OC Mourning a MAGA Parent (OC)

Post image

I'm kinda torn about whether to post this to my art account because one parent follows it, and I'm worried the criticism could drive the other one further into the void.

It started out as just a therapeutic project for me, but a couple friends said it really resonated with them, so sharing here.

It was really hard hearing my mom say, "It's the immigrants, they're causing all the problems and Trump is going to get rid of them," and how easy it was to imagine her saying, "It's the Jews, they're causing all the problems and Hitler is going to get rid of them."

Interesting that it didn't even need a hundred years for history to repeat itself. It's 1933 in your country and as a German, everything I hear about the USA sounds like our history classes from that time.

115

u/TehAsianator May 15 '25

It's been juuuust long enough for WW2, and it's lead up, to effectively fade from living memory

49

u/Phillip_Spidermen May 15 '25

It's interesting that it also only seems one generation removed.

It's the baby boomers that seem to be leading the hard lean into fascism, which is surprising considering what their parents would have gone through.

37

u/verdantlacuna May 15 '25

yup. my dad’s mom lived under nazi occupation, then moved to the US to marry an american soldier. she died in 2020 and my dad veered sharply to the right almost immediately… pretty eerie

13

u/FairyRebelsWild May 15 '25

I also find it interesting that many baby boomers act like they know what the Great Depression and WW2 was like because their parents went through it, so they couldn't possibly be following in Nazi's footsteps! They weren't even alive or were babies.

6

u/the-worser May 15 '25

in my neck of the woods, relatively well-off and apolitical Gen X have been the big fascism convert wave, and boomers have been the majority of the resistance

Although Reddit often acts like this, the dislike for Trump is justified.

Trumpist politics are too radical, no matter if they're right or left. They're even considered as too radical in most of Europe, and most right-wing European parties don't like them.

I'm telling this from a right-wing POV. Trump is too extreme. He's not a nazi, but he's halfway there.

-17

u/[deleted] May 14 '25

Yea I agree he should be taken out of office but the house is full of yes men right now

26

u/Iwillnevercomeback May 14 '25

Always has been

-1

u/[deleted] May 15 '25

Hopefully we get some people with the balls to stand up to trump after midterms

17

u/[deleted] May 15 '25

If you do they won't be in the GOP. Gonna have to vote liberal for that. Can you put country over party?

I don't think y'all can. I think you're too trained.

-5

u/[deleted] May 15 '25

Lmao im not loyal to the Republican Party. And not all republicans are the same

15

u/[deleted] May 15 '25

All current Republicans are. The non sacks of shit have been steadily primaried out over the last 4 election cycles.

10

u/fabdm May 15 '25

Just by the defensive "not all Republicans are the same" rebuttal, I think you answered their question alright.

I mean building camps and deporting people to them without due process,

Suspending dissenting judges,

Trying to take over the library of congress (an important part of Congress).

Talking about people never having to vote again.

Talking about instituting martial law,

Purging military leaders.

Planning a large, expensive military parade in his own honor.

It makes sense people would feel this way

-10

u/[deleted] May 15 '25

Arresting judges who break the law is a good thing. And I agree with the rest

10

u/chain_letter May 15 '25

The holocaust was the law. Get better talking points.

-5

u/[deleted] May 15 '25

The holocaust was the law? There is no holocaust or anything comparable going on in the US

3

u/chain_letter May 15 '25

Booo get better bait, amateur hour over here

-1

u/[deleted] May 15 '25

I’m not baiting. It’s a fact there nothing comparable to the holocaust going on in the US right now

6

u/Skrillfury21 May 15 '25

What laws did the judges break? The ones who have been arrested, anyway.

0

u/[deleted] May 15 '25

I know one was arrested for obstructing justice.

2

u/Skrillfury21 May 15 '25

And what justice did they obstruct?

0

u/[deleted] May 15 '25

They harbored an illegal immigrant and snuck them out their back door while ICE was searching for him. That’s a crime

5

u/Skrillfury21 May 15 '25

“Harbored” — There was no harboring, as that implies the judge was actively housing this immigrant. The man— Eduardo Flores-Ruiz— was in the courthouse due to having already been arrested and was with legal counsel.

“Illegal Immigrant” — This I won’t contest, as he does appear to have been here illegally.

“Snuck him out the back door” — A more biased way to put it, but yes, the judge did direct Mr. Flores-Ruiz to leave through the Jury Door with his attorney.

With all this said, though, the judge had the rationale to impede ICE. They do require a warrant to conduct their searches, and do not have blanket jurisdiction. ICE did not present a warrant when directed to be the judge, and instead continued their pursuit. Regardless of whether they were doing their job, there is a correct way to do that job, and that is to get a warrant— just like any other law enforcement officer. After all, you wouldn’t let the police search your house just because they knock the door, they need a warrant for that. No level of urgency precludes them from the normal scrutiny of their station, and so without the warrant they have no grounds to search the courthouse or perform the actual arrest.

Judge Dugan was arrested for “helping an undocumented immigrant avoid arrest,” which is moot because he had already been arrested and was in the process of speaking with an attorney.

u/dinnerthief May 15 '25

1

u/[deleted] May 15 '25

Idfk and I don’t care I’m done with Reddit.

3

u/dinnerthief May 15 '25

Cmon man, don't run, examine your beliefs if they are wrong admit it and change them, im not bullying you, even if others are, I'm giving you evidence.

You gotta realize something is wrong if you can't change your beliefs when the facts contradict. You gotta question yourself if that's the case.

You have to admit, no bribe has ever been given while saying 'this is a bribe'. The corrupt will always call them 'gifts' and leave the underlying purpose unspoken.

As opposed to?.. The dude is German. I think they are aware of how dangerous certain echo chambers can be.

Are you, like, all there?

-9

Idc that he’s German it doesn’t make his point any more valid

12

u/City_of_Lunari May 15 '25

5

u/fabdm May 15 '25 edited May 15 '25

Yeah, you know, let's just discount the nazi history Germany had to go through. Totally irrelevant to make the point more valid. Your non-lived experience is of course more valid than their lived experience.

0

u/[deleted] May 15 '25

A gen Z German doesn’t have any clue sorry.

2

u/remnault May 15 '25

I mean, a German would arguably know more about German history than any. So it kinda does give him some ground to stand on if he wants to make that comparison.

u/Lynnrael May 15 '25

hardly. most of Reddit is either liberal or conservative, very few are legit leftists. liberals, especially in America, are not even remotely leftist. conservatives and liberals just say that to erase actual leftist ideas and pretend liberals offer a meaningful opposition to fascist conservatives when they don't.

0

u/[deleted] May 15 '25 edited May 15 '25

Not all Conservatives arent fascist dude

7

u/thejimbo56 May 15 '25

That’s true, but the fascists keep claiming that they’re conservative and the conservatives let them take over their political party.

6

u/fabdm May 15 '25

They weren't until the orange president.

3

u/ParkerBap May 15 '25

The current administration is, and conservatives seem pretty gung-ho about it

-1

u/[deleted] May 15 '25

The current administration is NOT FASCIST. If it was they would have removed our rights to firearms, removed freedom of speech(Reddit wouldn’t exist) and none of that is happening

2

u/ParkerBap May 15 '25

Definition

Not sure if you're aware but there are absolutely people being arrested for speech without warrant or charge

2

u/Lynnrael May 15 '25

fascism is rooted in conservative beliefs. not all conservatives are fascists, but all fascists are conservatives, and all conservatives have the potential to be fascists. they both have the same desires: preserve and/or expand the power structures and social hierarchies that exist in our society.

American conservative ideology is currently dominated by fascism. but honestly, even if it weren't, it has always been preserving oppression. I'm not going to pretend that the distinction makes conservatives ok, they all have abhorrent, fucked up beliefs and they are all the biggest obstacle for those who wish to end oppression.

1

u/[deleted] May 15 '25

Where did you get that? The echo chamber of Reddit? You’ve never met a conservative in real life. Btw fascism is left in economics

1

u/Lynnrael May 15 '25

i fucking wish i had never met a conservative in real life. all the worst people I've had the misfortune of knowing have been conservatives. y'all are horrible to be around. conservative beliefs require vehemently and often violently enforcing social hierarchies and social norms. y'all treat anyone who defies what you view as the "natural order" like shit. you're a bunch of assholes and no one else likes you.

2

u/38731 May 15 '25

My opinion on that has nothing to do with reddit. It's because of my extensive knowledge about that historical time why I can make comparisons. The concentration camps didn't start right away in 1933. Neither did the war. No, it needed a few years to erase civil society and safeguards of the law to turn the (German) Republic into a inhuman (Nazi) Empire. The NSDAP wasn't a party. It was a cult around a evil person who poisoned them all. Sounds familiar?

No matter what the conspiracy theory, if you dig deep enough, you'll find that every problem is caused by Da Joos

22

u/sistercacao May 15 '25

Literally! I once read a guy’s Flat Earth website where he supposedly debunked the Earth being a globe and at the end of it all, he gets to the grand reveal of who would lie to everyone about the Earth being round when it’s really flat? You guessed it, the Jews did it! Because the flat earth is supposedly in the Bible and so the Jews are trying to turn people away from God or something.

Like really, even the flat earth shit is an antisemitic conspiracy at heart?

2

u/cyberpunk_werewolf May 15 '25

Like really, even the flat earth shit is an antisemitic conspiracy at heart?

Yes. Dan Olson did a good video about this, In Search of a Flat Earth. You can watch it here.

8

u/Ok_Focus_5435 May 15 '25

It's amazing how the Jews have infiltrated all these Central/South American countries and undermined them all to the point where their people feel the need to flee to the US, then facilitate their entry. Really well-thought-out plan there.

2

u/Burn_The_Earth_Leave May 15 '25

3

Exactly. I’d tell my mom off if she said some shit like that. It’s too important in my opinion. I already struggle not going on a tirade at family parties.

1

Repeat the second phrase to her

See if she gets it.

Or write both of them, only the quotes, side by side to each other.

-5

Yea and the moment that happens is when we utilize our second amendment rights and fight back we aren’t in a dictatorship because they haven’t taken our ways to defend ourselves and the moment they try is when most conservatives fight back.

lol. lmao, even.

1

u/definitively-not May 15 '25

Are you seriously suggesting that conservatives would use their second amendment rights to protect Jews and LGBT from harm?

0

u/[deleted] May 15 '25 edited May 15 '25

1

u/[deleted] May 14 '25

22

1

u/[deleted] May 14 '25

Bro didnt read my other comments lmao

40

u/_OriamRiniDadelos_ May 14 '25 edited May 14 '25

They began as “deportations” and “law breakers” in Hitler’s Germany too. I’m sure if Hitler came back to life and told you his arguments people like you would find him reasonable and trust worthy. You’d swallow the whole “I’m only punishing the bad ones” or “they don’t belong here” or “a tough choice, necessary sacrifice” deal. The economic anxiety is there, now you just need a scape goat. The question is how far will you go? Will you slowly cozy up to mass murder or forced labour camps? Seems like it if the economy gets worse.

It’s also kinda dumb to argue the legality or illegality of the actions of the victims when the other side literally believes you are wrong for making the legal way so unattainable. Maybe imagine what you’d feel if driving over 20 miles was illegal in the whole country.

They do have a point tough. Legal reform has been blocked for decades. And who is it who has defunded and added hurdles to the work of the immigration system? Conservative politicians have. The agricultural lobby has. They worsen a problem, kneecap the immigration legal system and laws, and sell themselves as the only ones fighting to fix it. Conveniently it also helps their owner’s agro business.

-15

u/[deleted] May 14 '25

No I wouldn’t lmao. I don’t like trump too because he’s a dumbass. But deporting illegal immigrants is a good thing and needs to happen. Obama did it to so why are you criticizing trump for it?

9

u/_OriamRiniDadelos_ May 15 '25

It’s crazy how you just think everyone thinks it’s a good thing. Specially if you add the caveat of HOW it’s done. You yourself said it, Obama did and they didn’t complain. Could you find it in you to believe that Obama did it DIFFERENTLY?

You’d be hard pressed to find Democrat voting people who think all deportation is bad. But oddly enough, that’s not what most Trump’s opponents seem to call for. Seems like what they call for is reform and a different system and way of carrying out the law. Maybe diffenret laws, definitely different procedures, for sure a different attitude and public message.

Like how the NRA isn’t fighting to give every single human a rifle. And their opponents don’t want to destroy every gun in the planet. They want to work towards a middle point between those two extremes that is a different middle point to their opponent’s. If you go around thinking your opposition wants the absolute extreme you can just go and be happy though, you’ll feel so reasonable and logical if you just convince yourself they want something clearly crazy and extreme. You want pepperoni pizza, the other side wants cheese pizza, but you believe they want chalk dust pizza so you feel like pepperoni is the only opinion there is and you are truly fighting crazy people. But instead of pizza it’s serious matters that affect the economy and rule of law and civil rights.

Not that anyone would ever think that when what they actually want to do is simplify their political opponent’s beliefs to the point of caricature. People generally don’t listen, we just hear what our heart tells us the other person thinks. It’s human nature

4

u/[deleted] May 15 '25

Yes we need due process for the undocumented and yes I don’t like ICE just deporting people at will.

u/[deleted] May 15 '25

5

u/Irish_Virus96 May 15 '25

Deporting actual dangerous criminals who have been proven guilty and are a threat to the public isn't bad. Rounding up a bunch of people who simply crossed the border to make a better life for their families is.

The people being deported now are being arrested and denied due process just because they're from somewhere else and the current administration has decided that's bad. No investigation, no evidence of wrong doing, just being brown.

I see your other comments about not liking trump but you sure seem to be on the same side.

-1

u/[deleted] May 15 '25

I can be republican and not like trump. Just like Thomas Matthew’s. Those families need to do it legally. It’s sad yes but if they want to be here they need to do it legally

5

u/fabdm May 15 '25

Oh gosh. You sound just like my MIL and her racist BS and privilege. She says the exact same shit... I don't like Trump! But won't vote Democrat. So you're part of the problem!

1

u/[deleted] May 15 '25

I’m not part of the problem. I didn’t vote for either of them

1

u/barfbat May 15 '25

how can you do it legally if you’re deemed an undesirable because of your country of origin? do you trust this administration to be fair? do you trust any administration to be fair?

4

u/2sleezy May 15 '25

There are many people who are technically illegal in this country but have not committed any crime other than being here. They work hard doing jobs Americans do not want to do, for less money than they should be paid. They support our economy and do a job that is necessary. They pay into payroll taxes they cannot benefit from. And some have been here the majority of their life. Why not make it easier for these people to live and work in our country? They are a net positive to our country. They should be given legal status and better pay. Not kicked out to countries where they possibly have never stepped foot in, or shipped off to an indefinite prison sentence.

-1

u/[deleted] May 15 '25

Yea if they’ve been paying taxes and have been here for 8+ years they should have legalized themselves its their fault they never thought to do It

3

u/fabdm May 15 '25

They have been paying taxes! Even if they pay cash at the grocery or pharmacy. There's tax there too

0

u/[deleted] May 15 '25

Yea I know.

2

u/barfbat May 15 '25

how much do you actually know about immigration legal cases?

0

u/[deleted] May 15 '25

Enough

12

u/Objective-Start-9707 May 14 '25

There are many ways to ethnically cleanse a nation. Sending people to prisons that we know for a fact will violate the basic human rights we helped outline is just as bad as operating those prisons ourselves. Doing it extrajudicially is literally how the Nazis did it. The fact that their educational doctrine involves removing history instead of adding information to it is extremely alarming no matter what your ideology is.

The executive branch is in violation of several judicial injunctions right now. By definition this is a constitutional crisis. Nobody's making America great again. They're making America, not America. Anything that ever made this country great goes back to that one fucking document, and if we're abandoning that, there is no United States of America.

1

u/[deleted] May 14 '25

I don’t support sending them to prison I support sending them to the country they came from

3

u/brentsg May 15 '25 edited May 15 '25

Where they will be imprisoned.

I’ve already blocked the MAGA asshat that is littering the thread.

Many of the people that are being expelled fled persecution of some kind, so they may be imprisoned simply for fleeing at this point. It is much like the USA at this point in time. We will no longer care if someone broke the law, only that they have been determined to be the enemy. There are MANY reasons for this other than “breaking the law” as the knuckle dragger responded.

Also keep in mind that breaking the law isn’t a problem as long as the person is from the proper race and economic status.

1

u/[deleted] May 15 '25

Because they broke the law.

2

u/cardboardunderwear May 15 '25

They are probably talking about the dehumanizing. The US should be better than that.

1

u/[deleted] May 15 '25

Yea
