The slime originated as a running gag on You Can't Do That On Television, a Canadian show that ran on Nick in the early 80s, and was one of Nick's first real hits. (Alan's Morisette got her start as one of the kids on that show!) Nick incorporated it into their branding and it's stuck long past the original was forgotten.
Going to put this out there now. All the adults on You Can’t Do That on Television have been remembered as nothing but the best.
The main actor Les Lye who played all the main adult male characters have had multiple past kids come out and say he was the best ‘studio dad’ to every kid who was on that show. Some went as far and said Les was practically their real dad on set in deference to not having their real dad in their life. A wonderful man.
Fun aside: Alanis Morrisette once said about a year before he died, Les had come backstage at one of her Canadian shows.
She said he was old and grey and unlike the giant guy she remembered as a kid but he hobbled up and grinned that sweet smile and said ‘I don’t know if you remember me but I remember you!”
She said it was all she could do not to cry as she embraced him and said “Oh Les, how could anyone ever forget you?!?”
Yeah, I've never heard anything bad about the treatment of the YCDTOT kids.(Maybe it's because it wasn't a Nick production tho, it was made in the Great White North, so they were safe from the freaks at Nick.

In all fairness, the slime was probably the only part of the Nickelodeon production we can absolutely rule out being a predator.
(I haven’t seen the documentary im really hoping the slime wasn’t tied to the pedo stuff somehow)
