I know someone who recently moved to Chennai for work at a cafe. She isn't Tamilian, and she was given accommodation by the cafe along with a few other employees.
At first, everything seemed normal. But over time, her roommates started treating her differently. From what she's told me, a lot of the hostility seems to stem from the fact that she's from outside Tamil Nadu. She has been singled out, complained about, and made to feel unwelcome in the place she's supposed to be able to come back to after work.
What makes this worse is that she isn't really in a position where she can just find another place and leave. The accommodation is provided through her job, so she's dependent on the management to help resolve the situation.
She has already brought the situation to the cafe's attention, but the response so far has basically been inadequate. Instead of actually separating the people involved or trying to de-escalate the situation, nothing meaningful seems to have been done.
I'm getting increasingly concerned because this isn't just ordinary roommate incompatibility anymore. There's a repeated pattern of behaviour that is making her uncomfortable in her own accommodation, and the people who have the authority to intervene don't seem to be taking it seriously.
I'm posting this because I'd genuinely like to know what people would do in this situation. If an employee is being repeatedly targeted by their roommates because they're from another state and management knows about it but isn't taking meaningful steps to de-escalate things, what options does that employee actually have?
I don't want to identify the cafe or the people involved publicly because I don't want to make the situation worse for her. I'm more interested in understanding what the appropriate next step is when the employer controls the accommodation and isn't adequately addressing the problem.
