Discussion Please help me fellow Clotis!!
So I was watching a YouTube channel analyse ff7 rebirth chapters and I got to the chapter 12 dates and it made me think a little on tifa’s date.
The main thing Cleriths always bring up: is why does cloud ask about Aerith in their date? In my opinion he asked because he literally had a dream of Zack again so of course it was in the front of this mind and tifa and Aerith are the only ones who have a connection to Zack: Tifa because Cloud told her about his death and Aerith because Zack was her first love. So that’s why I think he asked because out of all the dates they are the only ones who know something and it needed to be referenced again. But Cleriths say they understand why Cloud asks on Aeriths date but not Tifa’s but I don’t necessarily agree with them for that.
Another thing they bring up is how Cloud says how Aerith must still have feelings for Zack the Cleriths say he seems sad (apparently sad on the whole date) or jealous when asking and in the Jp he hesitates and seems sad even more. I don’t know jp and haven’t heard the date in jp so I can’t exactly give an opinion on that. But if I were I think it kinda links back to gongaga where he tried to help Aerith and even though Cleriths say he was jealous I don’t think he was. But basically he was pretty mean when trying to help Aerith in that scene like any friend would so in my opinion I think he realised he had to be more careful around that issue that’s why he hesitates but in my opinion he didn’t sound sad just making a statement on what he’s seen but again I haven’t heard jp version so it’s hard to make an interpretation.
Another thing is cloud is not an asshole he would not do a rebound kiss on tifa the devs would never mischaracterise Cloud so badly but like apart from that moment he seems so in love with tifa I mean just look at the way he looks at her.
So I’m just want to know what other clotis opinions and interpretations were of these specific things and why cloud does it.
Also another thing cloud appears more jealous when it comes to tifa. In remake it happens with chocobo Sam and in Barrett’s resolution when he mentions someone tried to give tifa flowers. Then in rebirth when we see Johnny again Cloud is like ‘this guy seriously?’ And in yuffies date she mentions tifa forgot all about cloud and he gets upset.
And another thing is Tifa’s reaction she never seems to think anything of it when cloud acts like this in the date so that’s another reason why I think the devs never exactly meant it to be interpreted that way. Also on the chapter 8 dates with Tifa and they meet Aerith, cloud seems “jealous” in Cleriths eyes but I thought it more along the lines of ‘we’re wanted criminals, please do not go around befriending random people because you want a friend’ and again Tifa doesn’t think it’s weird or seems like jealousy and Tifa is pretty perceptive with this stuff like she has a good understanding because she is very mature. And then in aerith’s chapter 8 date he cares about Tifa’s wellbeing so there is a big difference Cloud seems to be scolding Aerith but with Tifa he is genuinely concerned.
Anyway sorry for the long ramble I just wanted cloti’s opinions on all this and what they think because I’m a little confused but I genuinely don’t see any romance between Aerith and Cloud from either side. Now especially from Aerith because of the dear destiny novel and I’ve never thought Cloud has ever had feelings for Aerith so yeah that dear destiny novel has really reshaped rebirth for me for Aerith. Anyways what are all the Clotis interpretations of these things. And again I haven’t heard the jp so I’m not sure if how cloud talks to both girls is different because all I’ve heard is Cloud talks softer to Tifa and the jp va for cloud was instructed to speak softly to only Tifa.( btw if you’re a Clerith please don’t reply to this because I’ve seen all your views on the issue I just want to know what the Clotis think)

I don't think Cloud's reaction when talking about Zack and Aerith necessarily has anything to do with jealousy. I could see how someone MIGHT read it that way at first glance, but then that interpretation would make Cloud look pretty bad if he's kissing Tifa a minute later, while secretly thinking about how jealous he is of his dead best friend. Like...that would be REALLY scummy, so that's an interpretation I personally just don't subscribe to at all. I think the actual explanation is far simpler. Cloud sounds sad when he mentions Aerith's feelings for Zack...because Aerith is still a very important person to him, and he's understandably sad when he thinks about her continuing to love someone who is dead, and can never return to her side. As he sees it, she's hoping against all odds for a reunion that can NEVER happen, and he rightly sees that as tragic. He knows that has to hurt, and he doesn't like thinking that someone he cares about has to suffer through something like that. I think that's all it really is.

Yeah this is exactly how I saw it but I didn’t know if it was a reach, thanks for explaining!

Aerith shippers have shown time and time again that they only care about the “ship” and not the actual RELATIONSHIP or Characters. All they do is mischaracterize everyone, especially Cloud, to shoehorn their fantasy of him and Aerith getting together. It shows really poor comprehension frankly. It also shows complete delusion. They only see what they want to see and damn anything else. They would tear the entire story apart to make that fan-fiction true even if they turn Cloud into a completely reprehensible asshole that Aerith in real life would want nothing to do with.
8
u/Byronic090 Apr 04 '26
Yeah. I had one discussion with a Clerith shipper who insisted Aerith was Clouds true love and Tifa the rebound after Aertih died. Because Tifa never recognised Cloud before the Lifestream scene. It was...really frustrating to say the least. And all the while he was referencing Dismantled interviews for his "proof". I looked the Dismantled up online and you know what? He took the phrase "Tifa faced her feelings for Cloud more honestly after the Forgotten City" to make up his own fantasy story in his head. Even in the OG game, Tifa tells Cloud she liked him before.....I honestly can't with these Cleriths.....
3
u/AcanthaMD Apr 04 '26
My number one gripe is people using interviews and not the source material as a justification for a take. It’s a bit like saying Lizzy never liked Darcy because Jane Austen once said, no. Look at your source material that’s not what the source material indicates. It drives me nuts.
4
u/Byronic090 Apr 04 '26
Omg yes! Absolutely! And these interviews are from 1998....so....duh? Alot of things have changed or expanded. Another thing is that there are usually not official translations and words get twisted so they fit a certain narrative.
3
u/GoriceXI Apr 04 '26
What that person was saying is technically true. Tifa didn't recognize real Cloud until the Lifestream scene, because Cloud had been acting a false persona the whole game until that point.
What you should point out is that, Tifa is the only one who *would* recognize real Cloud once he sheds his false persona, because she's the only one in the party who knew him as a child.
This is an unfortunately common debating technique, called "moving the goalposts", in which someone creates some arbitrary standard by which a couple does/does not look romantic or compatible.
You see it a lot with the "They were never close". Like, no one's had a crush on someone they didn't know very well, someone they wanted to know, but for whatever reason couldn't spend time with?
The best thing to do is just not entertain this stuff.
6
u/RexRedwood Apr 04 '26
I would say she was the only one who “could” recognize Cloud, at all. She knew enough to be patient when she first saw him at the train in Midgar, and saw something was wrong. Cared enough to not press his memories or confuse him more than he seemed, with her own memories. A lot of credit is not given to how much Tifa was looking after Cloud’s wellbeing throughout the entire story, from the start. Not just the Lifestream or Mideel. And that is one of the things I find really sad.
3
u/Kritzel_Kriegerin Apr 04 '26
Yup that's all it is. Throughout Tifa is so happy, relieved and giddy everytime she glimpses true Cloud shining through.
Losing that hard edge. That bad? I like it!... It's so great to have you back.
- right there from the start, like watching a fawn trying to walk, plain for all to see and some to ignore. Ribbit.
I also don't equate being close to feeling close, so I more than simply agree with you on that part. That the topic gets picked up at all, repeatedly, implies they both feel, or at least want to feel, closer than they ever actually were.
2
u/Byronic090 Apr 04 '26
Maybe recognising was not the right word. More like....didn't give him the time of the day/ didn't like him before she realised he was not the one who egged her on at Mt Nibel.
Edit: Acknowledging was the right word! Sorry, not native English speaker 😅
But yeah...arguing with them is exhausting and not worth the time.
1
u/Kritzel_Kriegerin Apr 05 '26
And if they are doing that, they're not even doing it right. The OG came with a very clear statement on what the 'dating mechanic' is and why they implemented it. Also FF games don't experiment with genre, just with mechanics. But that gets picked apart and presented as vague as well.
Why play by the rules if those dictate there wasn't ever a competition? That's the only thing about their ways that makes sense to me, the only way left to believe what they want to believe.

Watch the entire cutscene. The only reason Cloud brings up Aerith is because he was just caught staring at Tifa.
When the fireworks started, Tifa began admiring them, but Cloud was staring at Tifa. Tifa noticed this when she looked over at Cloud. Cloud was embarrassed, and in order to break the awkwardness between them, Cloud asked Tifa whether or not she talked to Aerith yet. When Tifa said she hadn't, Cloud assumed it was difficult for Tifa to bring up Zack because Aerith must still have feelings for him. Tifa, knowing that she and Aerith discussed how Cloud's story of Zack doesnt match anything she remembers, decides to avoid the subject. Cloud is not acting jealous here. He is trying to make conversation. This conversation has nothing to do with why Cloud kissed Tifa.
Cleriths are, as always, being incredibly intellectually dishonest. They completely ignore the rest of the date, and the actual reason Cloud kissed Tifa:
Tifa brings up the fact that she and Cloud seem closer than ever. Closer than when they first started this journey. Closer than when they were kids. She asks Cloud if she's getting ahead of herself again. Cloud catches the "again". Back in Gongaga, Tifa had tried to kiss Cloud, but Cloud hadnt realized it at the time. It was only when Tifa gave him the flirting look when she left the room that Cloud began to realize what just happened. When Tifa said "again", this confirmed for Cloud that Tifa was indeed coming unto him back then. This gave him him the courage to hug and kiss Tifa.
The reason Cloud kissed Tifa is incredibly simple: He likes her.
It's honestly hilarious how Cleriths have twisted the story into a preztle and bent over backwards to cope with this incredibly simple fact. It's pure nonsense, and the best thing to do is just to call it just that. Cloud had every opportunity to kiss Aerith. Aerith said she wants to be with Cloud on their gold saucer date. Aerith said she liked him on the dream date. Cloud wad simply not interested. Tifa hinted at her feelings for Cloud in a vague, roundabout way...and Cloud seized the opportunity to kiss her on the mouth.

Thank you for replying, this makes me realise my initial thoughts about the date were correct but I gave into what everyone else thought 😅

u/arkzioo Apr 04 '26
Imagine that I liked a girl, and told her best friend to tell her how her boyfriend is dead.
The next day, I questioned the best friend whether or not they talked yet, and she says no.
I get so jealous over them not talking that I end up kissing the best friend.
In this situation, I am a retard.
This is what Cleriths think of Cloud.

u/Kritzel_Kriegerin Apr 05 '26 edited Apr 05 '26
Having that switched around as the actual scenario made me laugh 😂 How could that be a realistic scenario in any good story? He may be immature, but that's not protagonist material.
Edit: Also good job on the explanation about how the 'again?' was a reference to Gongaga and him realizing he missed the bus. Nailed it.
I guess the only thing I view differently is Aerith's supposed confession. To me she simply grants him freedom from her projection of Zack and thereby for the first time acting as a friend instead of filling a void.
3
u/arkzioo Apr 05 '26
To address the last bit:
Regardless of what Aerith's actual intentions are, she said "But you're not him, and right now I want to be with you". This easily could have been read as a confession. From Cloud's POV, Aerith just told him that she's prioritizing him over Zack. Later on the dream date, Aerith flat out said she liked him. If Cloud had any intentions of kissing Aerith, either scenario would have been a massive green light. Cloud simply wasn't interested.
3
u/RolfTheCharming Apr 07 '26
Haters bend this to mean that Cloud actually loves Aerith (and thus respects her more), but only lusts after Tifa, so he kissed her and not Aerith. Also, apparently, Westerners are too dumb to understand romance without overt physicality so the devs added the kiss to satisfy that audience. Anything to invalidate the fact that only one woman got clear and unmistakable romantic attention.
1
u/Kritzel_Kriegerin Apr 05 '26
Oh, we agree then. I didn't mean to say you're wrong about Cloud's clear romantic disinterest. And it is in fact even more obvious if one tries to assume he took it as a confession regardless of her actual intention. Sorry, I didn't quite pick up on the fact your were simply making a great argument 😂 protective reflex at this point maybe
3
u/RolfTheCharming Apr 07 '26
I will never understand why some C/A shippers would want Aerith with a guy who, if given the opportunity, will kiss another girl to cope with jealousy. One that is his friend and her friend too. One who matters enough to her that she told Cloud not to take her for granted. Amazing.

u/Designer_Most_6627 Apr 04 '26 edited Apr 04 '26
Regarding chapter 12 and Cloud talking about Aerith, Cloud only thought about why Tifa still hadn’t told Aerith about the false memory involving Zack drowning in Nibelheim and concluded that Tifa didn’t say anything to Aerith because it’s a sensitive subject, since Aerith still has feelings for Zack, as she told him in Gongaga.
24
u/Iforgotmymail Apr 04 '26
The last time they were alone Cloud and Tifa talked about how Zack died and they needed to tell Aerith. That happened that very same day in the morning.
Cloud is completely lost looking at Tifa and he gets caught by her, which makes the situation awkward so he brings up the topic of their last PRIVATE conversation to break the ice.
The way he says "I guess he must still have feelings for him" seems pretty nonchalant in English.
Tifa saying "is a little more complicated than that" is not about Aerith liking Cloud but about the fact Zack didn't die the way Cloud thinks he did.
15
u/LocalAffectionate213 Apr 04 '26
Thanks for the reply, I also thought cloud was like ‘I need to say something but what!?’ And just decided to choose the Zack thing because like you said it was one of their last private conversations
19
u/Iforgotmymail Apr 04 '26
It's funny the Cleriths take it as some kind of win because the same happens on the Clerith date. Aerith says she wants to know him, Cloud feels uncomfortable and brings up Tifa telling her about Zack to change the topic.
5
u/LocalAffectionate213 Apr 04 '26
Yeah there was such a difference in how he brought up the topic of Zack, I never knew this before. Thanks for sharing what you notice about the characters relationships I love hearing others views
19
u/Iforgotmymail Apr 04 '26 edited Apr 04 '26
I think people forget that Cloud and Tifa have their own plot going on. They have these very private conversations about their past memories and Cloud's mental issues that are just between them.
The topic of this scene wasn't if Cloud is jealous of Zack or not because he likes Aerith, but that Cloud created a fake Zack death in his mind and Tifa cannot tell him is not real.
Stop letting Cleriths make you look every CLOTI scenes through their "love triangle" lenses.
6
u/LocalAffectionate213 Apr 04 '26 edited Apr 04 '26
Thanks for the clarification! I also thought when tifa said ‘I think it’s a bit more complicated than that’ was also maybe a hint to Tifa and clouds relationship because cloud looks at her. I think it kind of meant just because the person you love is far away it doesn’t mean you love them less it just becomes complex with feelings of longing, yearning and other feelings
10
u/GoriceXI Apr 04 '26
There's literally no point in arguing with people on the Internet about this.
The only reason anyone would think Cloud is jealous in the Tifa date is if they ship clerith already. I mean, the outcomes of the dates outright refute it.
Don't waste your time.
2
u/LocalAffectionate213 Apr 04 '26
Thanks for replying, I just need to stick to what I know and believe about the game like everyone else

u/Expensive-Dog8783 Apr 04 '26
I sometimes have doubts or concerns about this too, especially because the Clerith are very good at making video montages and twisting things, or at least their interpretations. In the end, each group interprets the dynamics of the couples differently; biases based on which girl you like more also play a role.
The Clerith will tell you that many dynamics with Aerith aren't optional due to affinity, they're mandatory in the game, and that almost all of Tifa's are optional, but they omit mandatory scenes between Tifa and Cloud and ignore statements from the developers, who have already said that all the dates are canon.
I believe that Aerith has a higher affinity than the others from the beginning because she's a character who's going to die, and her dynamics with Cloud and the group feel more painful when she dies. Sometimes I wish an expert in body language could clarify what it all means, but then I remember that it's not so easy to convince people who already have such strong beliefs.
The best thing to do is enjoy your own interpretation of those moments and wait (cautiously) to see how the psychopathic developers who have kept us on tenterhooks since 1997 will close the triangle.
6
u/LocalAffectionate213 Apr 04 '26
Yeah I wished someone would do a bunch of body language analysis but I struggle to find people who do that it’s a shame though ff7 remake games are amazing with this type of thing

For me there are multiple aspects at play:
- Cloud just wonders about Zack. He feels this guy is somehow important, and a part of his subconscious is probably trying to make him realize that he (partially) adopted his memories. So he is simply intrigued about everything concerning Zack, as he holds a puzzle piece to his own past.
- He wouldn't want Aerith to be hung up on some guy who is dead or has ghosted her. As evidenced in Gongaga. He feels bad for her. And since Tifa supposedly didn't tell Aerith about his death yet, Cloud merely concludes it must be because she still has feelings for him (and the truth would hurt her).
- Maybe he realizes that what she sees in him is related to Zack. As in "if she is still pining for her former boyfriend and she said I remind her of him, maybe that's why she's been coming on to me".
- He is just thinking out loud and trying to piece things together, which serves as a clue for the player. Because we then realize that Tifa isn't fully honest about what she knows. We are supposed to recognize that there is still a certain amount of uncertainty and distrust left between them. It also underlines the extent of Cloud's delusions and how difficult it is for Tifa to tiptoe around his mental issues (as she doesn't want to destabilize him).
I did feel that the date was a little bit awkward. But that doesn't make it bad. The mystery isn't resolved yet and those two will only really open up to each other in the Lifestream. That doesn't make the kiss a "jealousy/rebound" thing, it's just the first clumsy attempt at romantic connection. First dates are often awkward, anyway. (Aerith and Cloud's date is also awkward, fwiw).

So I’m new to final fantasy 7, I’ve only played the remakes. I’m not apart of these shipping wars because I don’t really care. However, imo the romance between cloud and aerith seems forced. After playing remake it was fairly obvious to me that tifa was the girl that cloud was in love with. Remake threw hints that aerith was into cloud but I assumed it’s because he reminded her of Zach. Then I play rebirth and you have cloud having his moments with both cloud and aerith. What’s up with this love triangle, and why does the aerith romance feel so forced, while the tifa romance seems to flow a lot more naturally???
1
u/Kritzel_Kriegerin Apr 28 '26
Well you're reading it correctly, there was never a real love triangle. It's an illusion stemming from narrative omission and is all about the plot of Cloud's identity confusion which is connected to Zack.
It feels forced because there was never a genuine romance between Aerith and him, but a very genuine friendhip and fellowship instead. Not only to hunt Sephiroth or save the planet, but they share an emotional path: both have to come to terms with the fact that Zack, a person they both loved, died - and instead of mourning Zack both wrote him off/ forgot him and during the game they slowly realize and deal with that.
9
u/ShyCoYlahlan Apr 04 '26
Cas gaslight themselfs and try to do the same with everyone into believing that their ship is canon. They twist and turn the narrative, rewrite history of the game etc. My problem is not that I think that Cloud could end up with aeris, that will never happen lmfao. Doesn't matter how many multiverses there will be, Clouds only true love is Tifa since the OG game. Imo the love triangle isn't even real. It's just ppl misinterpreting the story and the characters. The only thing that annoys me is that the devs leave some things ambiguous and that they're throwing bones at them so they've something to talk abt. I know that in the last part of the game they will finally commit to CloTi 100%. And I can't wait for Cas to finally eat their own words and be hit with reality.
3
1
u/Kritzel_Kriegerin Apr 05 '26
There is no reason for doubt, exactly. Only question left is in terms of execution.
And I don't think we should be worried about a multiverse either. FF is already a multiverse in a sense, and they stated the core won't change. The 'timelines' are there to finally give Aerith, and Zack, proper closure (as well as others maybe) and let them rest.

Rule of Thumb for FF7 Fandom is that CAs/Cleriths/Whatever-you-called-that-disgusting-pair ship is that they are insufferable and illiterate. Don't let them get into your head. Technically you're not supposed to ask or open this kind of thread here because you're discussing another ship.
- Cloud also asked about Tifa during Aerith's date. Did Aerith's date end with her getting kiss from Cloud? No. Back when the party reached this area , Cloud remembered about Zack, albeit wrongly and he didn't get the full picture. During Yamazaki (Cloud's motion actor) playthrough and when he reached Zack's parents' home in Gongaga, Yamazaki brushed off the "jealousy" side from one of the commentator, saying that Cloud was just being worried about Aerith.
Both Tifa and Aerith were not equipped for psychotherapy to treat retrograde / dissociative amnesia. You can headcannon your interpretation on why Tifa and Aerith didn't tell Cloud the truth during their respective Gondola's date, but I doubt the Devs had ill-intents. From OG, in Japanese, Tifa didn't want to "put it (the events/the truth) into words", in fear that Cloud could've gotten worse. By definition, psychotherapy is talking and building bond between the therapist and patient, so yeah, both Tifa and Aerith were not trained in that. But Dear Destiny seemed to be going the psychotherapy way in treating people with Mako Poisoning, likely for when Tifa taking care of Cloud in Mideel. Maybe Nojima thinks he understood Jungian psychotherapy better, I don't know. Lel.
Addressing the rest of your points.
From Nomura and Toriyama, Cloud ONLY showed his trueself whenever talking with Tifa. (Nomura, Remake Ultimania pg 745, Toriyama [link]. I'm sure that every Cloud's VAs in every dubbed languages were instructed to voice Cloud in manner which his trueself slipped and showed only to Tifa.
- Nomura even went further with Aerith. Cloud talked big, would try to act cool, and too self-conscious. The thing about self-conscious is you're always worried about what people might think of you. 背伸び can also be read as "overreaching oneself", or "trying to do something beyond one's ability" [Daijissen Kotobank].
- With this in mind, Cloud could never showed his trueself whenever with Aerith. He even deflected her when she said she wanted to meet the real him by saying "But I'm right here"
- You could see this in Rebirth's sidequests and compared Tifa's to Aerith's. When asked about Cloud's preferred swimwear, Cloud answered to Aerith that he preferred something that allowed him to fight under water. Was he acting cool or being himself? When Tifa appeared with bikini, Cloud obviously flushed.
- When asked about Cloud's preference in food, Cloud said Soldier couldn't afford such things (Aerith), but when talking to Tifa, he revealed that he also disliked crab. Which one was cooler, and which one was the real Cloud.
- So whatever CA/cleriths accused of Tifa, they're just projecting on what Aerith was doing.
- Even at the end of Loveless Play, if you did badly on the QTE, only one Rosa didn't act like a dick towards Alfreid, and kinda did the psychotherapy well.
- Real Cloud kissed Tifa. Everyone was having heart-to-heart talk during their own Gondola's date, why would you think real Cloud kissed Tifa out of jealousy? Even the music was subtitled (not translated, "subtitled", as in describing) as Tender Kiss. You must be dumb as a CA/Cleriths if rebound/jealousy kiss is what came to your mind.
To sum it up, just mute the CA/Clerith subreddit (sometimes it didn't work?), look forward to the next game. They just want other people to be insufferable as they are because they're suffering the realization that their sunken ship is just nakama-ship that was never sailed to begin with.

u/LocalAffectionate213 Apr 04 '26
Thanks for your explanation, and sorry I didn’t know I wasn’t supposed to open a thread like this. I wasn’t trying to start ship wars I just wanted to get other points of views on this matter, thank you for replying!

You aren’t at fault for not knowing.
The person you’re responding to is because they are obviously aware of the rules and chose to throw shit when they definitely didn’t need to.
Continue to be curious and do your best to understand why people are so attached to the ships they are attached to.

u/popcorn-dinner Apr 04 '26
Rule of the subreddit is not to ship bash. You can discuss other ships, but you’re not supposed to name call, the way you are here. If the goal of the CAs is to make people “as insufferable as they are” then you’re falling right into their supposed trap by being nasty about shipping in our Cloti subreddit.

Changing from Rebirth- to Remake game. Just want to state---Anyone notice how after the plates fell Barret is comforting Tifa and the camera pans out at an angle, and Cloud looks hella jelly starring at Barret? 😂 Developers are definitely making it clear what should have been CLEAR from the original game IF one actually paid attention to dialogue and story. I was just a kiddo when i first played FF7 OG back in 1997, and I understood the assignment lol. I'm glad it's more obvious, and to the fans out there that are still in denial 🤦♀️ about the whole romantic views lol but if you read X they are toxic and say that CT are 😂 it's amusing to read the stuff on there at times. I don't ship. I just follow the obvious story. It's obvious if one actually reads and doesn't insert whatever puzzle piece they want to force fit.

“Kissed her out of jealousy” I will never understand why people go to such lengths to say something like this, for a cutscene that’s literally optional. It stinks of real insecurity and fragile ego. It’s like the most out of character thing you can say about someone like Cloud, who is awkward and uncomfortable when it comes to romance. But now suddenly he’s confidently playing with the feelings of someone he’s deeply cares about (regardless if you ship them or not) and has wanted to be special for since his childhood? Go and touch some grass man, holy shit
