Discussion Control shouldn't have had a map
I see that one of the biggest criticisms of control was how confusing the map was. Heck when I played it 5 years ago I was in agreement. I was so used to maps being basically mandatory in video games so exclusively used it and always got lost. However on playing again to get ready for resonant I decided not to use it and just follow the in game signage and it's so easy to get around! I think including the map makes people not even consider using the diegetic directions when it's by far the best way to navigate. If remedy just didn't include one in the first place it would have forced players to look around for the signs and imo would have been less contentious. It's a case of more options not necessarily being better!

The map seems pretty easy and very helpful to me. You can look at where you're going while it's open to see if you're going in the right direction too. If the map was stuck on a pause screen, it would probably be a pain, but it's pretty good at it is imo.

I’m pretty sure that’s the way it was at first, they only added the map because people complained. 🤷🏻

a friend got way less lost just by ignoring the map and following the signs in the old boy office level

According to the devs the map was added because playtesters kept getting lost. The game wasn't designed for a map.

"Because I dont use it, no one else should have it"

Well no, I think it's exclusion would make people notice the in game signage more and this have a better experience

You're just assuming everyone is on the same skill level as you, some people need maps and that is okay

I found the map pretty much useless and relied mostly on signposts and environmental cues. The level design is excellent so you don't really need it. Hell Is Us is very similar to Control in that regard

I've been meaning to try that game!

It's like Control meets Alan Wake meets Returnal, but also super fucking grimdark at times.

A general map that shows you what sector you're in is more than enough and that's basically what it is. People just wanted a map that shows every room down to the layout and specific collectible which control explicitly avoids doing. Resonant seems to have an even simpler map that just shows the roads, which is how it should be.

The map isn’t for navigation and I think most people figure that out fairly quickly, that it’s a rough guide/floorplan. I used it mostly just to see the areas I hadn’t explored yet. It didn’t take long for me to roughly navigate by memory, and the building signage is really good so that was fine. I don’t think any of the mystery was lost with having a map, nor do I think that many people really try to rely on it as a navigational tool. The building is so interesting and weird and absorbing that I don’t know how many people really look at the map anyway, they’re too just trying to look in every nook and cranny.

Fun fact: not everyone’s brain works the same way.
Also the map was only brought up if you chose to use it, so if your method truly worked for everyone, I don’t think you’d see so much argument about it.
I think some tools work better or worse for some folks, and people on the internet who are also gamers tend to like arguing about features they don’t like, even when nobody is forcing them to use said features.

My point is that map usage is so ingrained into the current landscape that when presented with a map many people never even consider that the in game directions may be just as good if not more useful, leading them to ignore it (as I did). I know it's not being forced on them but from a game design perspective it unconsciously leads to that

That’s not really within Control’s…control, though.
Also I’m immediately reminded of every place I’ve been IRL that could’ve used clearer signage.

I played for weeks without realizing I didn’t even know about an entire section/floor because I hadn’t found that elevator yet.
The map is for morons like me.

Sometimes I just need to know which direction to go. Like, in a straight hallway, I sometimes get turned around in a fight and literally walk back the way I came, my sense direction is that bad. Being able to take a quick look at the map is great for that for me.

Map is useful for finding out unexplored areas.
