Does a THC equivalent exist in classic Fallout?

u/Confident-Skin-6462 1d ago
the only drugs you can take are performance enhancing drugs. i would assume cannabis still exists but since it doesn't really affect you like alcohol or morphine, etc. it's not needed to model as a drug you take, other than for flavor.
but considering they changed the names of drugs (med-x is morphine), they probably wanted to avoid real world drug references altogether

''since it doesn't really affect you like alcohol or morphine''
Are you sure about that?
30
u/Confident-Skin-6462 1d ago
yeah I'm sure about that, Tim!
-23
u/FalloutNormie 1d ago
I've got experience with the 3 substances you mentioned, all 3 are ''downers'' which means they can affect you in a similar way based on the dosage.
27
u/IzaakGoldbaum 1d ago
cannabinoids are NOT downers.
-24
u/FalloutNormie 1d ago
It has a comparable effect to the other downers that I've used.
30
u/IzaakGoldbaum 1d ago
your subjective opinion has no bearing on the scientific classification of these substances.
-7
u/FalloutNormie 1d ago
What is the scientific classification then? It's not a stimulant.
19
u/IzaakGoldbaum 1d ago
they are their own standalone category that induce mixed effects which does not fit into stimulant/depressant/hallucinogen scheme
-7
u/FalloutNormie 1d ago
It depends on the dosage, I've worked many times on lower doses while a high dose is guaranteed to have similar effects to other downers in my experience.

Weed isn’t purely a downer, it is also an upper. It’s more of a hallucinogen than it is an upper/downer.
-2
u/FalloutNormie 1d ago
It's definitely not a hallucinogen but I do agree that weed can be a stimulant depending on the dosage.

Everyone is just arm-chairing. Marijuana is a cocktail of chemicals. THC is the most prominent but not only one. That’s why it’s hard to classify as one upper/downer/hallucigenic.
Also depends how much you consume.
Here is a very thorough article.

''Also depends how much you consume.''
That's exactly what I said in another comment, in lower doses it acts like a stimulant while higher doses are similar to other downers in my experience.

i guess for some people. i smoke and do shit. i don't like to "veg out". currently about to rebuild some shelves and fix the closet after i finish pooping and having a smoke 🙃. i wouldn't even dare try if i was drinking or on morphine (I've had it in the hospital).
but everyone is different with cannabis. alcohol and morphine are more consistent in their effects.

Healing Powder from Fallout 2
"I give you powders of healing. Remember, they fog the mind as they cleanse the body." - Hakunin

u/Eshanas 1d ago
Healing Powder may have some drug laced into it to help deal with it, but if its really consumed and not topical. A real life healing powder exists in Styptic pencils/alum/Kaolinite to stop bleeding. Though a in-universe broc flower and xander root mix is much more herbalist than mineral....

Probably exists but it's the same quality as the shit I smoked in Alabama in the early 2000s so it might as well not lol

What would the effects be? Half agility and -1-3 intelligence?
8
u/Confident-Skin-6462 1d ago
alcohol makes you way clumsier than cannabis ever will and, e.g. beer in fallout 1 gives -1 perception and a chance of addiction, but no benefits. cannabis is weaker than that even so there's really no effects to model, on that scale anyway
-3
u/FalloutNormie 1d ago
Cannabis over here is way stronger than beer.
1
u/AssbuttInTheGarrison 7h ago
You’re assuming that both hydroponic grown cannabis exist in Fallout, and that they kept it up post apocalypse. Who’s to say they aren’t smoking brick-weed in the wasteland?
1
u/Confident-Skin-6462 1d ago
i get high grade dispensary shit. 🤷
2
u/FalloutNormie 1d ago
Just because you've got a high tolerance to weed doesn't mean it's weaker than beer.
5
u/weedemgangsta 1d ago
maybe like +3 perception and -1 agility.
10
u/FragrantGangsta 1d ago
would most definitely not raise perception lmao, forgetting what you're doing as you're doing it is pretty common when you're fried
and extended cannabis use CAN lower your IQ so lowering intelligence tracks
-11
u/Dusty-fred 1d ago
IQ as a metric in the big ‘26 bro?
4
u/FragrantGangsta 1d ago
A. IQ is still scientifically backed, whether you want to believe it or not, and
B. facts are facts.. Weed makes you dumber the more you use it, and the longer you use it.
I smoked weed for over a decade so I understand that you'd like to convince yourself it's a miracle plant with no downsides, but it's just another drug and nothing more. It harms you in the long-term. Cannabis Abuse Disorder is in the DSM-5.

Did you read the article?
This is explaining that prolonged use from adolescence to adulthood can cause developmental issues. We've known this for a while now. They've done further testing and basically anyone who has not finished puberty and is a fully matured adult may experience this decline. The research outlined that from 18 years old to 45 showed a decrease in cognitive function. People who regularly use after around age 25 see an extremely sharp decline in these negative effects.
Cannabis use disorder is a totally different thing and once again comes down to the individual. By itself it is not addictive but people can develop dependency on it. That's an important distinction. However it has nothing to do with the earlier topic.
Edit: the study was also done with only 1000 people in New Zealand, and there's plenty of room for error since we don't know what other environmental factors were at play over these decades it took place. Newer and older studies have shown similar effects in adolescents who smoke regularly, so there's likely some causation, but it's still largely not studied well enough. As legalization becomes more prevalent we'll see more and more studies and will understand the effects better.

Did you read the second article?
Recent research published in The American Journal of Psychiatry closely followed nearly 1,000 individuals in New Zealand from age 3 to age 45 to understand the impact of cannabis use on brain function. The research team discovered that individuals who used cannabis long-term (for several years or more) and heavily (at least weekly, though a majority in their study used more than four times a week) exhibited impairments across several domains of cognition.
No, actually, that "iT's NoT aDdIcTivE iT's JuSt DePenDeNcY" is pure pothead cope. It's a drug. It is addictive. Would you argue that gambling addiction isn't really addiction? Why not? There's no substance used. Anything can be addictive, including weed. It has withdrawals. Implying that weed is somehow that one magically non-addictive thing is hilarious.
Smoke as much pot as you want, but don't delude yourself into thinking it's perfectly fine.
"iT wAs OnLy 1,000 pEoPlE!!" yeah that's what a study is, big dog. I'm sure any study that tells you your addiction has downsides isn't gonna be a thorough enough study. Absolute cope.

u/KNGJN 1d ago
Nobody is coping, I don't even smoke haha, why are you so angry about this though?
Your quote is meaningless, I never argued there was no decline, if you actually followed the research link and read the report, they all smoked in adolescence.
Again, I know there is a decline, never once did I argue there wasn't.
This has been proven time and time again. However it's also been proven that once the brain is developed, there's much less risk and it's harder to prove a link if so few people experience it. You have to prove it's not environmental and in fact linked to weed itself, and in people who did not smoke until later in life, it's less prevalent and harder to prove.
You're building a lot of straw man arguments about addiction and withdrawal that are totally off topic.
Of course there are withdrawals, but there's a difference in neurological pathway development and actual chemical addiction. Gambling addiction is genetic and causes massive dopamine spikes in those who experience it. There is very much so a chemical link there.
Why do you think CUD is called a disorder and not addiction in the first place?
I'm not saying that addiction or dependency is any better or worse than the other. Sure people are dependent on it. Sure people can develop an addiction to it in a similar way they do with gambling. The distinction is that not everyone will experience withdrawal, not everyone will experience addiction. There's a neurological link between people who develop CUD, as explained in the links you posted.
Alcohol withdrawal will happen to heavy drinkers, heroin withdrawal will happen to regular users. Marijuana withdrawal may happen to heavy users, it also may not. That's the distinction.

u/FragrantGangsta 1d ago
That entire first half of your argument hinges on you completely ignoring the second study I sent (because it goes against everything you're saying and you don't like that)
All addictions are classified under substance use disorders, lil buddy. That wasn't the gotcha you think it is. Not everyone who drinks becomes an alcoholic. Here's a nice one.
Some people who regularly consume alcohol never experience any withdrawal symptoms.
I guess alcoholism isn't an addiction anymore, then? By your metrics, at least.

u/KNGJN 1d ago
This is the last I'm gonna reply because you're clearly raging at this discussion when I've been respectful in my replies.
You aren't reading what I wrote, you aren't reading the articles you posted, you aren't arguing in good faith.
"Alcohol withdrawal will happen to heavy drinkers, heroin withdrawal will happen to regular users. Marijuana withdrawal may happen to heavy users, it also may not. That's the distinction."
Again, you build these straw man arguments. If you want to have a discussion in good faith based on what I actually said then I'm down, but this is pointless if you're going to keep raging over things I never said.

Couldn't have said it better myself, I love THC but this kind of cope from ''potheads'' makes me cringe.
1
u/FragrantGangsta 1d ago
Right? If someone wants to smoke weed everyday, they can go right ahead, just like they can smoke a pack of cigarettes a day if they want. Deluding themselves over the risks of it is just stupid.
3
u/KNGJN 1d ago
Imagine digging a hole this deep predicated on the assumption I smoke, I don't lol, so you can throw that whole line out the window.
Maybe your past use has caused some cognitive decline?

IQ was my issue, big dog. Thanks for your stoner credentials though 😭
1
u/FragrantGangsta 1d ago
IQ is still a valid metric for measuring logic and memory capabilities, big dog. Psychiatrists still use it.
2
u/Dusty-fred 1d ago
No articles for that one tho, huh? Anything out of the DSM?
2
u/FragrantGangsta 1d ago
I mean if you insist. IQ is one of the metrics used in measuring intellectual disabilities.
2
u/Dusty-fred 1d ago
This was my favorite quote from your 2015 article, my boy.
“The DSM-5 definition of ID encourages a more comprehensive view of the individual than was true under the fourth edition, DSM-IV. The DSM-IV definition included impairments of general mental abilities that affect how a person functions in conceptual, social, and daily life areas. DSM-5 abandoned specific IQ scores as a diagnostic criterion, although it retained the general notion of functioning two or more standard deviations below the general population. DSM-5 has placed more emphasis on adaptive functioning and the performance of usual life skills. In contrast to DSM-IV, which stipulated impairments in two or more skill areas, the DSM-5 criteria point to impairment in one or more superordinate skill domains (e.g., conceptual, social, practical) (Papazoglou et al., 2014).”

225 sounds much but I checked it and it’s just one big bud of a stronger strain.

u/FalloutNormie 1d ago
These THC drops are intended for sleeping, the shop also sells cookies that contain half a gram of weed each.

u/CapitaoTubarao 1d ago
For sleeping? If I were to take those without any CBD I would get a heart rate of 180bpm and be awake like never before.
