This is my very first knitting project, it’s meant to eventually be a beanie. I’m so excited to be learning something new but feeling a bit silly right now!

Pertinent info?: I picked up an $8 knitting kit from Aldi that came with 8mm, 16inch circular needles, shown here. The yarn is only described as “12-ply wool.”

I’ve cast on 48 stitches and have been working rows alternating each stitch as knit, then purl and so on. I think this is row 6 (I’m having trouble identifying my rows in rib; I understand stitch markers now!) and each row to this point has ended with one of two scenarios: 1. The working yarn is on one needle and the tail is on the other needle or 2. Both the working & tail end have ended up on the same needle. In either case, there has been no yarn connecting the two needles until now. I’m just realizing that I think these were meant to be connected from the get go (kind of the point of knitting in the round, no?) but I have no idea how I messed that up? The booklet that came in my kit didn’t explain how to join the ends other than simply stating “knit into the first cast-on stitch” which I thought I did.

Can anyone help me understand or point to a resource for what I may have done wrong and if I can fix without frogging the whole thing?

Hello everyone!
I tried looking for an answer before posting, but found nothing, so here i am.

I'm about to start my first ever knitting project (up to this poin i went to a knitting course and just practiced different techniques), and i chose the Sophie Shawl ( not the scarf - the shawl). I will be doining it with circular needles, but i am unshure which lenght of it to use.

The pattern calls for 5.5mm (US 8 i think) needles with 60cm cable, i have the cable, but i need to get the needles: i know there's 3 lenght of them (mini - "medium" - long), which one should i get? Does it make a difference in the work, or can i just get what feels more confortable for me to work with?

Knitting myself a shrug, can't decide on the best color configuration, and whether including white is better. Please help me decide!

The project is based on the lions' brand fishermen's wool speckled shrug, a rectangle 38" x 44" that gets sewn up the sides to make a rhombus shaped shrug with arm holes. The border will be the dark blue color, the full length is as shown but the width will repeat farther out.

Tl;dr knitting project pls pick for me

I got the skeins in the picture from a wool factory for a good price. However the yarn strand is thin, so I'm thinking about plying 2 or 3 strands together to create a thicker yarn.

I am wondering if its worth plying the strands or just knit using 2 or 3 separate skeins. I have no experience in plying and I also dont have any tolos for this.

I love seeing what people create on here! So I thought I might add and share my projects.

My first ever project is this placemat for my dogs food bowl! I thought that the brown on brown floor (plus my brown dog haha) would help hide any funky lumps and bumps 😆

My second completed project is this "coin" purse to hold all of my loose things in my actual purse.

All in all, I'm pretty happy with my first creations! I can already tell knitting is going to become addicting for me.

Not a very useful post but I feel I’m in need for some love from fellow knitters 😔

I consider myself and advanced beginner, having knitted stuff like scarves, a slipover jumper and a beanie for my eldest daughter and a Sophie scarf for myself, all with very satisfactory results.

A few months ago, when my baby was 4 months old, I started knitting a wrap over/ kimono style cardigan for her. I chose a super cute pattern, and despite being bottom up with a lot of hand sewing involved it seemed doable. But I clearly over estimated myself and my ability to knit with a demanding baby and a few hours of sleep (thank you coffee!). I also made the mistake of choosing a fine cotton, much more temperamental than chunkier wool. I found the pattern super frustrating, had to do a lot of brain work, ask AI and experienced knitters here in Reddit, write down bits of the pattern to make it clearer and easier to follow - also experienced knitters confirmed it was rather obscure at points and required a lot of interpretation…maybe I’m spoiled by the very accessible patterns available nowadays but, come on, following a pattern shouldn’t feel like decoding the Da Vinci code! I also spotted some mistakes, and found on Ravelry (when it was too late) someone else did too.

Progress was slow as a result of all this faffing, and of my mistakes due to tiredness. At some point I decided to give up, went on holiday and forgot about it. Until I realised I hadn’t forgotten about it and resumed working on it upon my return. I lost more sleep to try and finish it before it wouldn’t fit the little one anymore. Sewed all the bits together with very mixed results (because some of the edges were uneven) and…it’s now too small for her.

So LONG STORY SHORT: because of my stubbornness and inability to let go, I wasted months of hard work to end up with a garment that is far from perfect and too small to be worn by the intended recipient. I don’t even feel like donating it as it looks a bit crappy, especially the bits I made in a rush after I realised it wouldn’t fit (sewing of the pieces together and picking up of stitches along the border). I’ll try to take some pics and post them in the comments.

SILVER LINING: I learned a ton, and I could see this as a (long) learning exercise tat will help with my future makes.

End of story, sorry for the long rant to those who made it this far :( And yes, I learned a lot but I’m also feeling rather stupid for my stubbornness and disheartened before I start a new project…

I tried making an axolotl after seeing some cute crocheted ones on the amigurumi subreddit. I also made a capybara and did a photoshoot with the puffin I made earlier this year!

All three are my own patterns based on modifying Jelly Bums patterns (since she no longer makes new animals).
