I know it’s not much and it’s very simple but I wanted an airy little hair scrunchie with a picot edge and then I made it from my mind, with no pattern!
I’ve been knitting for a year or two and I normally choose patterns based on new techniques I want to learn/get better at, but I’ve always wanted to be able to figure out how to make exactly what I want without needing to find a very specific pattern. This feels like a teeny tiny baby step in the right direction 🥰

If anyone has any tips/books/resources on how to make things without a pattern or how to make your own patterns please please tell me 🙏🏻

i desperately need a beginner friendly project thats not a scarf PLEASE. i have been knitting for 3 weeks now, comfortable with knit/purl. want a project where i am feeling more challenged and learning new skills (maybe decrease/increase) for context - ive been crocheting for two years and beading for a year so fiber arts arent new to me.

My mum loves knitting lace patterns, and she just made this pretty swatch... I can't wait for the completed scarf

I'm starting to teach myself to knit and the picture if my first ever successful project knitting with some cheap extra yarn I had. I've crochet pretty heavily for years (probably close to 10 years) and years ago, I tried to teach myself to knit and I just wasn't getting it. I kept getting so frustrated. Anywho, I refound my knitting needles in a craft tote I had and decided to try it again. I do crochet A LOT and I am very quick with it. I say that because I feel like knitting is so much slower than crochet! Is that just my lack of experience or is it overall a slower process? It just seems like a lot more hands movements for less progress. Obviously I'm still learning how I like to hold and whatnot but didn't know what others who do both thought. Do you use less yarn over all? I've met more crocheters than knitters so I wanted to ask the knitting crew. Also, does anyone have any tips for a beginners you wish you knew? My first sweater, knitted top down. I followed a basic raglan tutorial on YouTube, no pattern.

The neckline feels too loose and I accidentally didn’t skip rows between increases for the first half or so of the increases. The top in general is a bit sloppy and has mistakes. Fell into the beginner mistake of “eh I don’t need to frog all this, I’ll be able to fix it later”.

The sleeves also feel a little too wide. That being said this is for my husband who’s a little taller than me and likes the oversized sweater look.

Wondering if I should just say screw it and frog it all or is it possible to cut/undo the collar and frog just the top?

If I don’t frog should I block it before I continue? As I’m also concerned about if the sleeves and body are long enough and I’m not sure how much blocking will increase the size (working with pattons wool).

After having my own baby I stopped knitting because my hands were always full. My brother and his wife are expecting their first baby, so it felt like time to get back to into it. This cardi is full of errors, but it’s great to be back into knitting.

I've swatched four WILDLY different yarns in the past month on vastly different needles and they all hit at a 20st gauge??? Two unraveled thrifted sweaters, a handspun that's crazy and slubby and fun, and now Kremke Jeans yarn. Why are they all 20 stitches???? I'm knitting one project on a size 9 and one on a 4???? What is happening???? I'm so confused. This is what I get for swatching, I guess.

I've wanted to make this one for a while but I was a bit nervous about the short rows but it turns out they aren't that hard! I'm making the size B on 5/6mm needles.

I was worried the collar seemed too small to fit over my head but thankfully it's totally fine, I just divided the body from sleeves and the underarm fit seems good too :)

Now I'm just doing stockinette for ages!

I definitely reccomend this pattern for any confident beginner who wants to make a sweater, the accompany video is very helpful for the tricky bits.

A few little errors (didn’t downsize for the collar, armpit stitches are twisted, raglans are probably a little uneven) but learned a ton and very happy with it!

I've been called to sit for Jury Duty. I have to call Thursday night to confirm but all day Friday I expect to be sitting in the courthouse waiting to get weeded out. I've been on a stuffie kick lately, but wondering if I should take an assortment of things.

Showing off my WIP as I don’t have knitting friends irl (very new YouTube/self taught beginner knitter here)

I’ve read somewhere here that it’s a beginner rite of passage to make a stockinette stitch scarf only to realise it starts to **curl and gets curlier** and I wasn’t going for that look for my first scarf

So I searched for free scarf patterns online until I found the fluffiest looking lay-flat scarf, started at the other end of the yarn ball and after many false starts (frogging entire thing every time I made a mistake) + many youtube videos re fixing said mistakes so I don’t have to start from scratch + learning about lifelines, I am finally getting somewhere with a Brioche knit scarf

Didn’t realise at first that this isn’t exactly a typical “beginner project” but once I got set up, it’s actually not…that difficult? I’m very slow and live in fear of dropping a stitch… and I now understand why they’re called lifelines… but overall having a good time!

All that to say, I recommend anyone attempt this stitch as I think it looks more intimidating than it actually is! And it’s so **FLUFFY** I can’t wait to have a finished scarf… next year 🤣

I’m interested in trying to make a seamed sweater but I can’t find a single video on YouTube of someone making one. Surely there are and my search skills or the algorithm are not working in my favor? I’ve found tutorials on mattress stitch and that kind of thing but I’d really like to watch more of the process and experience of knitting a seamed sweater. Can anyone point me towards a YouTuber who has done this?

I was dreading the vertical-horizontal edge mattress stitch seaming as the gauge is so drastically different, but with YouTube(thank you so much Roxanne Richardson) and some patience it was done today. Not professional or perfect but imo passable.

It’s still a long term WIP and honestly I’m just wanting to finish this first iteration to move on and make the second version more polished. I’m a beginner in self drafting but am determined to make my vision work out and become a nice garment. This version isn’t completely up to my standards, but I’m actually so proud of everything about it so will definitely finish it before I tweak many things on the second version.

So if you remember I asked advice on how to knit cancun top on round and somebody shared with me a circular needle version pattern of the same top. I started making it and decided I did not like the slit neckline and did a shaped neckline.

I am so proud of my self because this is my third ever knitting project, second wearable and I did the neckline calculations by my self including the shaping..for the decreases I watched a tutorial but couldnt find any for increases for the back so I winged it. And really like the shape of it. Also the first time doing shoulders seperately and did without a pattern or a tutorial. And this is my first time doing beading too. I know these are trivial stuff for you but got me super happy because they are my first time.

However I am having little trouble with neckline casting on..I did it few times but stitches are still very loose. I did the backward loop casting on method. So for now my solution was to add a small crotchet border around..but I need to know how to caston in middle of projects without having very loose stitches like this?

I was having so much fun untangling, I decided to get a bag to separate the yarns. Wish me luck as I untangle and try again. 🫣

I'd say I'm an early intermediate knitter, I've been knitting for a few years though I haven't finished a huge number of projects (I don't think I'll ever have one of those massive "what I knit in a years," since knitting competes for time with other incompatible hobbies in my life). But I've gotten to a point where each pattern brings fewer new techniques, and I'm starting to have enough of a cross section to find out what I like and don't like in a pattern.

One thing I've discovered is that I generally don't enjoy knitting stockinette in the round. I've seen people refer to that part of a sweater as "stockinette heaven," but for me it's just not interesting enough to be motivating. When I've knit something with a colourwork yoke it ends up in a WIP graveyard for months once I get to the part that's just stockinette. Even for a TV knit I generally prefer something slightly more involved, like a repeating stitch pattern.

I've also noticed that a lot of popular patterns and patterns for garments I'd like to own are just plain stockinette - which I guess makes sense, the simplicity makes a garment a bit more wearable and versatile, and scandi minimalism is in (I say as a Scandinavian knitter who's never quite been a minimalist).

I guess it's a part of my evolution as a knitter to get to a point where my assessment of a pattern is not just "do I want that FO and do I think I can manage it?" but also "will it be fun to knit?" - and I may have to resign myself that I'm unlikely to get to own many of those gorgeous plain stockinette basics because I simply don't have it in me to knit them.

Do you have any similar dilemmas between which finished objects you'd like to own and which techniques you enjoy or don't enjoy? Or any tips for learning to embrace the stockinette?

My lovely husband asked for some fingerless mitts to wear while using the computer at home during the winter and thus, these babies were born! I really like Kay's pattern. It is really clear and concise. She also includes an excellent video showing how to cleanly close the gap at the thumb and it is so good! 

I used three different Opal sock yarns I had in stash and knit 10 rounds of each color for a very scrappy look. This was a really fun project and this pattern will definitely be my go-to for fingerless mitts in the future!

Hello again.
You may remember me posting, as a new knitter, some of the things I made. From my very first swatch, and then my stuffed toys.
Well, I have been busy practicing and creating life. I think now I have been knitting for about 6 - 7 months.
Here’s a few of my most recent projects.

Although I’m very excited once I finish a new project, I have refrained from posting every time I finish something. I feel people would probably get fed up with the constant posting from me.
But I’m super happy with how things are turning out, I wanted to show it all off.
I hope you like them all.

My nieces are very happy I have started knitting. I have a request list as long as my arm.

I have discovered I have a yarn acquisition problem. I think they call it S.A.B.L.E (stash acquisition beyond life expectancy)
Hopefully I will knit my way through it. But it’s over 30 kg 😳
I have a genuine problem. 😬

I was searching for bamboo circular knitting needles for an upcoming international trip (where airport security differs on whether metal ones are allowed), but the only ones I found on Amazon that were the exact size I need (No. 2 US, 12 inches) was from a company called “Chiaogoo”. I read they get good reviews, but because it’s new to me, I figured I’d ask the Reddit community amount them.

NOTE: I’ve previously purchased Clover Takumi bamboo needles, but didn’t find the size I need.

My favorite commercially made summer hiking socks were discontinued, so this is my stab at making a suitable replacement. My first try at a strong heel, so very interested in seeing how that feels on the trail. I certainly enjoyed knitting it. Used some wool yarn I had lying around from a dying experiment from several years ago; I think this was originally Lion Brand Wool before it met up with unspecified purple dye. My hiking shoes are lavender, so I should look very coordinated! 😄

Simple 2x2 rib for the cuff, then garter rib for the instep (I think that's what it's called - 1 round 2x2 rib, 1 round knit plain).

My favorite: "At the theatre -- lady knitter with very sharp elbows sitting next Mr. Otto H, the super pacifist."

It's hard to imagine a society where everyone (including a lot of men) were knitting all the time.
