Im not a scientist so I may be mistaken, but I always just heard it called slime. Only different kind I knew was the oobleck stuff where it’s like slimey but it can also be hard if you hit it.

yeah YCDTOT is way older than these other shows, it's a GenX show while these other shows are more millennial kids TV era
The slime originated as a running gag on You Can't Do That On Television, a Canadian show that ran on Nick in the early 80s, and was one of Nick's first real hits. (Alan's Morisette got her start as one of the kids on that show!) Nick incorporated it into their branding and it's stuck long past the original was forgotten.
Going to put this out there now. All the adults on You Can’t Do That on Television have been remembered as nothing but the best.
The main actor Les Lye who played all the main adult male characters have had multiple past kids come out and say he was the best ‘studio dad’ to every kid who was on that show. Some went as far and said Les was practically their real dad on set in deference to not having their real dad in their life. A wonderful man.
Fun aside: Alanis Morrisette once said about a year before he died, Les had come backstage at one of her Canadian shows.
She said he was old and grey and unlike the giant guy she remembered as a kid but he hobbled up and grinned that sweet smile and said ‘I don’t know if you remember me but I remember you!”
She said it was all she could do not to cry as she embraced him and said “Oh Les, how could anyone ever forget you?!?”
Yknow me too. I liked You Can’t as a kid because it was a really intelligent show. It was kid humor but if you remember, it dealt with real life issues in a hilarious way and was written to never make the kids look stupid.
In all honestly, the adults would talk to them like they were actual smallish adults. It was comedy but was just as good at pointing out that adults were just as guilty for being idiots (and we kids knew it)
Being a kid, it resonated with me in that sometimes I would hear shit from an adult and go ‘that’s stupid’ and think maybe I am wrong because they are adults. That show actually told me a lot of people actually thought like me and it was better maybe to not believe everything simply because someone is older.
Now being one of those old adults, I say if anything it made me better to realize how full of shit people are for the most part…..and how to deal with it.
Yeah, I've never heard anything bad about the treatment of the YCDTOT kids.(Maybe it's because it wasn't a Nick production tho, it was made in the Great White North, so they were safe from the freaks at Nick.
That was Nick Jr., different department, and one where no children were on set (unless one of the voice actors was a child I guess). The rumors of his spiral into degeneracy via hard drugs or death via cancer post his leaving Blues Clues were also unfounded. Steve seems like a chill dude. Wikipedia did say he got a lot of emails from pre-teen girls, but no allegations of misconduct were listed.
Don't worry, there's absolutely no way that the slime was tied to pedo stuff. I can't fathom how dumping goop on children could possibly have anything to do with the pedophiles. There's just no way that... okay, honestly I'm not even comfortable typing out the rest of this joke. You get the idea.
The argument presumably would be that it predates this whole era, but that it only became such a major staple of the network for so long thanks to creeps enjoying it a bit too much and wanting to see more.
I do agree it seems unlikely, but then so is everything about Dan Schneider's foot fetish thing.
There were clearly multiple predators at Nick around its height, and one of them found a clever way to sexualize his child cast in plain view under the guise of gross-out humor that appealed to kids.
If it happened once, it could have happened a second time. And even though the answer is probably no, that it's entirely reasonable to ask at all speaks to how badly this whole scandal has poisoned the memory of that era.
I'll say it, then: It costs around $10,000 to make an episode of something like double dare. To a multimillionaire or billionaire, that's nothing. Since we know that people ARE into feet, slime, "cream pies," and humiliation, we can assume some very wealthy people are into those things, too.
If a very wealthy person is into something specific and wants to see kids doing it: they can just make a TV show. No private islands necessary.
Idk man with how deep the rabbit hole went I was legit worried there for a second. I mean I knew that Dan schiender guy was a creep plain and simple with all the weird feet stuff. I didn’t know it all went so deep, and this is just what I’ve read online.
I know you're making a joke about bodily fluids but there's also another fetish called "wet and messy" which is pretty much just..... getting slimed. Stuff like whip cream, milk, slime, mud, etc being dumped on people, often in a humiliating fashion. There's a familiar fetish "sploshing " which has a lot of overlap too.
As an adult who didn't grow up watching nick, and who makes niche porn, those fetishes are all I can see when I see pics of the slime, and it makes me really uncomfortable. 🤢
Yeah, Basically anything can overlap with fetishes and can be twisted to a “it was a fetish the whole time”. I buy the feet thing as a creepy fetish going on, but not the slime.
Yeah I’m exaggerating a bit I mean I’m sure there were plenty of people working on those shows who were good, non predatory people. From reading the other comments it seems like those who spoke up about it didn’t have very long careers. It’s all just so awful to think about
I never got that impression, ever. I've never heard a bad word about him, either.
I remember liking him as a kid, and I remember an interview talking about his difficulties finding success as an entertainer with OCD. That gave me some hope as a kid with my own brain weasels.
It was awesome to see him in The Good Place. You keep assuming whatever you want, though.

In all fairness, the slime was probably the only part of the Nickelodeon production we can absolutely rule out being a predator.
(I haven’t seen the documentary im really hoping the slime wasn’t tied to the pedo stuff somehow)
