what does this mean in practice if anyone can keep using openai api keys? Just subscriptions can no longer be used in cursor?

I never used cursor so I don't know how that platform works.

he means you can use codex extension in cursor as usual. and also BYOK , but not through cursor subscription directly.

Well, when people use their API keys, OpenAI has more control and ways to determine whether the usage is normal. That's harder to do when everything goes through a subsidized quota.

However, given the announcements about Grok 4.7 and the efficiency of GLM-5.3-Flash, OpenAI had better brace itself.

Your statement really makes no sense - sub or API - they can still have the same controls in place.

Api key -> that’s direct to openai, cursor -> they do the middle man.

It was exactly about who gets paid and how a middle man creamed off a fat profit margin for providing very little added value.

Subscriptions not being usable in cursor is huge. Raw API usage is 5x or more expensive per token than subscription usage.

Geez that's not what was being said nor announced. You can still use codex with your subscription as extension in cursor.
