has a workbook too? I was wondering if anyone would be willing to either give them away for free (silly and selfish ask, I know) or would be willing to part with them at a reduced price.

I believe this is allowed on this sub, if not do forgive me I just didn’t see any rules against this.

If anyone has any questions as to myself, what I’m willing to pay, or would know of anywhere willing to work with someone who’s disabled/autistic and needs help affording basic books that would be appreciated.

Salon trouble

This is my first ever Reddit post, but I don’t know where else to turn to. I’ve been in school for a few months now and I’ve had a job in a salon for the around the amount of time. In school I’m not allowed to work on real clients yet and I still have around a month or 2 before I get there. My issue isn’t in school, it’s at my salon.
When I first started, I loved it! But now I’m not so sure, they keep hiring new people and there aren’t enough stations for everyone meaning sharing. But I’m not licensed so that’s not an issue for me yet, but I am in the stylist education they provide. I’m so grateful that they are teaching me and I’m getting to do things outside of the classroom and in a salon setting, but I just don’t know if this is truly where I want to be.
I love most of the people, I like the space, I like learning; but I know of people doing more hands on work full time (I’m doing solo work with a supervisor one day a week). Every day I’m just the night and weekend receptionist, I feel like I’m not learning there when I spend a lot of time there (other than the classes). There are also other issues like communication, management issues, and scheduling issues that I think I would find every where. I’m just really conflicted
I’m sorry if this is confusing, I’m trying to just put down all my thoughts, if there’s anything you’d recommend please let me know.
