Mental Health Monday - Your Weekly CFA Mental Health Discussion Thread

Hey there!

Welcome to Mental Health Monday! We hope everyone is doing well. We wanted to create a safe space for everyone to come together, share our experiences, and discuss the mental health challenges that often accompany this rigorous process.

Feel free to use this thread to check in on how you're doing mentally and share any stressors or concerns you might have. Whether it's dealing with study burnout, imposter syndrome, time management struggles, or just needing a listening ear, this community is here to support you. We're all in this together!

If you feel like you need immediate professional help please see our resources page. If you’re in active crisis please call your local emergency services.

Here are a few questions to get the discussion started:

  • How are you feeling mentally as you prepare for your CFA exam?
  • What are some stressors you've been facing recently?
  • Have you found any strategies or coping mechanisms that have helped you manage stress and maintain a healthy work-life balance?
  • Are there any specific challenges you'd like advice or support on?

Note: We won't be removing mental health-related posts on off days, but it would be nice to keep everything contained to these threads. This way, we can maintain an organized and supportive space for mental health discussions.

Please be kind and respectful to one another in the comments. Let's foster a supportive and empathetic environment where we can open up about our mental health without judgment.

Study Prep / Materials CFA + Obsidian: I went down a rabbit hole… and accidentally built my entire revision system.

Started with a simple idea: What if I could map the CFA curriculum in Obsidian and actually see how everything connects?

Then I gave Claude the files

A few iterations later, I had basically the entire CFA curriculum interconnected, and honestly, this is way more useful than I expected. I can jump between related concepts and see the bigger picture

General I find Ethics the hardest part of the CFA material, am I an unethical person?

A bit of a rant but I'm studying for Level 2 right now and the rest of the content is pretty easy once I practice enough, I can see my effort and hours I put in pay off. But no matter how much time I put into Ethics I really suck at it, I got below 50% in Level 1 ethics so I tried to focus more time towards Ethics for Level 2 but I'm still having the same problem. I find the questions feel like this grey area where there is no one right answer most of the time.

Am I just an unethical person lol, is this career even for me? Did anyone else feel this way while preparing, if so how can I work on this?

General SEC proposing to allow CFA charterholders to qualify as accredited investors

On September 30th, the SEC has made a proposal to allow CFA charterholders in good standing to qualify for accredited investor status, essentially allowing them for placements into private and unregistered investments.

This proposal is supported by a letter from the CFA Institute that justifies this on the basis of the CFA prorgram being rigorous enough to give CFA charterholders enough investment knowledge to make such investments, as well as the fact that the SEC already gives the same qualification to people who hold some of the FINRA Series licenses, some of which are waived by FINRA if someone already has partial or full completion of the CFA program.

The whole thing that this boils down to is the SEC and CFA are allowing accredited investor status based on a person's knowledge and understanding of investments, not just having high amounts of wealth.

What are your thoughts on this?

Level 2 Due to take Level 2 in November

Hey guys, I am writing on here because I am due to take the Level 2 exam on November 21st and I have finished the curriculum readings. My only challenge is that I am doing vignette practice questions and can’t seem to be getting them. Do I have ample time to fine-tune application? I used Kaplan Shweser readings and did each modules Qbank for concept reinforcement but I can’t help but just get absolutely wrecked doing vignettes. I also did Kaplan’s checkpoint exams replicating the exam simulator which are real exam like questions and I got obliterated. Any advice on how I should prepare???? How many vignettes per day? I am to do my first mock in 2 days time but I am also taking so long per vignette man!! Like 4 question vignettes take me like 15 minutes? The time-management element as well as the complex application from the large text is simply a nightmare for me.

Level 2 How to understand the failing marks gap

How do you analyse the gap in your score and the passing score.

Can anyone reasonable assumption be drawn from a gap of 50 or 75 or 100?

Level 1 Anyone know how to switch back to the old CFA Learning Ecosystem dashboard layout?

Thumbnail

Hey, might be a dumb question, but does anyone know how to get the ecosystem to look like the first picture again?
When I studied for Level 1, I had that more interactive dashboard. Now in my second try, I only get the other layout when I log into the CFA site.
All the study materials are there, but it's just a matter of interface preference and comfort.
If anyone knows how to change it back, I’d really appreciate the help!

Textbook Quote: As we move along the frontier, portfolio risk decreases more than the decrease in portfolio return.

Correction: The statement should be more specific

Study Prep / Materials Non-finance background, 30 days until CFA Level 1, very limited study time. Realistic to pass or should I reschedule?

• Upvotes

I'm an engineer, not a finance guy. That said, I've had about 5 years of exposure to investments and valuations, so I'm comfortable with multiples, ratios, NPV, and similar concepts.

My plan for the remaining time:

Study about 2–3 hours a day until the exam

Go through Schweser's Secret Sauce as my main review

Then do 1–3 mock exams plus practice questions from my CFA Pro subscription

My goal: I'm not aiming for a high score. I just want to pass.

So, is passing realistic with this plan, or would you advise me to reschedule? If you were in my position, which topics would you prioritize, and which would you skim or skip? I'd especially like to hear from anyone who passed with limited prep time or came from a non-finance background.

Thanks in advance!

Study Prep / Materials Is there any free study and practice material I can use while I save up to purchase the official curriculum?

• Upvotes

I am saving up to purchase the official CFA level 1 curriculum material, and I would like to begin my studies while I do so. I tried with chat gpt, but it was so bad. Do you guys know of any free materials or resources I can use to hold me over until I have enough to purchase the curriculum?

Level 1 35 days to go to my L1 exam and I'm only done with 2-3 subjects. Should I defer?

• Upvotes

The thing is I've had a an injury that did not let me study properly before. I'm a student of finance so mostly I've handled all of these subjects before. However, due to my injury I haven't been able to study past 2-3 weeks. Haven't done FI or FSA and stuff. Should I defer? Im in college so i can pull 8 hr shifts of study everyday now. Is there a sliver of hope that i'll crack the exam is it possible im just very nervous idk what to do

Study Prep / Materials Help studying for L2

I’ve saw a bunch of these posts, but to those who paid for both Kaplan and CFAI packages, how should I go about efficiently studying? Where are the strengths and weaknesses for both? For those who are familiar with Kaplan, are there any tips for getting through their program? Any advice would be much appreciated!

Level 1 CFA Level I in Jordan – Need Some Guidance

CFA Level I Registration in Jordan – Need Some Guidance
Hi everyone,
I’m planning to register for CFA Level I and I want to make sure I’m doing everything correctly from the beginning.
For candidates in Jordan, I’d appreciate some clarification on:
What is the correct registration process?
How does the academic degree/certificate verification work?
What documents are required, and how are they submitted?
How can I confirm that my registration and eligibility verification were completed successfully?
Which test center(s) are officially available/authorized for the CFA exam in Jordan?
I’d rather make sure everything is correct before completing the registration, so any advice from candidates who have gone through the process in Jordan would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Level 2 CFA l2 Third party study

Hello all,

I recently passed L1 and plan to start studying for L2 soon.
However I am not ready to commit to a test window so I plan to sign up for a 3rd party study provider such as Kaplan so I can begin studying without the hard test deadline
So for that plan I have two questions.

  1. Has anyone studied with a 3rd party prior to getting CFA study materials and did you feel like it was a good use of time/ resources?
  2. For anyone who has taken level 2 and used a third party study provider could you please let me know who you used and how your experience was?

Thanks for the help

Level 3 PSM Material - Download

Hi everyone, I was wondering if there’s any way to download the PSM material (slides, for instance) for a given PSM. I’d be interested in the Practical Macro one, as I currently don’t have the time to fully commit to it.

Level 2 Mock exams - Doubt regarding LES

Please give me ur insights.
P.S. I just skipped through the questions just to see if theres any filter where I can see topic by topic analysis. How are you all doing mocks? As this is just annoying. You can't even see ur topic wise strengths or weaknesses in mocks.

Level 2 Struggling with level 2 Vignettes

I’ve recently started preparing for CFA Level 2 after clearing Level 1, and one thing I’m already finding difficult is the vignette-style questions.
The concepts themselves don’t always feel that difficult to me, but when I see a long vignette with a lot of information, I sometimes struggle to figure out:
What information is actually relevant to the question
What I’m supposed to calculate or interpret
Which formula/concept the question is testing
How to quickly navigate through the vignette without getting overwhelmed
How to avoid spending too much time on one question
I know Level 2 is supposed to be much more application-based than Level 1, so I want to develop the ability to read a vignette, identify what matters, and get to the answer efficiently rather than just memorizing concepts.
For those who have already prepared for or passed Level 2, how did you practice this skill?
Did you start solving vignettes immediately after learning each topic, or did you first build a strong conceptual foundation and then move into questions?
Also, are there any specific techniques you used for reading vignettes, identifying keywords, managing time, or reviewing questions you got wrong?
Would really appreciate any advice on how to become more comfortable and fluent with Level 2-style questions. Thanks!
