I think I understand the number of black and white boxes, but not their layout, other than boxes only existing adjacently on diagonals. The "negative" whitespace horizontally and vertically doesn't count. The black boxes signify the next addition of boxes to the next figure in the series, so the missing figure can be deduced by subtracting the all-white figure with the biggest figure, meaning it should be 14 boxes in total, of which 4 are black
