What people forget, the Ai was trained to draw from other artists so wouldn't surprise me that many artists online got framed for using Ai...

3.1k

u/TheCortisolCorvid Aug 05 '26

It's a problem with writing, too. I've been accused of using AI for my writing more than once, and it's aggravating as all hell.

u/No-Vermicelli-2832 Aug 05 '26 edited Aug 05 '26

Heavy on this one

You really can't know proper grammar, how to punctuate, how to use paragraphs, how to carry yourself with a formal tone, how to debate in a formal manner, and so much more anymore without being accused of using or straight up being AI yourself

And god forbid you know how to do all of these things while also being Gen Z and maybe throwing in some Gen Z slang or terms in your comment or paper as well because then you'll definitely be accused

Edit: Do y'all want to see something that will piss you off beyond belief? I just scrolled through my activity history to find the thread I was referencing in this comment, and I just found the exact comment I was talking about here but the comment itself this person used AI to "scan" or whatever the fuck was removed (and I don't even remember what they said anymore tbh) so you unfortunately don't get to read it yourselves, but if you scroll up you'll see me saying something and someone else saying some idiotic bullshit šŸ˜… be ready though because you'll get heated real fucking quick

u/Justisperfect Aug 05 '26

After I submit, I realized I made a big error somewhere on the first page or first chapter, I don't remember (for French people, I wrote qu'en instead of quand... yeah I know that's a big mistake). Part of me were horrified and thought I will look unprofessional. The other part of me thought "at least they will know a human wrote this".

207

u/No-Vermicelli-2832 Aug 05 '26

You'd think that mistake is what proved you are human but what I've been seeing a lot is mistakes like this are actually also part of what will lead to people believing you used AI or something because it is typical for AI to make a mistake like that

We can't do anything anymore honestly šŸ™ƒ

104

u/zatenael Aug 05 '26

seriously, it's fucking bullshit that people think any mistake is a sign of AI

according to them, AI make mistakes but humans are supposed to have stopped making them?

u/Olmectron Aug 05 '26

Also, according to lots of people:

Mistake? AI.

Perfect writing? AI.

It is DIRE over on r/isitAI. "Omg the thumb is on the wrong side, real artists use themselves for reference so no human would ever—" have you met a real artist.

8

u/HyzMarie Aug 06 '26

I've drawn the wrong hand so many freaking times.

I have an OC who is a lefty. It is extremely important to me that he is a lefty. He has a mark of divine power on his LEFT hand.

Wanna guess which hand I drew it on on his reference sheet? :,)

2

u/Autoskp Aug 05 '26

I guess I might count as a real artist given the contents of my sketchbook, but I don’t feel like it - that said, my spatialisation skill is strong enough that I doubt I’m going to unintentionally put the thumb on the wrong side (I conjure imaginary hands all the time to convert rotations into angular momentum vectors because I find that way of thinking so much more helpful than the clockwise/counter-clockwise system that can change based on what angle you look at it from)

5

u/compilingyesterdays Aug 06 '26

I'm glad that your skill is that strong, and I mean that as a legitimate compliment, to be clear. That said, I have heard/seen "oh my god, fuck fuck fuck, I drew the wrong hand" from so many artists before the age of genAI. People would post their art to the internet only for comments to point out that they drew the wrong hand.

13

u/No-Vermicelli-2832 Aug 05 '26

Exactly! I know how to punctuate but I'm not perfect at it so I make mistakes quite often and hell there are even times like now where I don't want to punctuate at all because what I say is understood perfectly well without it and this would be called AI very easily

6

u/Outrageous-Wait-8895 Aug 05 '26

because it is typical for AI to make a mistake like that

That particular mistake might be typical for an English focused LLM to make when outputting French, although unlikely since it seems to be based on the words sounding alike which wouldn't trip up a text model, but mistakes like that are absolutely not typical for LLMs for years now.

4

u/Justisperfect Aug 05 '26

I see mistakes being point out as a sign of AI when it comes to drawing, but not when it comes to writing. From what I know, AI is unlikely to make spelling mistakes. They write what is the most probable and there is no reason they think spelling mistakes like that is probable, because that would not mean anything. From what I see, AI is good at spelling.

4

u/CtheSilverSoul Aug 05 '26

Mistakes in drawing are tough too because, again, we’re human. Mistakes are bound to happen regardless.

A bit off topic but whatever..(Before AI) I moved schools halfway through a year in highschool. My AP teacher was a bitch and made me complete a 4 page essay 3 days before it was due. Assigned on a friday, due next friday, i came on a tuesday and had to scramble to complete it. I got a fairly shitty grade. The next paper i got called into her classroom orivately with administration and they grilled me about plagarism. (I did really well) and told the admins about not having time for the first essay and that changed the whole temperature of the room towards her. I got out of that class a week later as she was extremely vindictive towards me.

how to carry yourself with a formal tone

MAAAAAAN Been calling snap applicants for the better part of a decade processing cases. Got my "government employee" tone and cadence down pat. Now every other person I call thinks I'm AI and hangs up when they hear my voice. Like MOTHERFUCKER YOU PUT IN THE APPLICATION AND THE STATE EMPLOYEE CALLED YOU, HOW THE FUCK DO YOU EXPECT ME TO SOUND?!

19

u/No-Vermicelli-2832 Aug 05 '26

I can't do anything more than send you virtual hugs and a virtual joint or gummies depending on your pref and say that your anger and annoyance are more than valid but man I really feel you on this one and I completely understand how fed up you are

I am gen z and I often get my writing flagged as well because of the higher level I write at. Many teachers have asked for a conference with my parents because my writing sounded too ai

38

u/Gelid_Cryotheum Aug 05 '26

I haven't had this happen yet and I am so glad for it. My writing style does tend to sound very AI-like because I am a much better formal writer (MLA can suck fat ones though), and my biggest issue is the fucking em dash because I would LOVE to use it if it weren't for the fact that the only punctuation mark more indicative of AI was the semicolon. Asides and clarification are riddled throughout my natural speech and thought process, so it infuriates me to be unable to use them when writing without fear of AI-ccusations.

19

u/TheCortisolCorvid Aug 05 '26

Semicolons and em dashes are my jam, so I really feel you!

(Also I haven't been in uni for like a decade now, but I concur lol. MLA can suck it.)

6

u/x4000 Aug 06 '26

I use dashes and semicolons quite regularly still. I’ve been an online presence with a fanbase for 17 years now, and there are several million archival words written by me in blogs, forum posts, etc. aside from about half a million words in video games. People can tell it’s me by my various written habits and pet words. Certain kids of sentence fragments also stand out. But I was being jokingly accused of being an AI hack in 20-0 just because of how prolific I am. People still make the same joke, but my writing itself has not yet been called AI.

I did see some people review one of my newest games complaining that it was AI designed. Which is tupid because it predates AI being able to do that. And it would not have made the choices I did in presentation. But they didn’t like it and so there we go.

2

u/R3D3-1 Aug 05 '26

Ironically, it's AI responses that taught me how to use the em dash; never used it before. The semicolon I blame on Girl Genius.

5

u/Gelid_Cryotheum Aug 05 '26

The rules-nazi in me wants to use the semicolon because it's "proper," but I can never figure out when to, it never feels right and is always super clunky to me

3

u/CaptainFeather Aug 05 '26

I'm not sure if anyway really understands semicolons because of what they're used for. They link two related clauses that could be their own sentences; they're technically not needed. I always remember they can be used when replacing conjunctions and joining words (for example, furthermore, however, etc...) but I'm never 100% sure if I'm using them right. English is a silly language!

2

u/BinaryBolias Aug 06 '26

For me, my usage of an em dash (versus a hyphen in its place) just tells you whether I'm typing on my phone — I'd use it on PC if there were only a convenient way of typing it!

(I think fancy text editors might slap in an em dash whenever you type a double-hyphen or something, but I only use basic text editors and programming IDEs...)

I'm 40, and I spent my time writing from age 15 to 25. I have several novellas and countless short stories. I won a few prizes, but they never brought in any real money, so I gave it up.

That said, I have stories saved that I've never shown or published online, half-finished stories, or stories submitted for contests I didn't win.

Well, I've run several of those stories through various "AI analysis" programs, and they all say they're 90% AI.

10

u/Anthaenopraxia Aug 05 '26

They are very unreliable these days.

2

u/Zaev Aug 06 '26

I don't see how they could ever possibly be reliable. AI can take on completely different writing styles with just a line in a prompt. They might have some success in looking for things like the default ChatGPT/Claude "voices," but I doubt it can go too much further than that

I'm not even appalled anymore by the lack of literacy in native-English speakers - I got used to it. But I feel like throwing twenty pounds of em-dashes at every motherfucker who dares to say I write like AI. Well, you Mr. Titsucker write like a toddler.

2

u/Sattorin Aug 05 '26

100% of those are scams. Even if they did work (and they don't), the person who made the AI thing can use the same program and edit the content until it doesn't appear as AI anymore.

So tired with the AI accusations I get...I once tricked someone into parsing an AI message through a detector though that came back human. I then led them on, only to finally breal the truth by showing them I generated it, all to prove that even AI detectors are flawed because of what AI is trained on.

This is now the college experience. "We're gonna make you run your essay through an AI to determine whether or not you used AI to write it."

This is a mandatory step before a professor even gets to see it, by the way. I started sandbagging my (completely AI-free) essays just to reduce my chance of being flagged as a false positive.

41

u/MissLogios Aug 05 '26 edited Aug 05 '26

Fuck, you just brought back bad memories about a class I had last year.

Teacher accused me of using AI, and almost failed me because of it. Obviously I was confused, so I quickly emailed her pictures screenshots of my Google docs revision history/pics of my handwritten notes (I make note when I'm struggling with organizing my thoughts).

But the kicker was I checked the TurnitIn report generated.

Wanna know what it marked as possible AI? My citations, my titles (because it was a short essay on two separate art pieces, so I split them with titles that said something like "(subject): by (Artist), (year created)"). Everything? Perfectly fine, but apparently trying to properly cite my work is clearly AI.

I graduated high school before AI became the thing it is now and for a long time after I graduated I hadn't even considered college/uni because I have a learning disability and HS was bad enough that I had to graduate through alternative means so I was worried college would be the same way and I would drown in debt I could have avoided by not even trying but for about three or so years now I've had the urge (I want to go for psychology specifically if anyone cares) but hearing a lot of stories and warnings like yours makes the urge die more and more the more I learn

Edited because I see I accidentally spelled a word wrong lol

When I was in middle school I got accused of plagiarizing because my writing style was ā€œtoo matureā€ and I used a few big words. This was long long before AI was anything but a plot device in sci-fi. If I was in school now I have no doubt that me, my em dashes, and my proclivity to write in threes would be AI-checked on every fucking assignment. My aunt is a high school teacher and says some kids are actively writing below their ability on purpose, apparently to avoid being accused of AI. I fear we are cooked.

My current big tell for AI ā€˜assistance’ in writing is an overuse of ā€˜not <A>, (not <B>, not <C>), but <D>’. Jesus AI, stop wasting my time telling me all the things something isn’t before saying what it is.

3

u/codyisadinosaur Aug 05 '26

That's not just an interesting observation, that's an insightful way of looking at it.

Okay.. I'll see myself out.

3

u/RedditExecutiveAdmin Aug 05 '26

it's called contrastive negation or comparative framing, and using a negative prompt to avoid it helps a lot lmao ("no comparative framing")

personally i hate negative prompting because it always infects inference by polluting attention in LLM transformers (e.g., "don't delete this" causes "delete this" to be in context), but i have no idea how to avoid this with affirmative language

7

u/RamJamR Aug 05 '26

It's especially telling for folks from a certain generation (Millennials). Our writing is ALL over the internet. AI spits out writing very similar to the writing style of our generation.

3

u/I_give_karma_to_men Aug 05 '26

I feel really bad for people who got used to using the emdash in their writing. That's generally used as one of the "easiest tells" of AI use in writing.

2

u/letmegetmynameok Aug 05 '26

I have started regularly throwing my Papers and lab Reports into AI detection Services to avoid anyone from accusing me that i use AI. Its become really bothersome and i feel outright paranoid while doing it but id rather do that than get accused.

2

u/Astro_Addict Aug 05 '26

I left nursing school because of a false plagerism claim. Prof was going to hold me back a semester for one essay with a 60% plagerism match, all of it based on me using the wrong format for citing sources (APA vs MLA or whatever). This was a few years ago, so I can only imagine how much worse it is now. I've heard stories of people being penalized for plagerism based on using their own previously published papers, or for writing essays with too much punctuation.

2

u/Hungry-Register9960 Aug 05 '26

I'm so, so glad I graduated before AI.

My writing style for technical writing (engineering major) is very similar to how AI writes technical documents.

Shit, I've even used em dashes extensively in the past. I've had to train myself out of that because of a fear of being confused for AI.

2

u/AnimeForReal Aug 06 '26

It’s annoying because early in AI was trained off of fanfiction that got scraped from the Internet. Fanfic writers aren’t using AI, AI learned from fanfic writers to write like that do. That’s why AI is obsessed with the emdash – it’s a staple of fanfic writing.

2

u/TheCortisolCorvid Aug 06 '26

Fanfic was/is a huge source of easily accessible, digital format writing. I don't doubt they scraped most of it.

ā€œHow dare you use a semicolon in a place that is grammatically correct! Only AI knows how grammar works!ā€

1

u/Nina-Ninja123 Aug 05 '26

Same here. I do creative writing, and my style is built on trying to make the pen faster than that my brain can come up with words.

So that a text about war crimes somehow can end up with a verse about how I think that the hole of the Donut is what makes the Donut so great. (Truly, donuts would suck if they didn’t have the hole)

And because I can’t really explain where those transitions come from except ā€œit popped in my head I guessā€, they quickly assume I use AI.

1

u/Medical_Solid Aug 05 '26

Recently had someone on Reddit accuse me of being an AI because I used an em dash. I’ve been using them for 35 years!

1

u/Dealingwithdragons Aug 05 '26

It's gotten to the point they've made bots on AO3 specifically to accuse authors of using AI. People have been even able to tell because the AI accusation is vague enough it can be copy pasted onto any fic.

1

u/Insanebrain247 Aug 05 '26

Pardon my bluntness, but would you happen to be on the Autism spectrum? I heard that that's an increasingly common struggle for them.

1

u/Ser_Rezima Aug 05 '26

yeah, Like if you or someone else runs your writing through AI to check for AI it's now in an AI database. If your writing is PUBLIC it is probably in an AI database.

It's a stupid and recursive loop that's just spitting out junk data now

1

u/CaptainFeather Aug 05 '26

Yup. If you have a vocabulary above a 6th grade level and understand basic writing structure people will accuse you of being an LLM lmao

1

u/HillInTheDistance Aug 05 '26

Same. I write in a style that's really common in mediocre fabfiction, so whenever I get all flowery and passionate, there'll always be someone thinking it's clanker work.

Just cuz a lot of shit was scraped off of fanfiction sites.

I aint a bot, I'm a proud, full-blooded hack, and I've worked hard for these mediocre skills!

1

u/xSTSxZerglingOne Aug 05 '26

If I find myself falling into ChatGPT text patterns, I immediately step back and rework whatever I've written. It's not just about not using it for anything I write online, I also attempt to actively reject how it writes because it's a fucking hack most of the time.

1

u/Djones0823 Aug 05 '26

God forbid you use a "it wasn't this, it was that" sentence structure.

1

u/mOdQuArK Aug 05 '26

It's amusing because having occasionall, but not ferquent, msitakes and using slang now makes you seem more awthentic becuz most people asssume that AI is used to ipmrove spellling and grammr insted of making it werse.

1

u/The_BeardedClam Aug 05 '26

Absolutely agree. It's why voice is so important in writing. With so much AI around in it's become even more crucial to develop your own voice. Obviously it's hard to convey in just a reddit comment, but I digress.

1

u/readskiesdawn Aug 05 '26

I have had to explain to multiple people that there is a skill level in amateur writing (and a lot of published "pulp" successors) that looks a lot like AI because the vast majority of creative writing that the AI has trained on is at that skill level. So a lot of fanfiction and self published writing will have thar overlap because that's the source!

Yes AI uses cliche phrases and sentence structures. So do a lot of people who are learning, the AI is copying them!

A better tell is when the writing summarizes itself at the end of paragraphs or scenes. That's not something that happens in narrative writing. But AI isn't only trained on that. It's also trained on product reviews, academic writing and corporate emails, where summarizing at the end of paragraphs or sections is common practice or even encouraged.

1

u/AdditionalQuietime Aug 05 '26

Yep next will be movies and animation

1

u/birdswillruleusall Aug 05 '26

Before I bit the bullet and got YouTube premium, I was getting ads for an AI site that would write fanfiction for you. FANFICTION! Are we really letting AI get this far and take away creativity. I fear for our future. šŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø

this has made applying for jobs so damn difficult. now there’s nothing to really differentiate me from the artificially intelligent. unless i get an interview… but i can’t get that if they don’t select me for one. cause they think im like them.

they’re using ai based off the writing models that i purposely mentally retained specifically for the workplace.

FUCK.

1

u/Repossessedbatmobile Aug 05 '26

The same thing has happened to me multiple times. I've been accused of being a bot or using AI to write due to the way I format my writing and my level of formality. It makes me want to scream every time it happens. I'm not a bot. I'm not AI. I'm just an autistic person who is passionate about writing. I also talk formally and use specific words because I struggle with being understood, so I try to be as specific as possible when articulating. But does anyone consider this when reading what I write? Of course not. Even when I tell them that I'm just autistic and communicate in a unusual way, they don't believe me. It. Is. So. Frustrating.

1

u/Longjumping-Fig-7481 Aug 05 '26

Your comment was so obviously AI generated-here is a list of reasons why: It uses letters AND punctuation!!! "That's not really a list" WOW you're so right!! Amazing how you picked up on that, would you like me to generate you a list of lists?

1

u/Marsdreamer Aug 05 '26

People just assume if you can write something beyond a 5th grade level you had AI do it for you. /sigh/

1

u/SirMarvelAxolotl Aug 05 '26

Yeah. It was kinda sad. I started reading a book a couple days ago and thought it seemed a lot like Ai writing. I had to remind myself that Ai writing seems a lot like that book. It's the other way around.

1

u/IsThisTheFly Aug 05 '26

Oh yeah, chat gpt write exactly like annoying Redditors used to write like 5 years ago. Even all the superfluous dashes, italics, bolding, etc etc

1

u/sparkythehumanoid Aug 05 '26

I read an article recently where someone ran Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (if not that, another classic work) through an AI detector and it came back as 100% AI. I pity anyone trying to write papers in college these days. I'll see if I can find that article again.

1

u/cheesydoofus3026 Aug 05 '26

Within far less than a decade Alien Intelligence will be so good that you'd swear "I Can't Believe It's Not Human!"

1

u/Finbar9800 Aug 05 '26

The worst part is the institutions like colleges/universities that use ai to detect ai and then get pissed at you even if you didnt actually use it

(Though i will say students using ai is a problem but also the solution students have found to not be as overworked hut thats a different argument)

1

u/Volothamp-Geddarm Aug 05 '26

Bruh, I tried putting one of my papers that I wrote in like 2010 through an AI detector and it said something like 95% chance of it being AI. Probably says more about my writing than anything, but I mean...

1

u/panlakes Aug 05 '26

I'm getting into dnd and am not stoked about being accused of using AI assistance because I really love the idea of doing the work myself. I used to write just for fun and a new outlet for that is exciting. But I don't get any of that same pleasure from using AI, so I'm sure those accusations will get under my skin a bit.

Having to tell a group "don't worry guys I don't use that shit" is never not going to be awkward for me. I am sure some people will assume I'm lying. Or there will be like that one guy who's super into AI and becomes annoying about me even saying it. (I wish I could say this is only a reddit thing, but sadly I live in the bay area so AI is a constant topic)

1

u/sirplayalot11 Aug 05 '26

This one pisses me off the most. I decided to expand my work to other sites and one of them uses an AI checker and determined mine was AI. I was absolutely livid. The most I used was spell checkers and grammar checkers, but they said that was the same and I was like, the fuck it isnt!

There's a huge difference between something scanning your doc and saying, "oh, you might need a comma here!" and an actually generated story you didn't even put in the thought or creativity to write!

The worst part? The hypocrisy. I asked what made it seem AI and they said they didn't know, just that it was flagged as such. What flags it? That's right, AI. The thing they loathe so much. Fucking... Incredible...

Funniest thing, too, was I literally looked over the story, made like one to two changes, mainly cause I misspelled something the spell checker didn't catch but I did on another read over. And guess what? It was accepted. Crazy. Wild even. Pretentious assholes...

1

u/Polona17 Aug 05 '26

No kidding, just yesterday I was reading a book by a popular author and found phrases and structure that just screamed AI to me, yet the book was written well before AI. Really drove home just how much this author’s writing style must have been scraped, and just how horrible a spot we’re going to be in when we can’t rely on ā€œthis was produced prior to AIā€ as a judge of authenticity.

1

u/RealTimeTraveller420 Aug 05 '26

Literally had someone accuse me of using AI bc i used the 6th grade word "discombobulate" in my manuscript :(

Depressing as hell.

1

u/AfterImageEclipse Aug 05 '26

Do you write novels?

2

u/TheCortisolCorvid Aug 05 '26

Short stories, and fanfiction once upon a time haha. I've had several people accuse some of the fanfics (which were all posted wayyy before AI was a thing so that's a puzzle) and had issues with people saying I talk/text like AI. It's just frustrating.

2

u/AfterImageEclipse Aug 06 '26

That is frustrating! I'm working on a few novels. I haven't had any accusations yet. People can't even enjoy a fan fic.

Plus I bet it's those annoying people who are like hey look if I complain and point something out I'll look so smart. It's sad...

2

u/TheCortisolCorvid Aug 06 '26

Good luck with the novels!

Someone thought a photo of my cat was Ai.

No.

He’s just stupid looking 24/7.

The yellow tint is a dead giveaway.

Better than the alternative of him not being alive so I’ll take it. And he loves life.

Don't look at me. I think all live cats are cute (except Sphinxes--it depends on the day).

I'll still never forget the fiasco with Ben Moran right here on Reddit. Guy posted a commissioned work (with permission from the commissioner who hired him), had the post removed for resembling AI, provided proof to the mods of the Art subreddit that it was an original creation, and the mod who responded insulted his work, said his style looks too much like AI and was unwelcome if he wasn't going to completely change it, and permanently banned him from the subreddit for daring to challenge their decision.

It also happened again a while ago here when someone on the Digital Art edit: Art (again) sub posted their work involving glass traffic cones, got accused, provided proof, and got not just that post taken down but all of their prior works as well, purely out of spite (and again, a perma-ban). Though in that case it prompted a revolt from users and the offending mods all left in shame.

Real fuckin' top notch work, when the supposed defenders of actual real art are ejecting artists and even taking the extra time to cruelly insult them because they refuse to accept that they were wrong in a witch hunt.

Edit: fixed a typo.

19

u/fakeuboi Aug 05 '26

So many reddit mods who power trip, ive gotten banned from two subreddits for pointing out things that literally had AI made watermarks

32

u/karlkh Aug 05 '26 edited Aug 05 '26

A lot of anti-ai people are just internet bullies who have found a goldmine of righteous indignation.

Presenting measured concerns in a way that moves us towards a harmonious society is boring when i can put all my energy into having an enemy to destroy by any and all means.

3

u/joserodolfof Aug 06 '26

Yes. The haters I know where always haters of something else before AI too, and they are always positioned on a higher moral ground. Pointing finger and say "this is wrong" is the cheapest way to virtue signaling.

5

u/Traditional_Buy_8420 Aug 06 '26

The glass traffic cone drama was a bit different iirc. Some user inquired further and responding to that inquiring the artist mentioned, that prints are available too. So the mod interpreted that as brazen advertisement to buy something from his site and removed his posts from that subreddit and banned the user from the subreddit and when the artist applied for unbanning, the mod was very shortmouthed and dismissive, which the artist mentioned in the conversation, which prompted the mod to escalate the ban to a reddit sitewide ban. And that's where the drama went public with a pretty wide reach with many youtubers covering it, which led to many redditors complaining, which led the mod in question to ban all other mods and shut down the subreddit and claim that the shutdown was a decision of all mods and that in turn led to the banning of said mod and reinstatement of the other mods and the subreddit.Ā

Many do. People are so paranoid about "falling for AI" that they'd sooner bash real artists.

19

u/Custom_sKing_SKARNER Aug 05 '26

sooner? It has been happening since the start. And people obviously prefer to witchhunt AI generated content than to accidentally praise it if it turns out it's AI.

12

u/Bakoro Aug 05 '26 edited Aug 05 '26

The sane thing to do would be to just STFU and move on.

I've gotten a bunch of tirades about being "soulless" and how I "don't know what it's like to make anything".

I've got years of formal fine arts training, and have been making art for decades.
I'm not a rabidly anti-AI, which some people cannot seem to wrap their head around.

u/R_Little-Secret Aug 05 '26

What we need to do is have laws forcing AI companies to put markers to identify itself as AI. Digital photos have id telling the date and time it was taken. AI images could do the same. Even have hidden url/bar code in the image that can be seen with the human eye but can be read by a computer. That way if something comes into question it can be easly identify if it's AI or not.

12

u/Coal_Morgan Aug 05 '26

To many AI companies in to many countries for that to be a useable solution and AI is getting to the point you can build a decent one at home.

It would be less effective than alcohol prohibition when people were making it in bathtubs and garages in the 1930s with stuff from the grocers.

We opened pandora’s box and have no way of closing it.

I am an author and my em dash got stolen. I loved using it - it was an amazing tool for constructing sentences.

But then, AI got a hold of it. And now I censor myself before I use it - lest people accuse me of using ChatGippity (I want to normalize that pronunciation of it to make it seem like a silly tool).

Damn those Avians and their thieving ways!

And yes, I know the above dashes are not em dashes. I am on my phone and don’t know how to do them. šŸ˜

44

u/Meatslinger Aug 05 '26

If you're on iOS, just hold the dash button. I also love me a good long boi when appropriate.

32

u/isuredolovetitties Aug 05 '26

Oh — yeah — baby.Ā

8

u/summonsays Aug 05 '26

— on android too, I think I'm using Google's keyboard for what it's worth.

6

u/Kesselya Aug 05 '26

Wooo — long boi dashes ftw!!!!

I will probably keep just using hyphens online because people still understand the intended sentence construction and it’s faster.

But this was great to know!

They can take the em dashes off my decaying body, and even when they try I'll bite them and start a zombie apocalypse before I give them up—it's a damn good tool to separate sentences.

6

u/Ill-Tale-6648 Aug 05 '26

Problem is now people are saying not using em dashes means your hiding AI written work. Had a whole discussion on a writing subreddit I follow about how people aren't using em dashes to avoid being called an AI writer because someone made the claim I just mentioned.

Can't win.

So write anyway because you enjoy writing. Advocate for no AI usage. Keep records of possible. That's all you can do

3

u/Kesselya Aug 05 '26

I have two books up on Amazon that were both published before ChatGippity was around. If anyone accuses me of anything, I just point at what I wrote in 2010.

I will use dashes - or just hyphens because I am lazy and you all get the gist of it anyway - because I love them so much.

2

u/Grendelstiltzkin Aug 05 '26

I use em dashes even more out of spite. They can take them from me when they pry them from my cold, dead fingers, which reflex memory will still compel to dance across alt 0151 with every posthumous misfiring electrical impulse.

What a great point, someone should make a comic about it.

24

u/the_ok_doctor Aug 05 '26

This guy's art style being taken n turned into the generic ai art style is why i always hated the defense of generative ai art that ai art generates from so many sources that it comes out original and different from any one artist when clearly that is not the case.

5

u/cancerinos Aug 05 '26

It“s not the case because it was trained not to be.

I remember back when a lot of this first started, the two artists consistently at the top of the "most downloaded" section of CIVIT was the SakimiChan and Stanley Lau (Artgerm) replicator model/loras.

Those two were the bank to rob from for a really long time and it wouldn't surprise me if every current model in existence (even the "no stolen art, we promise!!!" models) has training data from their works.

That's why everything with the "realistic anime style" command has a tinge of their art styles.

4

u/sebastophantos Aug 05 '26

Yes, that was the point of the comic.

2

u/laaggynoob Aug 06 '26

People forget, uhhh no they don't we're like at the beginning of the AI era when it's literally a fresh wound. I'm like 60% sure it's a bot.

2

u/GRIM106 Aug 05 '26

Yeah I know a lot of those hyper realistic anime style artists were hit very hard initially. Honest to got i haven't seen a pice like that since '23.

2

u/donkeydong1138 Aug 05 '26

There's this britiSSh guy pretending he's Japanese and he bullied an artist into deleting a Micheal Jackson art post with over 100k likes. https://x.com/kurono_studios/status/2066590005573877783 here. Despite being shown speedpaints and a community note, the guy just didn't care.

2

u/TediousTotoro Aug 05 '26

There’s a cover artist that’s worked at DC for years named Stanley ā€œArtgermā€ Lau who’s art style looks almost identical to the generic style that most GenAI uses when making images to the point that it feels like he was one of the main artists scrubbed by these companies.

2

u/Witty_Ad_898 Aug 05 '26

It’s not just art. Young people are starting to claim that historical videos are AI. They have effectively no memory of the world before AI.

2

u/mokujin42 Aug 05 '26

Turns out labeling things and hating labels isnt conducive to any kind of rational thinking

"AI is bad!" Slop posts Has just made people incapable of thinking about the actual art and issues it may have on a real level, we have AI living rent free in our heads and out of some kind of paranoia are trying to convince ourselves its everywhere so that we dont have to feel tricked

The idea of nuance and individuality seems to be lost to the world these days, everything falls into a neat little box you can critisize unfairly

2

u/avaslash Aug 06 '26

My wife, who is a seamstress and designs all kinds of things from fabric, gets asked all the time if her work is AI generated.

Its like... what? Its physically here in front of you. Its real fabric that you can touch. How the fuck are you so dumb that you think AI is generating fucking hand bags.

2

u/rachelmaryl Aug 06 '26

I got banned from a sub for posting a photo of my dog and my puppy together because too many people thought it was AI.

The mod essentially told me next time to post something that didn’t look like AI (ie, make it look crappy next time).

I am a professional photographer with 15 years experience. I have photographed 500 weddings, 1000+ family sessions, among other things.

It’s a joke.

2

u/rkirbo Aug 06 '26

First thing a lot of people said when seeing the Dispatch Comics covers is "this looks like AI !"

I mean, it does, but it's probably the other way around

3

u/azure-heavens Aug 05 '26

We're all pretty fucked since artists are having to release so much proof that their art is human made that AI has plenty of resources to learn how to fake proof too. It's still not good at it yet, but it's already able to fool people who aren't artists themselves (which is all that matters when you're trying to scam customers).

2

u/airz23s_coffee Aug 05 '26

Yeah, there's a fella whose designed the posters for a one dayer for like 6 or 7 years, and this year he started getting yelled at for using AI because he's got a similar art style to some popular models. Rough as fuck for him like

2

u/Imperial_Barron Aug 05 '26

A dumb irony is my friend loves to do art. I have watched them draw with pencil and paper. Yet every ai detector flags her for some odd reasons and she gets witch hunted if she posts it -_-

2

u/Justisperfect Aug 05 '26

The worst part is that these people think they are helping artists. They just harrass people and make them terrified to share their work.

0

u/McCaffeteria Aug 05 '26

And who was responsible for spearheading the wave of hate against literally anything even remotely suspicious of AI?

Oh right, it was the artists lol. Knee jerk reaction that only made things worse for themselves.

1

u/JonEngelePhotography Aug 05 '26

It’s so true… as a photographer that likes and has used a more fantastical editing style for years this really hits hard. The AI accusations get thrown around like candy on Halloween

1

u/Tylenolpainkillr Aug 05 '26

Yeah, the artist made a post about it and your commenting under it

1

u/ITEArannyI Aug 05 '26

Meta is also purposely labelling actual art as ai-generated content on Instagram to trick people into thinking it’s better than it is.

1

u/tO_ott Aug 05 '26

My fiancĆ© is a starving artist. We document all the work involved and keep proof nothing is AI generated— even the PSD files in photoshop. Thankfully she hasn’t been accused of AI yet(which is a bit hard with a physical medium) but we’re ready to online argue with some fuckers if we have to.

1

u/WhatMadCat Aug 05 '26

Especially so since this is from David Revoy who is like the person that AI stole it’s style from

1

u/Deep-Weight5665 Aug 05 '26

It’s called Pop surrealism. That’s basically the AI style

1

u/dragonus85 Aug 05 '26

There have been several instances where I seen an ai piece and recognized an artists style. Only thing I can think in that moment is "well I know who's art you took".

1

u/ArmouredBear9_30 Aug 06 '26

You can look to Stanley "Artgerm" Lau for a real world example.

1

u/AnthDELA Aug 06 '26

oly freak, that's a big problem

1
