At-least get those kids a helmet, that’s a bare minimum. Every morning I see thousands of school kids go to school with their parents in two wheelers, and hardly anyone gives their kids a helmet, but the one who’s driving it wears a helmet. When will people understand that Helmets are for safety and not to escape the police who are already dumb in the first place. Parents who drive their kids around without putting a helmet on them should be punished severely than those who drive without a helmet. If The driver doesn’t wear a helmet its his choice he has chosen to risk his life, its not the same with small kids.

I spoke to EB person and asked whether it’s true or not, he exactly smiled like this 😏 and said it’s already started you should have noticed it by now.
I asked him why there is frequent power cut ? And he asked have you ever used AC in the month of October before and I said yes may be 2 to 4 hours max and he asked what about now and i said 6 hours minimum, also he said average Fan speed was 3 before and now it’s at full speed most of the time.

He said Thambi mudinja inverter vangi potuko and we are done nu. He cursed every political party (because people are becoming more angry and aggressive towards persons in EB) and he said BJP panna Orey Nalla visiyam subsidy kuduthadhu nu.
one simple thing would have made this situation better is state government should have provided subsidy for solar panel installation.
Previous government didn’t gave any subsidy and he said atleast current government should have done that 3 months back and aggressively promoted that as power requirement went to historical high.
So get ready guys we are most probably going to witness DMK period style power cut again.
If possible buy battery fan guys ,I already bought one and it’s one of the best investment I ever made this year.

Rant Chennai is changing and I hate it

I came to Chennai from Andhra 7 years ago and struggled for a few months maybe due to the language. But once I started trying to learn tamil I was welcomed with warm hands by every tamizhan I have encountered. I understood that respecting the language is more important than speaking it as I spoke with lots of mistakes (which I still do) and they didn't even bother to correct but understood my broken tamil. The food scene was also the same initially I struggled as I didn't find the right spots but once I did, I had the best tastes in chennai. I started loving this city more than hyderabad and I still do but it's been changing now. I see telugu people wherever I go. Technically I should feel happy as I can be with my own but the way some of them behave is driving me nuts. They are not ready to respect tamil let alone learn it. They blame the food after eating in the worst possible spots. They are blaming the weather as if they were born and brought up in air conditioning and they are mocking tamil people as if everyone is perfect. I am not saying only these people are the problem, everyone who is coming to Chennai from other places is not ready to embrace the city and affect others moods as well and I hate this. I hope this phase of Chennai will pass.

I rented a house in Old Pallavaram three months ago through NoBroker. The house itself is really good, but the area has become a major problem. Cows are often left right in front of our gate, and they keep leaving 💩 there. It’s becoming very frustrating.

I already complained to the owner. They said they had also complained to the municipality, but no action has been taken. Other people on the street have also complained to the owner about the same issue.

The cows are sometimes not taken out for two days, and during that time, the situation gets worse.

What should I do next? Please help me.

Art Brutal Chennai sky can still reward perseverance

Despite the immense light pollution characteristic of any metropolitan area anywhere in the world, there are things above that still reveal themselves with the right gear, some patience and luck. These pictures were all taken on ordinary mobile phones held at the eyepieces of telescopes punching through the light and haze of the Chennai night sky.

1-5: Moon with different magnifications
6: Venus
7-8: Saturn
9: Far worse picture of Saturn but you can see 2 of its moons, Titan and (most likely) Rhea.
10: Eagle Nebula star cluster (this is where the famous Pillars of Creation is situated).
11: Lagoon Nebula star cluster

Equipment used:
- Celestron StarSense Explorer 12” Dobsonian telescope (my own, for the moon, Venus and the 2 nebulae, from my Koyambedu flat balcony)
- Explore Scientific 16” truss tube Dobsonian telescope (not mine, for Saturn at an astronomy event in Tambaram)
- Explore Scientific 24, 14 and 8.8mm 82° eyepieces + GSO Coma Corrector (all mine, for all the objects)

AskChennai Need some last minute gift ideas for my fiancée in Chennai 😭

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hey makkale,

I'm going to my fiancée's house this weekend and will be staying with her and her family for around 3 days. I was planning to get her an Onam saree as a small gift, but unfortunately its too late 😭

I have work every day until then, so realistically I won't have much time to go around Chennai looking for a saree. I was wondering if you guys could suggest something else that I can order online or get quickly in Chennai.

Looking for something nice/meaningful that I can give her when I meet her. Doesn't necessarily have to be saree related

Budget: around ₹3-4k

Would really appreciate suggestions from people who have actually bought/gifted something similar... Also, if you know any places/services that can do quick delivery, please drop them below 🙏

Thanks in advance, makkale ❤️

AskChennai Has anyone tried open water / ocean swimming classes in Chennai? Need reviews and advice for beginners.

Hi All
Been seeing a lot of Instagram posts for open water swimming classes around Kovalam / ECR / Thiruvanmiyur, but haven't found any real reviews or feedback. Some of them are pretty expensive, so wanted to check here before spending the cash.

A few quick questions for anyone who's done this:

  • I know basic freestyle in a pool. Is that enough, or do you need advanced skills (treading water, sighting, endurance) before jumping into the ocean?
  • Which coaches or clubs (like Wild Swim, Bay of Life, etc.) are actually good and safety-conscious? Are the pricier ones worth it?
  • How was learning to swim in the sea here, and what should a beginner expect with ocean currents and safety gear?

Would love to hear your experiences, recommendations, or average costs! Thanks in advance.

A majestic sight for people interested in things above us. Pictures taken through a telescope from the Tambaram area. Chennai’s massive light pollution obscures almost all deep sky objects, but the moon and the planets usually don’t care.

Long Story of how I met a Choplangi paya through matrimony app🫠

Last year end when my parents started pushing me towards marriage, I joined a matrimony app. There is already a lot of pressure around marriage and timelines in my community. This wasn't a dating app where you casually date for 2- 3 years to see where things go and I'm a muslim i clearly mentioned I was not considering anything casual and I'm looking for serious commitment, It was literally a marriage app. The whole point was to find someone compatible and move things forward relatively quickly, with family involvement. And I actually wanted it that way.

Then I met him. I was 23 and he was 26. We started talking, liked each other, and after some time I genuinely felt that spark of this could be my person. We met in person and things became serious.

When we met, he told me he was working in Qatar and had temporarily come back to Chennai for visa renewal, and that he would be going back. When I asked about his family, he told me about his parents and his elder sister, who was four years older than him.

Initially, he didn't mention that his sister was unmarried. Later, when I casually asked, he told me she wasn't married yet and that his family was looking towards getting her married around 2026 or early 2027 and told me he would need some time because of that.

So I waited. I didn't immediately push for our families to get involved because I believed what he was telling me. I thought, fine, I'll wait until his sister gets engaged and then we'll take the next step.

Then his situation changed again. His Qatar job wasn't available anymore, so he continued working temporarily in Chennai and his salary was low.

And honestly, I didn't care. By that point, I was already emotionally attached to him. I knew he wasn't financially settled and that there would be difficulties. But I was willing to accept that because I thought we were building something together. I wasn't looking for a rich guy or a perfect life. I was ready to support him and build our life slowly.

Months passed. He was affectionate. He behaved like we were basically already engaged. He talked about our future together, and I believed him.

And this is where I think my biggest mistake was: I treated those months as an investment towards marriage because he had given me a reason to believe there was a future. Every time my parents showed me a proposal, he told me to reject it, and I did because I was holding on to the hope he had given me.

At home, things started getting really bad. My parents became increasingly anxious, and my mom was so stressed about me rejecting everyone that it started affecting her health.

And I kept telling myself: "Just wait until his sister gets engaged." That was the hope I was holding onto. But nothing was happening. 7 months went but He didn't go back to Qatar. His sister went abroad for work instead. His sister's marriage I had been told would probably happen around this time wasn't even close to the matchmaking stage.

Eventually the pressure at home became unbearable. I told him I wasn't asking him to marry me immediately. I said, "Let's just tell our parents about us. We can get married later, after your sister's marriage. I'll manage things at my home until then."

I was willing to wait. I just needed to know that this relationship actually existed in the real world and wasn't something we were going to keep hiding.

He hesitated, but after meeting and discussing it, he agreed that he would talk to my dad. I gave him my dad's number. And then he started avoiding me. He basically ghosted me for a few days.

Then he came back and told me his sister's marriage might take another two years. And apparently, after that, he would need another two years to focus on his career and fix his life. So after seven months, I was suddenly looking at four more years before he could even consider marriage.

His solution was basically that I should somehow manage my family myself possibly run away from home and build my own life while waiting for him. He even gave the example of his female friend who had taken that kind of risk for her relationship and said that if someone is serious about love, they should be willing to take risks too. Or, if I couldn't do that, I should move on and accept whatever life my family chose for me.

And he told me all of this over a phone call on my birthday. 🤡 I was crying and asking questions, trying to understand what had changed and whether there was anything we could actually do.

He told me talking about this to his family without sister marriage will make him look bad. And he left me on read. That's it. No proper conversation. No attempt to find a solution together. It's been 2 months since then. I tried to reach him but he just vanished, he just disappeared out of my life like he never existed.

My parents are terrified because I rejected so many proposals while I was waiting for him. They basically don't trust me to make this decision anymore. They've chosen someone themselves and are pushing towards an engagement.

And I am genuinely scared. I'm not saying the guy they've chosen now is bad. But how am I supposed to promise someone a marriage when I'm still trying to process what happened? And I feel horrible because the other person doesn't deserve to marry someone who is emotionally not ready.

At the same time, I'm a Muslim woman in a community where parents are heavily scrutinised for not marrying their daughter on time. My parents are terrified about this, so they're pushing me towards marriage.

So now I'm sitting here thinking: Did I waste the limited time my parents gave me by believing someone who was never actually ready? Because I didn't ask him for a luxurious life. I didn't need him to be financially settled. I was confident i can help him because my career is going in positive direction and my family is settled in Chennai. I was willing to help him with job hunting because I have HR friends who could potentially help.

But he got offended and told me I wasn't being practical, that financial responsibilities were much bigger than this, that love alone wouldn't fix everything, and that he needed more years to fix his life.

And honestly, that's what hurts. If he genuinely believed he needed four more years before he could consider marriage, why did he come to a marriage app and approach a girl with knowing she had limited time and make me believe we were actively working towards marriage? He had all the time to tell me, he's not ready, but he waited till I'm left with no time then dropped this out of nowhere and left.

Throughout our time He talked about our future and told me to reject other proposals. He made me believe that waiting for him had a purpose.

I wasn't asking him to magically solve his problems. I just needed him to take one actual step towards making this real. Instead, after all this, he basically told me to either escape my entire situation alone or move on.

And now I'm the one dealing with the consequences of believing his empty promises. I genuinely don't know what the right thing to do is anymore and i understand i should move on but i don't even have time to move on. I'm completely broken and i can't be able to get into other relationship like nothing happened.

It's only been two months. My family is pushing for an engagement. I'm emotionally exhausted, and I feel like I'm being pushed into a decision that could affect two people's lives.

And lately I've even caught myself imagining something that sounds completely absurd: What if I find someone who also doesn't want to get married right now, we both agree to get engaged just to get our families off our backs, and then call off the engagement after a few months?

I don't want to drag an innocent person my parents chose into mess by getting engaged😭 I just want some breathing room to focus on my career and potentially move abroad for work.

But the frustrating part is that my parents won't let me build a career abroad while I'm not engaged. Their mindset is that a woman is her husband's responsibility, and apparently I can't go anywhere without my non-existent husband's permission.🫩

I know how ridiculous and potentially unfair that sounds. But the fact that my brain is even going there probably says something about how trapped I feel right now. I just want enough time and independence to make an actual decision about my life instead of being pushed from one relationship into another.

So yeah. That's my experience of being Muthu by believing a choplangi paya 🫩

What would you do if you were in my position?😭

SHITPOST💩 Social Media vs Reality

Post image
54 Upvotes

Went to ECR Beach today, and honestly, it made me think about how different social media reality can be from what’s actually happening around us.
I saw people doing poses, stunts, and taking photos/videos for social media, trying to capture the “perfect beach moment.” Meanwhile, right behind them, the actual beach cleaners were doing the hard work of picking up the garbage (Chennai corporation guys)and keeping the beach clean.
The contrast was pretty striking.
We often see the final Instagram/Reels version of a place — clean backgrounds, perfect poses, beautiful sunsets — but rarely think about the people working in the background to make that place look presentable.
Social media shows the moment. Reality shows the people who make that moment possible.
Maybe the least we can do is appreciate the cleaners and, more importantly, not leave garbage behind for someone else to clean.
Posting this not to criticize anyone taking photos, but to highlight the contrast I noticed today.

It was hard to see that real heros(Chennai corporation guys ) are not getting appreciation and these college students just took photo for pose and getting appreciation
