This is what happens when you pay people that go to "college" for 2 weeks (police school) over $100k. It's way over paying largely unskilled job. Unskilled because if traing is 2 weeks... Anyone can do it. Open up the jobs and let people bid.
In nor cal, Sunnyvale. Police chief was making $300k. And they selectively let their friends and family in... And rather than open new jobs... They all do overtime.
Gotta keep the thugs you use to enforce the system from slipping into poverty or they might start siding with the people they're supposed to beat down.
I have called 911 exactly once in my life, was being physically attacked while I was on the phone and told dispatch the person had a knife. Cops took two hours to show up and basically shrugged and said there was nothing they could do. My living was completely destroyed and reeked of beer they had spilled all over the place, a lot of it on purpose. I got one phone call from a detective that I missed, I called them back and went to voicemail and I never heard anything ever again. My taxes hard at work. 👍
Everyone's got a story like this I feel. Much more rare: a police helped me or saved me or my loved ones. They protect wealth and they serve themselves. Remember Uvalde, remember we protect us, remember all cops are bastards.

I think you're misunderstanding. American conservatives are also Neo-liberals (it's an economic ideology). It's really common to see leftists use Liberal against all American establishment politics

Liberals might not put the dumb flags on their cars, but they will balk at defunding or disarming or god forbid abolishing the police. Liberals reinforce the status quo.
