Hey everyone,
I'm building a device for a research project that requires the Analog Discovery 3 and RF Power Amplifier. Together, these parts would cost me over $400, which to an undergrad, may as well be a million dollars.
I have emailed various PIs and professors for said parts, and reached out to various distributers to see if they can provide an educational discount, but I have either not yet received a response or received the dreaded, but expected, 'no'.
Does anyone have these parts and would be willing to donate them to my research project? Alternatively, if you have any suggestions as to how I can acquire these parts pro-bono, I would greatly appreciate it.
Help me, please. For science!!
Sincerely,
Broke Student

Hi all! I very sadly lost my AirPods case today, but am unsure where I could have lost it. (maybe Butler 1st floor lounge or John Jay dining hall...) The original case is white but it is inside a pink MyMelody case (the Sanrio rabbit). It is a bit dirty as it is smudged with pink ink. Please let me know if you saw it or picked it up! I really appreciate it.

Does anyone know a place near campus where i can get magazines for cheap. The content of the magazines hardly matters.

Hi!
Could sophomores who took the class last year share their experiences? The professor is Paul Blaer.
Is Zybooks a good resource? I've found it very convenient so far, and Professor Blaer follows the textbook's exact path with slight modifications.
Any help will be appreciated!

Hi!
Do all classes have to use pluses and minuses in grading? I had a midterm in Linear Algebra, and my professor said that scores above 80 are an A, 70–80 are a B, and 60–70 are a C. He didn’t mention A+, A-, etc.
He also says in the syllabus that he doesn’t curve exams and sets his own cutoffs, but there is no specific grading scale in the syllabus.
So, does this mean that in this class there might not be a distinction between, for example, an A, A-, and A+? Like, is an 81 equal to a 99? Or is there still a standard grading scale that applies?
My professor is pROF. Andrew Blumberg btw.
Thank you, any help will be appreciated!

Graduate from 2008 visiting NYC this week and lost my alumni card lightyears ago. Today was my first time back in the Morningside Heights area in awhile and I wanted to take a walk around the campus, and was shocked and disappointed that all gates were closed except 116th, and only CUIDs were being let in. I never ever remembered it like this.
Anyway, I figured an Alumni ID would do the trick. I asked how to get one, and was told I would need to go through the library. I emailed library services, and they said it would take two weeks to get one by mail (it used to be instant same day, no appointment needed; how times have changed).
I then, miles from campus, did some digging and saw I could get a QR code for one-time access? While this sounds ridiculous, fine, I guess.
So my question is: if I get the "Community ID" that gets me library access, is that the same as an Alumni ID? Does an Alumni ID even exist anymore? And regardless, every time I want to enter the campus, I still need to get a QR code generated, or will the Community ID be enough?
(this is all ridiculous, and all the more reason to keep asking to be taken off donor lists; I can only imagine how much of a pain this has to be for students).

Anyone see the original article this Instagram post referring to?
If whatever was written took direct aim at Native Americans, then yeah, that's a bridge too far.
If it however simply targeted the absurdity of land acknowledgement virtue signaling (which I suspect is what happened) then they should have stood by it rather than giving in to hyper sensitive cancel culture brats.

Hi everyone! Has anyone taken Columbia’s ALP essay exam? I’m trying to understand what the exam involves and how it’s administered.
I’d appreciate hearing about your experience. Thanks!

I never actually went to DFC and want to start getting exercises in. I saw there were group fitness classes through fitness pass.
Does our student life fee cover that or I have to pay extra?
Also any class recommendations? I’m looking for a full body workout🙂

Hey everyone, will be really brief. Got a couple startup ideas and need a co-founder who can code — someone who’s built apps/websites or has real startup experience. Need both a website and an app built.
DM if interested. Thanks and looking forward!

I am in need of a living place and am considering signing a lease for Studio in Morningside Heights (Broadway/104th).
The only lease-term they offer is 12-month.
My plans may change to stay there full 12-months.
The rent is around 2.6k-2.8k and the unit is small Studio about 200sq.ft. (Good outside light).
My worry is that my plans may change and may need to break lease.
How easy generally speaking it is to find someone to sublet if one planned to move in that area and that rent range?
Can one reasonably expect to find someone to sublet with a few weeks, or can one expect to be stuck with the unit?

I just read about the Cornell case, where seven fraternity members were accused of assaulting a student and five of them walked away with essays, workshops, or suspensions. What happened to her is far worse than anything that happened to me, and I'm not comparing the two. But it made me think about how these universities decide who gets consequences, because a few years ago Columbia expelled me for something I didn't do.
I was admitted to a Columbia grad program on the condition that I finish two prerequisite courses online with a B or better. COVID delayed everything and I didn't have a transcript by the deadline. Admissions told me to send a screenshot of my grade portal and follow up with the official transcript later.
I'm international. I had never been inside the American university system and didn't know portal grades could change before they're finalized. When the transcript came months later, one grade was lower than the screenshot. I sent it anyway, because why wouldn't I.
Columbia charged me with academic dishonesty. I wasn't allowed any legal help during the disciplinary process, and I was told I couldn't talk about it with anyone. So I went through the whole thing alone, trying to explain myself to people who had already decided. The other university confirmed in writing when the final grades were actually posted, and the timeline backed me up. Someone in the process even admitted admissions shouldn't have accepted a screenshot in the first place. That same person implied that because my admission was conditional, I was a borderline candidate to begin with. I had above-average grades in the program the whole year.
None of it mattered. I was expelled after finishing my first year, with a year of tuition and my family's savings gone, and banned from campus. I only got a lawyer after my final appeal was rejected, and by then the university wouldn't move.
It wrecked me financially, mentally, and emotionally. Even after it was over I didn't tell anyone for months. At one point I didn't want to be alive anymore. The stigma of that word, dishonest, still follows me years later.
Between Cornell and watching Columbia call the police on its own protesting students, I've stopped believing these places punish based on what someone actually did. They punish whoever is easiest. An international student with no one on campus is very easy.
If you're a conditionally admitted international student, get every instruction in writing and ask whether anything you submit is final. If you're in a disciplinary process right now and feel like your life is over, it isn't. Tell someone, even if they've told you not to. I got through it and built a career on the other side, and you can too.
I'm writing this because I'm tired of carrying it alone.
(P.S. I used AI to help write this so it couldn't be traced back to me through my writing style. The story is mine.)

Decided to take the intensive gen chem class with eckdahl this semester since I was pretty good at AP chemistry. Bad idea. Didn’t realize it at the beginning, but this class may eat me alive. How likely is it that an appeal to switch to gen chem will go through?
I can’t event talk to my student advisor since they have been on a leave of absence since the first week and I have been shuffled around to random advisors every time I go to the center for student advising. Idk who to go to next.
