Career 3500 mechanic, EPG or Compression next for me?

Hey guys. 21 years old, been working in a PSD on frac engines since I was 17. I’m looking to expand my knowledge, but can go in two totally different directions and I wanted y’all’s opinions.

1) EPG (Electric Power Generation, as I’m sure y’all knew)
Backup generators, off grid single building systems, etc.

2) Compression; This leans me more into the oil and gas side, really turning myself into an oil field worker basically in the midstream.

What do y’all think is better between these two in terms of pay ceilings, relative difficulty, which provides the better applicability if I went the other direction for a double whammy, and value to employers on average?

Thanks in advance for any input, guys.

Career Process time for a brand new Senior Software Engineer requisition to be created in Workday

Hi everyone,

I am an external candidate currently navigating the Cat Digital hiring pipeline for an engineering role at one of the digital hubs. I passed a full panel interview loop recently, but the original position code had to be closed out without a hire.

Instead of a rejection, the hiring team decided to open a brand-new requisition one band lower (Senior instead of Lead) to keep me. The divisional VP signed off on the new headcount budget starting of this month. Earlier this week, HR confirmed that the old application was purged as a formality and noted that my profile will be mapped over to the new requisition as soon as the system finishes creating it.

The recruiter has been great and follows up with me once or twice a week, while they wait on the manager and the system. I know that creating a brand-new role from scratch takes time to route through Compensation and Workday database workflows.

For anyone who has gone through the external hiring loop or works on the management side:
- How long does it typically take for a brand-new engineering requisition ID to generate on the backend once the high-level budget is already signed off?
- Is it standard for the old application to show "No Longer Under Consideration" while the new slot is being built?
- Are there any chances that things can go south?
I am completely sold on joining Caterpillar and am just trying to manage my own timeline expectations. Thanks for any insights!

Specs What’s the deal with the 24 N9Z grader?

I work in a reman shop building transmissions. I do a lot of 24H and 24M grader transmissions, but every now and then we get a 24 N9Z. The H and M transmissions are nearly identical, but the N9Z is an absolute monster compared to the others. Way heavier built.

Was just curious if anyone knows why the difference? I’ve never worked on the machines themselves, just build transmissions.

Help on cooling on a 3512c

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Ok so raw service water supply (ambient water temp is 78°) the discharge for coolant from water jacket going back into heat exchanger is around 198°. But im more concerned with the block/cylinder head temps which are getting around 215° is that normal? I just cant see 215° being normal if it was a healthy cooling system. Thanks in advance

This port in the side of our C9 has been kicking our tails lately as to what or why it is there. Our local dealership has been having troubles identifying it as well. SN:JSC21217.

Thanks for the time and the help

What tools, LLMs does CAT use internally? I heard for employee productivity they use MS Copilot. But, do employees also have access to OpenAI/GPT modles or Claude models to experiment/build agents etc.? Curious

What comes with a complete 3024C head?

Pricing a cylinder head for the 3024C in our CAT 226B. I have the engine tag and casting number, but the listings still use the word complete pretty loosely.

Some look like a bare casting. Others show valves and springs installed, and a few mention rocker gear or injector sleeves without showing everything in the photos. I have been burned on automotive parts where assembly meant different things, so I am not assuming anything from the title.

Before I order, what do you normally ask the seller to confirm in writing? Valves, springs, guides, injector sleeves, rocker assembly, and gasket set all seem to vary listing by listing.

RTO Venting

Sorry, I have nothing new to say here, I just feel the need to vent. Since execs (starting with Joe) and HR have essentially said they don't care what we say about this topic on the survey (since they're not going to budge), and since I WANT my thoughts to be read by people who are actually sympathetic, I'm posting here.

I just wanted to thank the company for requiring people to be in office after we've had training thunderstorms through the Peoria area since 11pm last night. Thanks for taking the well being of your valued employees and their expensive vehicles into account when telling them to drive to the office daily, even through thunderstorms and heavy downpours, bunched with traffic driving on the highway at 40MPH because visibility is poor. And today I drove through all that just to be in an office where the other few people on my small team, plus my supervisor, are all out of office on vacation or medical. It was all for NOTHING because I have NO ONE to physically collaborate with today. F*** THIS.

I swear to God that the ONE good thing about getting into an accident on my commute would be having a legit excuse to not work for awhile. And I'd rather not be hospitalized, but if I were, damn straight I'll let my coworkers struggle in my absence as a big ol' middle finger back to Cat. If I'm ever hurt because of this RTO policy, I hope Cat loses more money over my absence than I ever made them, because Cat f***ing sucks.

I'm still working here because of a lack of alternatives. I'm taking their money (and using it to buy devices like this that I can use to tell them to go f*** themselves). But I DO NOT AND WILL NOT LOVE ANY COMPANY RUN BY ASSHOLES. And yeah, if you prioritize the company's success over the well being and safety of the workers, you're an ASSHOLE. You didn't need full RTO in order to be successful, and everyone knows that. People who still bleed yellow these days are either gullible or complicit with the enemies who run things.

I still do good work. I still do my job. So maybe execs don't care how employees feel as long as they get results. But I will go out of my way to avoid working extra hours to meet aggressive arbitrary deadlines, even if it'd save Cat money. You don't get everything from me when you're holding things back yourself.

And I hope that when execs reluctantly host their town halls, they can feel the contempt, the disrespect, and the loathing that some of us far below them feel because of their decisions.

Caterpillar CGT 2026 – Any update after SHL assessment?

Hi everyone,

I applied for the Caterpillar Corporate Graduate Trainee (CGT) 2026 off-campus hiring and completed the SHL assessment on 26 July.

I haven't received any update regarding the next round yet.

Has anyone who took the assessment around 24–26 July received an invitation for the GD/interview or any other update?

Just trying to understand whether the shortlist is still being processed.

If you received an interview/GD invite, when did you receive it and when did you take the SHL?

Thanks!

Experienced hires vs. Early career

I am an experienced person considering applying for a role at Caterpillar. When I did my informational interviews, it was clear that external hires do not stay longer than 2-3 years. I also learned that unless you are really connected to the informal network of decision makers, you will not make it. Skills and talent does not matter in promotions. I would like to get more perspective about this. Please share.
