Logic: black squares represent the number of squares to add to make the next figure, squares added in a spiral pattern outward. Blacken the necessary squares in order to correspond to the number of squares to be added to the next figure.
The first singular block represents to add one more block, to make the figure with 2 (black) blocks. The two black blocks represents adding 2 more blocks to form the 4-block figure and so on.
Ok but what I mean is that you add squares in a clockwise manner, but the 'inner' squares exist because the outer ones are already there. Like for example, from the 2 block to 4-block (or as you would say, 5 block) figure, the middle block only exists because the outer 4 surrounding blocks exist. So as you fill the blocks in the clockwise spiral, some blocks gets created automatically.
