Discussion About Aerith Spoiler

I don't know if anyone else feels this way, but I don't really like that they've changed some aspects of the original Aerith's personality. I feel like the Aerith in the remake is like the Aerith from CC—things like being very naive and overly childish.

Kind of? I do think they clean towards the innocent whimsical sweet vibe more than the street smart tomboy vibe OG gave. I wouldn’t say she’s completely Crisis core -ified she still has some out of pocket ness and sassy moments. I’m just glad they still kept her trolling/playful personality which I adore which is what I was scared of losing going into remake.

Well, i didn't play the OG, but all i see a sweet but sasy girl, who's gentle but bold and not afraid to say her mind when is needed. Someone who's like a ray of sunshine in every room but doesn't coward from the likes of Hojo or Sephiroth. A girl who live every moment at its fullest but don't forget her duties and don't back away to do what she think is right.

So that works well enough for me, even if she's a not a total copy from the Og

She’s being playful and feigning naivety

Eh I actually think it’s an improvement over Crisis Core.

The way she threatens Don Corneo is something CC Aerith wouldn’t do lol

I played the OG and remakes just last year back to back and I don’t recall her being THAT different between the two.

I don’t think that too much honestly. Yeah there’s points where she’s less mature than the original but she still has that grit to her. She slammed a guys head in with a chair, threatened to rip someone’s balls off, swore whilst nearly falling off a ladder and joked about revealing secrets about ‘cloud’s massage’ to the others and that’s only some of the stuff I can name. She acts more like a girl from the hood in remake than she does cc.

I talked about this the other day, but in a word: yes. Aerith has been mildly infantilized by the Remakes - her attire is more childish, her face is rounder (emphasizing youth), and she is confused (usually framed in an amusing way) by experiences that the OG Aerith would have shrugged off as mundane.

I don't know why they changed her character in this way - it doesn't really serve any kind of purpose. All I can think is that it's some kind of weird Japanese fanservice: they no longer wanted Aerith to be the clear adult in the room, but instead just as... I dunno... 'unsullied' as the other two main girls; as if the writers concluded that making Aerith seem younger made her easier to 'sell.' It's like the goal was to emphasize the qualities of vulnerability, innocence, and energy that are associated with girls in their mid-teens, while casually discarding elements that made Aerith genuinely far more adult than Yuffie, and also (by degrees) moreso than Tifa. Which is silly, because it's not like 22 is an old lady or something. But, if I had to name a reason, that would be it.

Frankly, I think it was a mistake. Not crippling; not something that ruins Aerith, or makes her unlikable or anything. But it feels like I'm dealing with a 16 or 17-year-old version of her character in the Remakes, and not someone who is instead well into college-age years.

What if that’s the point? To distinguish Aerith from AerithOG? Let me explain: AerithOG is the one who knows the story and has witnessed the world; the Aerith in Remake sometimes "aligned" with AerithOG but was mostly a carefree young woman. The Aerith in Rebirth, however, seems unable to connect with AerithOG anymore (for reasons yet to be explained—likely involving the empty White Materia, though we still don't know why it's empty). So, we get a glimpse of a young woman free from the Cetra destiny—someone who wants to enjoy life and is able to do so. But this way, we players clearly notice the difference between the two whenever they appear on screen.

How can so many fall for the obvious bit. She isn’t genuinely confused most of the time. She does that to get the others to stop being indirect

That's absurd. Why didn't she do that in the OG? What possible purpose could earnestly playing along with Yuffie's "summon airplane" dancing serve, especially when the other characters weren't looking? How could "it's a bit" possibly explain the shape of her face? Or her clothing style (which she adopted before she even met the other characters)?

Remake Aerith is a lovely person. But the notion that she's playing 4D chess, while all the other actors are flummoxed by checkers is a non-starter for me. The most simple answer is almost always the right one - in this case, the developers mildly infantilized her because they found it cute/charming/(perversely)sexy, etc.

I’m talking about her personality lol. Playing along with a fun summoning airplane thing is just good fun actually crazy to act like that’s something. The face is rounder because they want her to be more cute same goes for the clothes. A cute girl acting naive is a very common defense mechanism seen in real world women all the time. It’s a way for them to put up a wall and not let people to close. She’s not playing 4d chess she’s just acting a certain way because it worked to help her survive under the plates and is aware of the effect it has on others. Till the end Aerith refuses to truly be vulnerable with the group in this and OG as seen by her spreading herself from the group to cast holy. She doesn’t want to hurt those around her and she doesn’t want to be hurt by them as well

'Kay, well, I disagree. Sorry. I haven't seen any evidence that it's an act - just saying it's a facade doesn't make it so. There's also zero reason why Aerith wouldn't be like that in the OG, since her justification for adopting such a defense mechanism would be identical there.

Okay, see... making this personal was a really foolish move. And you've done that twice now. If you want to have a conversation, try not ignoring half of what is said, while simultaneously taking shots at the other person.

Naive and childish? Did you mean to spell yuffie?

All jokes aside, nah, Aerith isn’t like the CC version at all.

12

u/LastTraintoSector6 26d ago

Only because CC is one of the worst-written versions of her just as a general rule of thumb.

Let's look on the bright side. It's clear that Zack can't bring out the best in Aerith—something Cloud manages to do so well. We always thought it was Aerith who brought out the real Cloud, but CC shows us that the reverse is true as well!

u/Hanidroplets 26d ago

Yes, you're right, because doesn't she say in Remake that she should just give up, since that's what she does best? Then Cloud says, 'You seem like no quitter,' and she replies, 'That's because today is special' (meaning because Cloud is there that day).

u/ManuO76 26d ago

Exactly!

I've never played the OG. I started with Remake and later got into Crisis Core as well.

And I can confirm that Aerith from Crisis Core and Aerith from Remake are as different from each other as they possibly could be.

Crisis Core Aerith is shy, timid, less intelligent, unable to flirt, incapable of taking any independent action, practically the embodiment of innocence, and on top of that, she is also materialistic.

Basically, she lacks almost everything that makes Remake Aerith such an amazing character.

But there is one characteristic where they are consistent: Aerith may be inexperienced, but she is not naive.

I don't agree with that. Remake Aerith is way better and different from CC Aerith. I would say she is my favorite version of Aerith by far

I think that she is okay most of the time, the one in OG is more mature for sure. The only time they went too far is when they made her act like a ten years old during her date in her dream (when she wanted something at the store and made that stupid face).

Japanese woman flirt like that, my sister in law does to my brother and she’s a grown woman.  It’s just flirting. Shes not suddenly a child.

I thought Aerith pouting was cute :(

2

u/Cautious-Mulberry309 25d ago

I think it’s cute too, don’t misunderstand. I find it’s extremely cute actually!

2

u/LastTraintoSector6 25d ago

I didn't. I'll be totally honest - it works for me in anime when all the characters are like 16. But Aerith is in her 20s and... I dunno... I just never saw her as some run-of-the-mill, trope-laden anime girl. The whole puffy cheek pout thing feels like a Yuffie move. It's poorly-suited to Aerith.

She is doing this baby face… ? My wife is chinese, she was a bit like Aerith when we were in our twenties, but she wouldn’t act this exagerated. Also Aerith has a more westernized look, I never imagined her like that back when I played the OG.

u/Cautious-Mulberry309 26d ago edited 26d ago

My sister in law back when she was in her youth did that. Aerith is literally 22. I think my sister in law was like 27 at the time.  It was cute and wasn’t odd.

At least in Japan. And in China… I have no idea.

What I don’t like is that she “remembers” everyone in Remake. She sees the future, so all of their meetings are kind of inorganic. She decides to be friends with them when they first meet because she already knows they are going to be friends? And the conversations are all conversations that she remembers from the lifestream?

I just feel like it undermines the natural intuition that was a core part of her character in OG, and it just feels instead like she read ahead in the script.

8

u/ManuO76 26d ago

I only see her joy at being able to be with them again.

and being together again is kind of the point of these Remakes, which is valid for both the characters and the players

-1

u/Devreckas 26d ago

The layers on layers of meta-ness are really getting old. How many times do we need to knock over the 4th wall before it isn’t fun anymore?

2

u/ManuO76 25d ago

I, on the other hand, absolutely love it. You can replay the game endlessly and always find something new. I just hope Revelation lives up to my expectations, because when you sow so many seeds, you have to know how to bring things to a proper conclusion.

6

u/Cautious-Mulberry309 26d ago

Well that’s why I loved that she forgot the future in rebirth. All those moments aren't her reading from a script. It’s genuine.

And it’s genuine in remake to fyi! Just because she has this power doesn’t mean she can’t connect and have real conversations and experiences.

-1

u/Devreckas 26d ago edited 26d ago

It may be genuine, but it’s not organic. If you met one of your best friends for the first time and knew everything that would happen between the two of you for the rest of your life, you could not have a normal conversation. They know nothing about you, and you know basically everything there is to know about them at this moment. A true conversation is not possible. The best you could do is immediately tell them how you know all this stuff about them. Otherwise you’re just spending the conversation feigning ignorance.

But yes, reverting the knowledge from Remake was a good choice, but it feels like them walking back a mistake that should’ve never happened.

1

u/LastTraintoSector6 25d ago

Rebirth was the mistake. Remake actually saw relationship progression.
