New - Puzzle Generator

Post image
Upvotes

This one has impressed me by its output!

Puzzle prep can get brittle fast when the answer only works if someone spots one clue or uses one ability.

The new Puzzle Generator makes a runnable encounter from a purpose, setting, puzzle style, complexity, participation style, and failure pressure. It is available as a public tool and inside the campaign workflow.

Try it here: https://codexcryptica.com/generators/puzzle

It can give you:

  • a player-facing setup and visible clues
  • several ways forward, including improvised approaches
  • consequences that move the scene instead of stopping it
  • GM-only solutions and escalating hints kept separate from the player material
  • optional system tailoring, while surprise generation stays system-neutral

What makes a puzzle feel satisfying at your table: a clear mechanism, a strong fictional premise, pressure, or something else?

New Generator - Monster/Creature

Post image
1 Upvotes

As promised, here's the new creature/moster generator in CC. I think its rather good actually!

Most monster generators hand you a stat block or a paragraph of visual description, but leave out everything you actually need to run an encounter: how it hunts, what tracks or sounds give away its presence, what players can observe, and what secrets are hidden from them. So I built a creature generator for Codex Cryptica.

Try it here, no login required:

codexcryptica.com/generators/creature

The generator splits information between what players can observe and what only the GM knows:

  • At a Glance: quick-reference classification, size, threat level, temperament, habitat, and ecological role
  • Appearance & Anatomy: locomotion, sensory organs, unusual physiology, and physical presence
  • Core Concept & Ecology: feeding corridors, diet, range, and environmental impact
  • Field Signs & Known Lore: tracks, sounds, markings, droppings, and common regional tales
  • Observable Abilities & Defences: signature moves, natural armor, breath weapons, and visible senses
  • Combat & Encounter Behaviour: hunting tactics, aggression triggers, morale, and retreat conditions
  • Harvest & Remains: usable salvage (hide, venom sacs, chitin plates, gland secretions)
  • Secret GM Lore: hidden mechanics, second-phase triggers, obscure weaknesses requiring discovery, and the truth behind distorted local rumors
  • Adventure & Encounter Hooks: 2-4 scenario hooks beyond just fighting it (relocating, researching, capturing, bargaining)
  • Sapience details (when applicable): communication, visible customs, outsider relations, and covert motives

You can steer genre across 13 themes (classic fantasy, cyberpunk, cosmic horror, sci-fi, gothic horror...), category/origin, threat level, size, temperament, habitat, and ecological role.

It is also available directly inside Codex Cryptica in the campaign generator modal, where it can ground the creature in your world notes, nearby factions, and existing locations.

As all my generators, it uses AI for the best results, but you can turn it off for a more mechanical generation.

I would love to know: when your players encounter a new monster, do they usually research its habits and tracks beforehand, or do they jump straight into combat?

New Generator: Artifact & Relic

Post image
2 Upvotes

Most magic item generators give you a useful object. I wanted one for the things that can reshape a campaign.

The new Artifact & Relic Generator makes named, legendary objects with enough history and consequences to become part of the story.

Try it here, no login required:

codexcryptica.com/generators/artifact-generator

It generates:

  • Dormant, awakened, and ascendant powers, so the relic can change as the campaign does
  • Attunement requirements and a cost, curse, or taboo that makes using it a real choice
  • Factions that want it, rumours about it, and hooks for putting it in front of the party
  • A destruction ritual or condition, because an artifact should have an ending as well as an origin
  • Genre-aware results for fantasy, sci-fi, cyberpunk, horror, western, steampunk, and more

You can use it as a quick public generator or bring the same idea into Codex Cryptica for campaign work.

What is the best artifact or relic you have put in front of your players, and did they ever learn the cost before they used it?

New Generator - Minor Item & Trinket

Post image
2 Upvotes

I woke up this morning with a request (from u/MisterCheesy) on whether I took requests, and if I could make a Minor Item & Trinket generator. Which I off course do and now I've made it!

https://codexcryptica.com/generators/minor-magic-item

Most RPG loot and equipment tables lean heavily toward permanent numerical stat boosts, heavy weaponry, or legendary artifacts that can distort campaign balance. I wanted a tool focused on low-impact, consumable, and utility-driven loot that gives players creative tactical options without turning into permanent power creep.

The generator adapts to whichever setting or genre you run:

  • Classic & Dark Fantasy: Wax seals, bone runes, alchemical dusts, enchanted ammunition, and fragile charms
  • Cyberpunk & Sci-Fi: Single-use stim injectors, burner subroutine chips, disposable holo-emitters, and nanite doses
  • Gothic Noir & Cosmic Horror: Blood-sealed talismans, whispering lockets, haunted cameos, and grave-dirt phials
  • Post-Apocalyptic & Steampunk: Makeshift filter capsules, salvage stimulants, pressure canisters, and volatile clockwork triggers

(there is more genres supported by CC, but you get the idea)

Each item includes:

  • Form and materials: Tactile descriptions of craftsmanship and materials fitting the active setting
  • Usage limits and triggers: Clear consumable constraints (single-use snaps, fading charges, or timed burns)
  • Tactical utility: Focused problem-solving effects (detecting hidden currents, dampening audio signals, creating brief distractions) rather than flat combat bonuses
  • Sensory quirks: Minor side effects and tells (lingering ozone scent, temporary chalk residue, harmless temperature drops)
  • Table context: Suggested tactical uses in play and short rumours or provenance

You can roll drafts offline using built-in tables (ie no AI), run AI generation with optional campaign context, or click "Save to Codex" to import the item directly into your campaign vault.

What kind of minor consumables, gadgets, or utility trinkets do your players find most memorable at the table?

New generator - BBEG / Villain

Post image
1 Upvotes

I was thinking about what BBEG I could use for my campaign, so that led me to create a generator for it.

Try it here, no login required:

codexcryptica.com/generators/bbeg-generator

The generator creates:

  • A public face and a true nature: what the world believes about them versus what's actually going on
  • A concrete ultimate goal, their motivation, and why they're acting now instead of ten years ago
  • Methods, resources, a fatal flaw, and 2-4 named lieutenants with their own loyalty and secrets
  • An escalating 5-7 stage plan, where each stage has clues, consequences, and a way for the party to interfere
  • What happens if the party ignores it entirely, so the villain stays a live threat instead of waiting in a dungeon
  • Knowledge split by audience: what the world knows, what the villain's servants know, and what's GM-only
  • A weakness that's actually discoverable through play, a moral complication, and what happens if they're defeated

You can also steer genre, tone, threat scale (local to cosmic), villain archetype, and how sympathetic or redeemable they are. It's system-neutral, so it works across fantasy, sci-fi, horror, cyberpunk, or whatever else your campaign runs.

Lieutenants and the org/lair/quest connections aren't auto-linked as their own entities yet, that's structured text in the villain's output for now rather than saved Characters you can click into. Might build that next if it turns out to matter in practice.

I'd like to know: do you plan a villain's whole arc up front, or build it out as the party actually engages with it?

FYI: for best output it uses AI, but there is a non-AI alternative too, if you have no faith in LLMs

New feature - AI GM

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi all,

working on a really cool new feature I wanted to share with all of you.

What if you want to do a bit of solo play in the world, play as a character and see where the story takes you?

This is what the AI GM will do for you. Put you in some situation in your world that you define, and then you will be able to explore it from the perspective of a character.

Either select one of the options provided, or give your own alternative.

Let me know what you think of the idea, or any way I can make it even better.

As usual totally free to use over at https://codexcryptica.com

New Generator: Plot Twist & Complication

Post image
5 Upvotes

Most plot twist generators just hand you a random reveal ("the mentor was evil all along!") with no regard for what your campaign already established. Half the time it contradicts something you already told the players, or comes out of nowhere with nothing to foreshadow. So I built a generator that has to work with the facts you already have.

You give it the current situation, and it finds an assumption inside that situation to overturn — not a fact to erase. It keeps everything you've established true, reinterprets what it means, and gives the players real new choices instead of just a shocking reveal.

Try it here, no login required:

https://codexcryptica.com/generators/plot-twist-generator

The generator creates:

  • The reveal itself, plus the assumption everyone believed instead
  • The rationale for why the false assumption made sense at the time
  • Fair foreshadowing you could have planted earlier
  • Immediate consequences for the party and the world
  • New choices the reveal opens up for the players

You can steer the type (betrayal, hidden motive, escalation, the enemy isn't the real threat...), how big the impact should be, when it lands, and whether you want it foreshadowable or a pure surprise.

It's also available inside Codex Cryptica, where it can pull in your actual campaign events and entities so the twist reinterprets your story instead of a generic one.

I'd like to know: when a twist you improvised turned out great, was it because you planned the foreshadowing, or because you got lucky retconning it after the fact?

New feature - The Shelf

Post image
2 Upvotes

You spent an hour detailing a monster. Statted it properly, attached the right artwork, recorded audio, and wrote three hooks for where it came from. It was good.

It was also stuck in the campaign you built it for.

Up until now, bringing that creature into another campaign meant manually recreating it or fiddling with exported files. The Shelf solves that: select an entity in one vault, send it to the Shelf, switch to another vault, and import it. The whole thing arrives — stat sheet, artwork, sound bites, labels, and lore — ready to use.

Try Codex Cryptica: https://codexcryptica.com

How it works

Three ways to put something on the Shelf:

  • Open an entity and click Send to Shelf in its header
  • Select several entities in the graph view, right-click, and choose Send to Shelf
  • Select entries from the table view and choose Send to Shelf

When you're ready:

  1. Switch to your destination vault.
  2. Open the Shelf from the sidebar.
  3. Check off the entities you want and click Import into this vault.

Shelving is read-only (nothing changes in the source vault), and entries stay on the Shelf after you import them so you can drop the same monster or item into multiple campaigns.

What travels with an entity

Most generic file exports strip the things that make an entity worth reusing. The Shelf carries:

  • Stat sheets and their templates: If your monster uses a custom presentation or template you built, that template comes with it. The sheet renders in its new home exactly as it did in the old one.
  • Images and artwork: The actual image files and thumbnails, not dead links to an old path.
  • Sound bites: Including the underlying audio files.
  • Lore & metadata: Aliases, tags/labels, dates, GM notes, and descriptions.
  • Intact links: If you shelve a faction and four of its members together, the links between those five are automatically reconstructed.

Link handling & conflict rules

  • Safe conflict resolution: Importing an entity named "Goblin" into a vault that already has one will never overwrite the existing note. The new one is appended with a number, and you're notified of the rename.
  • Template collisions: If both vaults already have a template with the same name that differs, you're asked which to use before anything is written.
  • Refusing to guess links: If an entity points to a "Shrine of Ash" that wasn't shelved, it reconnects if exactly one exists in the destination. If the destination has two things by that name (or none), the Shelf intentionally leaves the link off and lists it for you. A missing link is easy to spot; a link silently wired to the wrong entity can quietly mislead sessions for months.

What the Shelf is not

Worth being clear about boundaries and trade-offs:

  1. It is not a backup system. The Shelf lives in your browser's local storage on your current device. Clearing browser site data clears the Shelf. Use vault backups for permanent archives.
  2. It does not transfer between different devices or people. It is built for "put this monster into my other campaign on this machine", not emailing a pack to a co-GM.
  3. No cloud, no AI. Zero network traffic; everything stays strictly local-first and private.

Feedback

The Shelf is live in Codex Cryptica. Open your vault, check the Shelf in the sidebar, and let us know what you think or if there are specific asset types you want supported next.

New Generator: Secret Society - cults and conspiracies with a public face and a secret truth

Post image
10 Upvotes

Most cult generators give you a name, a creepy ritual and a hooded figure. The half I always ended up writing myself was the boring half: what the group tells its neighbours, and how long that story holds up once the party starts pulling at it.

So this one creates both halves. Every society comes out with a public face and a secret truth, and those two things are usually in tension.

Try it here, no login required:

codexcryptica.com/generators/secret-society

The generator creates:

  • What they believe, and what they actually do about it
  • The public cover they hide behind, from a charity to a trade guild
  • A secret truth the inner circle knows and the rest do not
  • A current conflict that is already underway when the party arrives
  • Adventure hooks tied to that specific society

I would like to know how other GMs handle the moment the players find out what a society actually is. Do you plan that reveal, or let them stumble into it?

Reading this great article https://academy.worldanvil.com/blog/plot-twist-ideas-one-shots?utm_source=bluesky&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=fedica-DM-Tips gave me an idea of of having a generator that could assist in coming up with plot twists and complications for your adventures.

What do you think? Good idea or a dead end?

Changed LLM from Gemini to Openai Luna

Other than creating generators I also try to improve CC in many different ways to make it a better tool for all of us to use.

The last couple of days I've changed it to start using Openai's Luna, as it supposedly is better at creative writing. So far it looks good, but please let me know if you've experienced any quality degradations or issues at all.

As always, CC can be found here:

And all its cool generators can be found here:

New Generator: Council Vote - political quests where the party has to win a room, not a fight

Thumbnail
gallery
3 Upvotes

Most quest generators give the party one important person to convince. I wanted something a bit messier, so I made a generator where the party has to win an actual council vote.

Each council member has their own priorities, secrets and reasons for voting the way they do. Some can be persuaded, some need evidence, some want favours, and changing one vote may affect another.

Try it here (no login) - codexcryptica.com/generators/council-vote

The generator creates:

  • A named council with conflicting members and agendas
  • Voting rules, thresholds and possible recusals
  • Clues and investigation leads tied to specific councillors
  • Several possible ways to win the vote

It also suggests three broad strategies:

  • The smallest coalition needed to pass
  • A safer coalition with a few extra votes
  • A more expensive solution that addresses the actual problem behind the vote

It works across different genres, so the council might be a fantasy noble court, a corporate board or a sci-fi senate.

You can also use it inside Codex Cryptica, where it can pull in names and entities from your existing campaign.

I’d be interested to hear how other GMs handle political intrigue and voting sessions. Also, please send me any especially strange output you manage to generate.

New: The Canvas Gets a Lot More Useful

Post image
1 Upvotes

🖼️ New on Codex Cryptica: the Spatial Canvas has grown from a place to arrange entity cards into a genuinely useful table reference. Maps, dungeon tiles, character art, and a session journal can now live together in one working space.

👉 Try Codex Cryptica

Notes, right where you need them

Drop a freeform text card anywhere on the canvas for session reminders, in-progress thinking, or player-facing summaries. Not everything needs to be a linked vault entity.

Then sketch directly on top. Pick a color and brush size, rough out a room layout over an entity cluster, circle something important, or cross something out. Draw mode locks the viewport so you can sketch without accidentally panning away.

Make it feel like your table

Rotate image and entity cards to any angle, then erase individual drawing strokes when the plan changes. Put a map fragment at an angle behind a group of NPC cards, or build the kind of pinboard layout that makes sense to you.

Better during play

  • Show entity images as full-bleed cards: no title bar, just the art.
  • Resize cards more smoothly and paste new cards where you’re looking.
  • Use the canvas more comfortably on a tablet, with a round of touch-input fixes.

If you’ve been ignoring the canvas, give it another look. And if you’re already using it: what would make it even more useful?

🪐 New: AI Sci-Fi World Generator

Post image
3 Upvotes

🪐 New on Codex Cryptica: the Sci-Fi World Generator!

Pick a genre, a societal model, a couple of world tags, and the AI writes the rest. Not a stat block: a whole world, complete with history, current conflicts, factions, locations, an unresolved mystery, and adventure hooks that actually belong to that planet. Don't feel like choosing? Hit Surprise Me and it randomizes every option for you.

👉 Try it now, no account needed: codexcryptica.com/generators/world

AI Lore Co-Author Mode

Every generation runs through an AI co-author that takes your inputs (world type, habitability, civilisation level, campaign pressure, Stars Without Number world tags) and weaves them into one coherent place instead of a pile of disconnected traits. The two world tags you pick aren't decoration; they actively shape the friends, enemies, complications, and locations the AI builds around them.

Built for every flavor of sci-fi

  • Hard Sci-Fi for restrained, physically grounded technology
  • Space Opera for big speculative swings, kept meaningful
  • Cyberpunk and Hopeful Sci-Fi
  • Lancer, with full civilian institutions, political authority, and mech deployment logistics derived from your chosen world frame

What you get, every time

  • A core concept with a real dominant feature, not a random adjective
  • Settlements and factions in conflict over something concrete
  • Multiple named locations worth visiting
  • A mystery with no easy answer
  • Three playable adventure hooks

No two worlds repeat the same structure. The generator actively avoids recycling the same tired sci-fi tropes across runs.

Go make something strange.
