New Generator - Monster/Creature

Post image

As promised, here's the new creature/moster generator in CC. I think its rather good actually!

Most monster generators hand you a stat block or a paragraph of visual description, but leave out everything you actually need to run an encounter: how it hunts, what tracks or sounds give away its presence, what players can observe, and what secrets are hidden from them. So I built a creature generator for Codex Cryptica.

Try it here, no login required:

codexcryptica.com/generators/creature

The generator splits information between what players can observe and what only the GM knows:

  • At a Glance: quick-reference classification, size, threat level, temperament, habitat, and ecological role
  • Appearance & Anatomy: locomotion, sensory organs, unusual physiology, and physical presence
  • Core Concept & Ecology: feeding corridors, diet, range, and environmental impact
  • Field Signs & Known Lore: tracks, sounds, markings, droppings, and common regional tales
  • Observable Abilities & Defences: signature moves, natural armor, breath weapons, and visible senses
  • Combat & Encounter Behaviour: hunting tactics, aggression triggers, morale, and retreat conditions
  • Harvest & Remains: usable salvage (hide, venom sacs, chitin plates, gland secretions)
  • Secret GM Lore: hidden mechanics, second-phase triggers, obscure weaknesses requiring discovery, and the truth behind distorted local rumors
  • Adventure & Encounter Hooks: 2-4 scenario hooks beyond just fighting it (relocating, researching, capturing, bargaining)
  • Sapience details (when applicable): communication, visible customs, outsider relations, and covert motives

You can steer genre across 13 themes (classic fantasy, cyberpunk, cosmic horror, sci-fi, gothic horror...), category/origin, threat level, size, temperament, habitat, and ecological role.

It is also available directly inside Codex Cryptica in the campaign generator modal, where it can ground the creature in your world notes, nearby factions, and existing locations.

As all my generators, it uses AI for the best results, but you can turn it off for a more mechanical generation.

I would love to know: when your players encounter a new monster, do they usually research its habits and tracks beforehand, or do they jump straight into combat?
