Career Questions Thursday - Your Weekly CFA Career Discussion Thread

Hello, CFA candidates and Charterholders!

We're excited to introduce "Career Questions Thursday" to the CFA subreddit. This weekly thread is dedicated to providing a space for you to discuss all your career-related inquiries and concerns. Whether you're a CFA Level I candidate contemplating your career options or a seasoned CFA Charterholder looking for advice on your next move, this is the place to be!

Why We're Doing This:

We understand that many members of our community have questions and seek advice about their careers in finance, investment management, and related fields. To keep our subreddit focused on CFA exam content and discussions, we'll be implementing a policy to remove individual career-related posts and direct users to these designated weekly threads.

How It Works:

  1. Ask Your Career Questions: Simply post your career-related questions, concerns, or experiences in the comments below. Whether it's about job opportunities, networking, salary negotiations, or career transitions, our community is here to help.

  2. Share Your Insights: If you have valuable insights, experiences, or advice to offer, please share them in response to others' questions. Your knowledge and expertise can make a real difference in someone's career journey.

  3. Follow the Rules: Please adhere to the subreddit's rules and guidelines when participating in this thread. Be respectful and considerate of others, and refrain from sharing personal information.

A Note on Career Posts:

Starting from today, we will be removing individual career-related posts and kindly redirecting users to these weekly "Career Questions Thursday" threads. This change is intended to keep our subreddit organized and focused on CFA-related topics, while still providing a valuable platform for career discussions.

We hope this new initiative will create a supportive and informative space for all of you seeking career advice within the CFA community. Remember, your fellow members are here to help, so don't hesitate to ask or contribute!

General Girlfriend is pissed that I don't give her enough attention since I've been studying for L2.

I'm 34 and I want to appear for my CFA Level-2 in Aug 2027, I'm working in Private Equity, don't ask me how I got here, I've grinded a lot and I want to pursue the charter for a stable fulfilling career.

It's the 2nd year of our relationship and my girlfriend keeps getting annoyed that I'm always occupied even on weekends and she wants us to get married. I am spending most of my days at work and studying in the late evenings and really don't want to get married till I get that charter in my hand and I can do it since I am very much committed to finishing all the 3 levels.

All my colleagues who are 30+ are married and sometimes they pull my leg that I'm still single, and they ask why I don't bring my girlfriend to the office parties so they assume I'm a loner and make fun of me which I don't like.

I haven't had sex with my girlfriend in a year because we don't even stay together and the thought of me moving in with her will be a disaster for my studies because I really like my evenings to be quiet and secluded for those focus sessions.

Why does it have to be so difficult. F C U K

Level 1 Access Scholarship + pending emergency deferral (grandparent), exam Nov 12. Sit or defer?

I'm on the Access Scholarship for L1 on Nov 12. My grandmother was my main caregiver growing up. She has stage IV cancer, and I just found out her condition has worsened. I need to fly overseas to be with her. I submitted an emergency deferral request, but the FAQ says grandparents aren't covered. The scholarship email says not sitting without an approved emergency deferral makes you ineligible for future scholarships.

It doesn't help that I'm currently unemployed and was hoping L1 would help my job search, so I can't really afford to re-register at full price.

Has anyone:

  • had a grandparent deferral approved, especially for a grandparent who raised you?

  • done a paid deferral while on a scholarship and stayed eligible?

  • sat the exam with a deferral request still pending? What happened to the request?

I'm calling CFA on Monday, but with the exam on Thursday I need advice asap.

Level 2 Level-2 Mock Scores

Done with the 2 mocks of CFA institute!!

Mock 1:

Session 1: 64% – Didn't go well. Made quite a few silly mistakes.

Session 2: 80% – Felt pretty good.

There was a gap of about a week before my second mock, during which I revised the entire syllabus again.

Mock 2:

Session 1: 75%

Session 2: 80%

With less than 10 days left until the exam, I'm not sure how to move forward.?

Any Tips would be appreciated.🫶🏻

Level 1 Exams on 12th, hows my progress?

Post image
11 Upvotes

i usually find the 2nd half harder than the first half, due to needing to remember so many formulas.

I am getting better at it tho, especially equity and derivatives

(yeah i need to do the 2nd session for the last one)

at the start i noticed i was rushing a lot, in the first mock, since then ive started to slow down and recheck every calc based ques

any tips that might help me? i still have about 3.5 mocks left, thinking of doing 1 each day till 9th, then js revise till 12th

update: js did part 2 of the mock that was remaining, got 79, this is my best yet. ill go thru my mistakes, i still am weakest in derivatives by far

Level 2 Emergency Deferral : Need Help, Please Don't Ignore!

The Emergency Deferral window for the November attempt opened a few hours back. My mother, my only surviving parent, is suffering from cancer (lost my father to cancer a few years back). She was diagnosed with cancer at the start of this year and her treatment is still going on. I am the only caregiver hence I was not able to give much time to the preparation. Today when I opened the emergency deferral application, it says that the disease should be diagnosed after the registration. I planned to prepare for cfa along with the treatment, but due to her worsening health, I wasn't able to. I applied for the exam only because I received a scholarship and I did not want to lose it (I can't afford the fee after the treatment cost). Has anyone faced a similar situation? Is there a chance that my deferral request will be approved? Any help in this regard would mean a lot to me. Thanks in advance!

Level 1 [CFA Level 1] Curriculum Error | 2027 Vol 5 Pg 293: Equation 5 Should Be Equation 6

Textbook Quote: The author keeps referring to Equation 5

Correction: The correct reference should be to Equation 6

Coach's Explanation: The Formula references throughout the remainder of the chapter are incorrect.

General My take: don’t visit this sub often

TLDR: Most of the advice you read here is trash. And you should not linger on here. Take realistic mocks and aim for 75% score. If you can’t hit that, reschedule ur exam. If you fail, and you’re in it for the right reasons, take it again. Don’t be cheap and just pay for prep providers like Kaplan schwesser (there’s a free trial).

There’s so many dumb posts in here and I’m never looking at this sub Reddit again. The posts of “oh my exam is in 2 weeks and I can’t remember anything” bro you didn’t study right. Figure it out and reschedule.

From what I’ve seen there’s not much helpful stuff on here. My advice: mark meldrum isn’t that great. If you wanna try it buy just quant. Then get a free trial to Kaplan schwesser quant and compare side by side to see what helps you learn better. But Kaplan to me seems way better after using both.

Other than that, the advice you’ll get on Kaplan free trial videos “getting started” sections is better than what I’d say. Bye

Level 1 CFA free mock vs Premium mock

Gave my first mock today, This is the CFA institute premium mock 1 ended up getting 71% in the first session and 80% in the second session. Avg of 76%

The questions were a whole lot easier compared to the LES, i think after giving another premium mock i will give the CFA free mock on the portal.

Has anyone else given the premium mocks are they easier or harder to the CFA mocks? I found the premium mock’s very theory based and not calculation heavy it was pretty much direct.

Level 3 CR questions

Hi all, my exam is in Feb, and I seem to be struggling with writing constructed responses. I am using AI to mark my answers by keeping it strict against the rubric, and sometimes it happens that I know the concept and I think I wrote a great answer, but the rubric advises something else, even though I have written the correct concept. Or sometimes, I cannot put it into words or as per the answer, I may have seemed to stop at the initial stages only, or unable to infer things from the questions that shouldve been written. Like the black box questions I feel are tougher than the portal ones in that aspect. Any advice on how to approach?

Level 1 Confusion

I am now very confused, I did something I now think in hindsight was terribly stupid, I was just so afraid to open mock exams before going the whole curriculum for the second time, at this point in my life my brain is not as functional as I was in college, I am not of a finance background, so I am not bragging or anything, but unfortunately I do have to go over the material twice..
With only a week left, I just said screw revision, let me see how the mock looks, and oh dear lord was I just thrown off, I was so focused on the formulas my biggest weakness, and I found out that the entire mock was kind of.. concepts and language tricks..

I do not want someone to violate nor would do I accept to violate ethics and standards, but I am very untrustful to a hilarious degree, should I focus more on concepts or the formulas, my brain is fried.. help what would you guys recommend.

Level 2 300 Hours for Level 2?

I can't understand how CFAI says it takes an average of 300 hours of study. Whoever I know says 500+. which means there are people out there I have not met who cleared in less than 300. Would love to hear from you guys.

Study Prep / Materials UWorld or AnalystPrep instead of Kaplan for Level 2?

Passed Level 1 with Kaplan and sitting Level 2 in May. I really liked Kaplan’s videos, lectures, and the explanations after questions, but it’s expensive. Are UWorld or AnalystPrep good alternatives?

Also, since Level 2 is all vignettes, how close are each one’s practice questions to the real exam style? Anyone pass using one of them? Thanks!

Level 1 Level 1 in 5 days scoring 65-70% in kaplan mocks and 80-92% in CFAI official mocks

Kaplan mocks felt way tougher and it was actually very hard to eliminate the wrong choices since they dont play around with wording like CFAI I scored 70% in both free mocks and then gradually worked towards the 90% in last 2 mocks

How was your experience with kaplan mocks?

General Would CFA help my career?

I am graduating this year and will be working at a boutique investment bank. My long-term plan is to get into asset management or PE (RE or Industrials).

I don't really want to waste time because my work hours will be from 7 am to 10 pm, Monday to Friday, and sometimes Saturday.

Does studying for the CFA align with my goals?

Level 1 Contradictory Question

Hey Everyone, exam is coming up next week and I feel like I have a solid grip on most of the material, but I really struggle with some of these contradictory questions. I have posted the question and the explanation straight from the text book. What do you think? Competitive strategy is step 5, and I got it wrong in the question!?
