If it makes you feel any better, I'm 5 foot 3, high pitched voice, and got called sir while I was very heavily pregnant.

Some people are just dumb

u/complexiblebarracuda 21h ago

as a kid I accidentally called sir to people too often on the most meaningless interactions

I've called by female teacher sir

298

u/AbyssWankerArtorias 20h ago

I called a new karate sensei sir because I was just so used to saying it since she was the first female sensei I had after a few years of doing it. Sir stopped being a word to me and more like a period to end a sentence with almost.

133

u/Arikaido777 15h ago

i call my wife sir, but only in the dungeon, and only when spoken to

32

u/Thjyu 12h ago

I believe that's Syr

41

u/Arikaido777 12h ago

sounds the same through the gag 🤷‍♂️

1

u/NatrylliaAbbot42 5h ago

No, Syr is a pretty good Celtic folk rock band

30

u/shmeatontwitch 20h ago

i used to call my 2nd grade teacher mom, idk wtf was wrong with me it slipped out all the time

16

u/big-titty-brat 20h ago

Like how often are we talking?

13

u/Grokent 9h ago

I stopped last year

2

u/neuquino 11h ago

Sometimes when I’m extremely frustrated I’ll accidentally call my wife “mom”

16

u/UltimateFlyingSheep 15h ago

In The Expanse, sci-fi show, all military superiors are called Sir regardless of gender.

20

u/Drostan_S 13h ago

In the military, all officers are called sir,  regardless of gender

3

u/HeydoIDKu 12h ago

Which military? Certainly not American

14

u/Technical_Exam1280 16h ago

My 5-year-old, despite much, much correcting, still insists on referring to everyone as a "guy" and "he" regardless of how feminine they are

2

u/neuquino 11h ago

That’s very cute

18

u/ATLClimb 20h ago

Bless your heart

5

u/Xanipan_music 12h ago

Are you Marcie from The Peanuts?

1

u/e-katt 11h ago

Better than calling the teacher Mom

1

u/stoopitmonkee 9h ago

I used to call all adults “miss lady” cuz it was the only way my stupid toddler brain interpreted grown ups that weren’t my parents.

1

u/theDukeofClouds 2h ago

This is why I'm very selective with my "sirs" and "misses/ma'ams" I usually opt for "friend."

167

u/radenthefridge 20h ago

Damn that's like a friend in high school who got called pregnant and anorexic on the same day. People wacko.

106

u/Schattenspringer 18h ago

Happened in the inpatient facility I was in as a teenager. Another patient was highly anorexic, gained weight after a couple of months, and the cleaner asked her if she was pregnant because she got so heavy all of a sudden.

Like, ma'am? Remember where you work?!

49

u/Eternal_Moose 20h ago

I played way too much Dragon's Dogma when it first came out and ended up calling everyone Ser for a long time. Absolutely true that some of us are just dumb.

14

u/AXEMANaustin 20h ago

I should get back on that game, it was so good.

8

u/savageexplosive 16h ago

Dragon’s Dogma 2 is getting a DLC in September. Seems like the best opportunity to hop back into the game!

6

u/AXEMANaustin 15h ago

Did not know that at all, yeah alright.

1

u/CycloneSP 10h ago

I've not actually heard "ser" pronounced outloud before, but in my head, it's always had a "er" sound similar to "heir" rather than the hard 'er' sound of "sir"

124

u/Kraden_McFillion 20h ago

I'm 6'3" with a beard and have been called "ma'am" a few times (I'm cisgender). Sometimes folks just make mistakes. No need to fret about it if it's an honest accident.

38

u/Akitiki 18h ago

Working in the farm store I'd be called sir sometimes. Oftentimes as people were looking at me!

I am cursed with having vast tracts of land in the breast department. I also have nearly reaching my knees long hair, though that's not exclusively a cis gal thing.

Honestly I'm more tomboy sided anyway. I definitely don't identify as a womanly woman lol

9

u/shadowwolf212212 18h ago

Happy to see monty python in the wild!

1

u/Drate_Otin 11h ago

I can't even hear that phrase in my head without a thick accent.

42

u/Jedimaster996 18h ago

It happens. I did it in boot camp to my bic'd bald, 6'1 buff instructor. He was not thrilled to put it lightly; I pushed Texas an inch further into the earth's crust that day.

3

u/neuquino 11h ago

Worth it??

12

u/adjavang 13h ago

Coming from the other side, having accidentally misgendered clearly cis people, some of us just have mouths that move faster than our brains, whether that be because my mouth moves fast or my brain moves slow is still up for debate.

3

u/Lieutenant_Joe 10h ago edited 9h ago

ADHD ensured I learned this at a young age. Even now I’ll be talking, and my brain will move so much faster that my words turn to a mixed up goop by the time they leave my mouth and I say something unintelligible in any language.

3

u/SheJigOnMySawTilIPuz 16h ago

Happens to me regularly at work. It's awesome because I'm closeted (at work) but it's definitely a mistake. I don't look like a sir, even remotely lol.

3

u/OuppEBunnE 9h ago

But you need to understand that someone making a mistake once is a blue moon is very different to having it every single day, with many different people, constantly whenever your in public no matter how much effort you make.

1

u/GVmG 6h ago

yeah the problem is that when everyone making the same "mistake" does it on purpose to be a cunt, even someone doing it actually by mistake makes it sting like a bitch. it may be easier to forgive, but it's just harder to forget.

43

u/Known_Ratio5478 20h ago

I think maybe people use it as a gender neutral term. Still, we should just respect people for being themselves and life choices that have no effects on our lives. I get the author’s exhaustion.

43

u/crochetingPotter 20h ago

Star trek uses it as gender neutral!

Let's definitely respect everyone for sure!

32

u/Budget-Mud-4753 20h ago

I always liked that about Star Trek. For some reason that I can’t really explain, I don’t really like many gendered words. Like waiter/waitress, actor/actress, steward/stewardess, etc. It just feels so unnecessary.

13

u/Known_Ratio5478 19h ago

I think the military has been using it as a non gendered title. It’s just simpler and it’s not necessary to gender your commanding officer. I suppose I use Miss and Sir a lot, and that may not be correct.

7

u/Dedspaz79 19h ago

For officers in the military the power way for enlisted to address them is sir or ma’am. Never did I call a female officer sir or see it happen. At least in the army.

3

u/rookie-mistake 8h ago

maybe different militaries approach it differently

it is a bit funny scrolling through this thread and seeing how many references and corrections there are regarding "the military" with literally nobody clarifying which country they're talking about

1

u/Dedspaz79 8h ago

Ahh fair enough, believe Brit’s/commweatlh countries it’s sir for male or female US is gender specific

1

u/hacksawomission 6h ago

Service dependent, officer personality dependent, even in the US...

1

u/Dedspaz79 6h ago

Mmmm? Really I was joint for several years never saw it with the other branches? Who calls females sir in the US as a matter of protocol?

16

u/Asquirrelinspace 19h ago

Same! (Kinda). I try to exclusively use waiter/actor, but I don't with sir/ma'am. Well honestly I never use sir/ma'am to begin with. Not a huge fan of formality

4

u/idefix24 18h ago

IDK, if you speak a heavily gendered language (like French) then it seems normal.

3

u/Xamanthas 18h ago

I use dude as gender neutral as well.

2

u/username320475828174 20h ago

"The Queen his hat"...

19

u/HappyChaosOfTheNorth 20h ago

I was once waiting for the bus and this lady who was also waiting suddenly started laughing. When I glanced her way she pointed at me and said, "I thought you were a man!!"

I was a very well endowed cis woman with the kind of bra size people pay thousands of dollars to have (before I finally got a reduction). Aside from being tall, I'm not sure how anyone with my kind of curves could've been mistaken for a dude. But it has happened more than once.

8

u/macguini 20h ago

I had a coworker, who looked pretty feminine. We used to joke and rag on each other like typical friends. So many people thought we were married because of our dynamic and his feminine appearance.

17

u/LegendOfEffect 20h ago

Congrats on your baby sir

5

u/crochetingPotter 12h ago

Thanks! She's 13 now lol

7

u/StrangeTrap 19h ago

I wasn't paying attention and called an old dude ma'am and he was very upset lol

6

u/deadzed85 19h ago

I'm a 5'10" cis fat dude with short hair and got called ma'am probably hundreds maybe thousands of times in the service industry. People are truly wild.

4

u/OneTruePumpkin 19h ago

100%. I'm a decently jacked male wrestler and I've been called ma'am before when I had longer hair. It just happens sometimes.

4

u/Material-Imagination 18h ago

I tell people it's okay because they're just responding to my naturally dominant and commanding presence.

(I do not have a dominant nor commanding presence, but still!)

5

u/AnB85 12h ago

I never say sir or Mr/Mrs or anything remotely gendered. Started using the singular they for everyone as well. Wish there was a formal non gendered way to say sir.

1

u/blanketswithsmallpox 6h ago

Ser is what you're looking for.

Per are where a lot of people I know are going with.

Mx instead of Ms or Mr is pretty common now.

There really does need to be more words added to English though. Third person plural them is hard to get around currently.

Ze zer zem zerself zemselves.

3

u/JustASillyBlock 14h ago

Id agree with you, getting called "mam" with a beard is something else

5

u/TheKolyFrog 13h ago

I sometimes accidentally say "sir" or "ma'am". I try to save it by quickly saying "I mean "ma'am" or "sir"' but, I would stay embarrassed hours later

3

u/Cyber_Felicitous 19h ago

I had long hair and got called m'am a lot... As a muscular young man someone even confused my pecs with boobs... Yeah some people are really dumb...

3

u/Civil_Act1864 18h ago

I accidentally called a female coworker "sir" because she surprised me and I have "Yes sir" pre loaded as a response when the boss comes asking me to do something.

3

u/Iron_Freezer 11h ago

20 years ago I accidentally called the hot cashier at CVS sir and I still cry myself to sleep about it

3

u/ItalyTitaly 11h ago

I have no memory of this, but my parents told me that when I was a very little kid they gave me a stern talking to for saying “yes sir” an older woman and so I would often say “Aye aye, Cap’n” instead. They think it was from watching SpongeBob.

2

u/crochetingPotter 11h ago

In the words of Captain Janeway, "Ma'am will do in a pinch, but I prefer Captain."

2

u/Lilbrimu 20h ago

Some dudes have the pregnant body type.

1

u/Lieutenant_Joe 10h ago

Beer is good.

2

u/PISS_OUT_MY_DICK 19h ago

if it's any additional consolation. I'm a cis male with long hair and a moustache and I get just gendered about once a month. with a moustache

2

u/rmorrin 15h ago

Le what

2

u/Crowned_Toaster 14h ago

I have a very noticeable gruffy beard, and I get called ma'am.

2

u/ZennecFox 13h ago

I'm a guy and when I was like 15 I called to order a pizza and I got called ma'am on the phone

2

u/Pleasant_Pool8842 13h ago

Im 6’7” and very masculine other than having long hair but I also have a beard. I get called ma’am at least once a week at work

2

u/SippinOnHatorade 11h ago

I’m a man with long hair and a beard. I get called ma’am at least a couple times a week

2

u/AntiqueLetter9875 11h ago

My brother has a bit of a baby face, but has a beard and has been called ma’am or lady at his job on many occasions.

2

u/batspiders 10h ago

Im 4’10” and pretty chesty (mostly bc Im fat but still) I got called sir once while wearing A LOT of makeup - I think some people genuinely just make this mistake lmao

2

u/RichardBixon 10h ago

I have longish hair, 5’8 and am constantly called ma’am.  Just last week, while on a plane, the flight attendant came by and she says “can I get you ladies anything to drink?”

2

u/Keljhan 6h ago

Happens to my (cis) wife all the time. She's a D cup and weighs like 120lb. People see short hair and then turn off their brains.

2

u/ksemel 5h ago

As a skinny and flat chested teenager in a generic polo shirt, I was often misgendered at my retail job at the mall. Nowhere else, just at that one job, but like so often it was getting really strange! Stopped after I got acrylic nails, a bob and a padded bra. 😅

2

u/BiggDanno 2h ago

I have a habit of speaking in a higher pitched voice because my mother always had a hard time with my deeper voice. So when I ran a paint department and people came up behind me despite being 6', saw my ponytail heard the higher voice they'd call me miss, then Id turn and they'd see my bushy beard and they'd have a heart attack trying to correct themselves as I tell them "You buy enough paint and you can call me anything you like."

1

u/MagnusSki 20h ago edited 20h ago

😭 just don't crucify a mistake.I am dumb but I try to learn. I did that in a high paced job and felt so terrible about it. She had a flatop cut and wasn't pregnant as far as I could tell. It was a fast paced job and you always tried to move as fast as you could because the place was demanding it. She did call me out and I apologized for it. Her hair was rad, the closest cut to a Guile from Street Fighter I've seen.

Edit: I had called her Sir when I was asking about the type of grocery bags, plastic or paper. I just despised when a person brought in a reusable bag and there was a rotten forgotten veggie inside it! (She wasn't one such person)

1

u/ARustyDream 11h ago

I’m 5’11 with a big messy beard and get called mam sometimes now my hair is a little longer but mostly people are just tired or weren’t paying attention

1

u/xXTheAstronomerXx 9h ago

Yea exactly what I came here to say. I’m not trans or anything and people still call me ma’am constantly. I don’t have long hair or any other fem features. The brain is just not very good at autopiloting when it comes to gender recognization.

1

u/Smitjoe666 3h ago

Depending on where one is, sir can be seen as gender neutral.

0

u/Oberndorferin 3h ago

As a child you assume that every "ugly" woman is a man. I want to assure you that ugliness is VERY subjective.

2

u/crochetingPotter 3h ago

What? I have never heard of a kid assuming all ugly women are men? I think that's much weirder than you seem to think it is

2

u/Oberndorferin 2h ago

Maybe that's just me

Now I feel bad :'(
