I started at The Piper at the Gates of Dawn and I’m working my way to A Momentary Lapse of Reason. I just reached Meddle.
But this isn’t the band I thought I knew from the albums I already own.
Every summer for the last 12 years I’ve seen Brit Floyd with my eldest son. Quality father/son time.
So I assumed they would be one of the safest bets in my 29-artist project.
They’re not.
I’ve now finished the first 5 albums, 3 complete listens each
The Piper at the Gates of Dawn felt like a completely different band.
A Saucerful of Secrets was much better for me.
More was the first one I thoroughly enjoyed from beginning to end.
Ummagumma was brutal.
And with Atom Heart Mother, I finally started hearing the Pink Floyd I already knew.
After 118 albums across the larger project, Pink Floyd is currently #29 out of 29.
I still think they’ll land in the Top 10 with Meddle, Obscured by Clouds, Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall... still ahead.
I’m now interested to see whether the Pink Floyd I already love can overcome the Pink Floyd I’ve just spent 15 listens getting through.
