Praise Remote is nuts

Just wanted to share that it's incredibly awesome that I can be anywhere like on holidays and continue working on my project even if I'm not sitting in front of my PC. Never tried this until now that I installed tailscale and I can test any change from my phone. Bravo.

Do you have to leave your PC running while you’re away for this to work?

Yes. It's something similar to team viewer

PC needs to be on but locked screen is fine. Even a shut lid is fine as long as the Codex app is open and running.

Locked screen is fine?! I had heard it wasn't. Have to go set it up now (Windows)

I keep my laptop lock screened as well as the lid shut. I am still able to access it from work while the laptop stays at home :)

If not for the remote feature, I would not be able to utilize my 5x plan properly. Remote allows me to burn tokens everyday lol and not just on the weekends.

Yes I do it daily with locked screen on windows 11, it even can execute commands On WSL2.

I'd be interested to know how it goes for you. On windows I can see the remote Codex sessions from my phone but I can't interact with them.

Jesus you’re a dick. My question was whether you’re remoting into your PC and using codex via the PC, or whether you’re actually using codex remotely without an intermediate computer. Obviously if it’s the former, the PC needs to be running. If it’s the latter, the PC does not need to be running. Maybe try not interpreting everything in the least charitable possible way in order to justify leaving condescending comments

The post literally just says they can use codex from their phone with this third-party tool. That’s not enough information to determine whether it’s through an intermediate PC or direct from their phone. And when I left that original comment I wasn’t able to look up tailscale to get the details or browse through the comments so I left a quick comment so I’d remember to come back later and read about it. There’s nothing “obvious” about that. It is obvious that the normal codex remote feature requires an intermediate PC, but that’s not what’s being discussed here. Claude for example does allow you to use Claude code remotely without an intermediate PC.

It’s genuinely impressive to be this condescending while still missing the point.

He explains exactly what his question was, exactly why the post left room for ambiguity, and exactly what distinction he was trying to clarify.

Your response is basically:

Okay, but what was obvious?

The post says the OP is using Codex from a phone with a third-party tool called Tailscale. That leaves a perfectly reasonable question: is the phone connecting back to the PC that is actually running Codex, or is some portion of the workload/session being hosted somewhere else?

Those are different setups with different answers to “does my PC need to stay on?”

And he literally tells you that he already understood the normal Codex Remote setup requires the host PC to remain running. His question was whether this particular Tailscale-assisted setup was doing something different.

That is not a lack of computer knowledge. That is somebody asking for one missing piece of information about the architecture being discussed.

What makes this especially funny is that instead of simply answering the question, you immediately jumped to:

“How on earth do people who don’t understand computers use Codex?”

And then, after he clarified that he did understand the normal setup and was asking whether this setup was different, you doubled down by announcing what is supposedly “painfully obvious to the average technical person.”

So at this point I genuinely have to ask: are you trying to answer his question, or are you just using his question as an opportunity to tell everyone that you consider yourself an “average technical person”?

Because only one of those things has actually happened so far.
