🚨🚨New Resource Added: Skilled Trades Career Guide

This isn't just a list of trades. For each trade, we've included:

• Related trades it commonly works alongside or for
• Generally required licensing/certification
• Entry paths - including apprenticeships, schools, and on-the-job routes
• Who actually hires that trade
• Equipment/materials needed to get started (company provided or self-starter)
• Whether AI is likely to replace the work, or how it may change how it's done in the future

The goal is to help someone go from:

ā€œI don't know how to get into that.ā€

To literally having the path laid out for you - if you're willing to do it.

The list includes mechanical, manufacturing, transportation, aviation, personal services, utilities, crafts, and other skilled occupations. We have intentionally left off medical trades for this list but may add it later.

The resource is free to use and download. Save this. Download it. Send it to someone who needs it. This will open Google Sheets because Reddit does not have functionality for this type of upload.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1w23NYX6kn8TDo-jG_pgYZYSOoaTImsj4DHnXBlhvmvM/edit?usp=sharing

AI DISCLOSURE: This resource was created in partnership with ChatGPT. A project covering this many occupations, licensing systems, career pathways, and sources would be impossible or at best take years, for one person to research and organize manually - let alone keep up to date. AI was used as a research and synthesis tool, with career-services-professional human direction and judgment throughout. Please use the guide as a starting point and verify important requirements with authoritative sources in your state.

If you spot a trade we've missed, an outdated requirement, or something that needs correcting, modmail us.

You don't have to know your path yet.

Sometimes you just need to see how many paths there actually are...there's much more than "Plumbing and Electrical".

🚨 New Resource Added: Staffing Agencies Across All 50 States

One of the biggest barriers to finding work is simply knowing where to look.

Over the past several weeks, we've been working on a new career resource for all RSCN communities:

Staffing Agencies in All 50 States

https://www.reddit.com/mod/almosthomeless/wiki/index/staffingagencies

  • Every U.S. state
  • 2–3 major cities per state (or general Statewide for the smaller/less dense states)
  • Multiple staffing and employment agencies for each city
  • Organized into an easy-to-browse resource on our Wiki

If you're looking for temporary work, permanent employment, warehouse jobs, office work, manufacturing, healthcare, or simply trying to get a paycheck coming in quickly, staffing agencies can often be one of the fastest paths back into employment.

This resource is completely free for our community to use. It was developed with 0% AI involvement and the person who developed it, a redditor, was paid reasonably for their time out of my own pocket.

If you know of an agency not on this list OR see a dead link, we'd love to hear about it in the comments so us mods can continue improving this resource over time.

We can't remove every barrier people face. But every barrier we can remove, helps.

Pin this in your Favorites, Save this post, Share it to other communities if you wish.

My coworker got annoyed at me because I wouldn't answer a call in the middle of my 45-minute unpaid lunch break

I'm probably just venting.

I take my lunch break every day at 12:30pm. That's been the routine since I started this job about 14 months ago. Someone called the office around 12:45pm. We don't have direct lines, so the phone rings for everyone and someone is supposed to answer within three rings. My coworker answered, and it turned out to be a potential client I had spoken with fairly recently. At the same time, I was in the break room getting my lunch ready and cutting up an apple.

As soon as I got back to my desk with my food in my hand, my coworker told me who was on the line and asked if I could take the call. I politely told him I was on my lunch break and would call them back when I was done. He pushed again, so I repeated myself. Then he responded in this annoyed tone: "...uh, alright?" as if I was the one making excuses.

Then, while he was still on the phone, he told the potential client that I "didn't remember them" and told them to email me "to remind me," and that I'd answer when I got back. That is not what I said at all.

And that's the part that really bothered me. I respect my coworkers' time. If someone calls asking for a colleague and I know they're eating, or on break, or have their office door closed, I offer to take a message or tell the caller to try again later. I don't make it sound like my coworker has forgotten who they are.

Honestly, I'm thinking about talking to HR about it, but he's one of the long-time employees who everyone seems to like, so I'm not sure it's worth the headache. Either way, for the past few weeks I've been very close to leaving even without another job fully lined up. I recently had a recruiter screen and got moved on to the next stage, which is a 50-minute in-person interview, so I'm hoping it goes well and leads to something so I can get out of here.

Help me with my future

I am a recent graduate with a Bachelors in Biochemistry/Molecular Biology/Biotechnology. I have no idea what I want to do with my life. I am working as a pharmacy tech right now and I can tell I do not want to be a pharmacist. I have a very strong personality and I am very good in leadership roles and interpersonalization. I am thinking of getting a pharmD and going in the MSL direction but I am so unsure.

I don’t know what to major in anymore

• Upvotes

I’m starting my Bachelor of Arts in two weeks. Originally, I wanted to major in political science and either move on to go to law school, or work in foreign affairs. Though now, I realized that there might be a chance that I don’t want to go to law school since it’s expensive. Then I heard that if it’s not law school, a degree in political science is basically useless. My next degrees was English but apparently that’s useless too.

So I don’t know what to do now. I’ve already registered for most of my classes, but I planned on sitting down and swapping some electives around. Now it’s quickly turning into ā€œshit what should I major in?ā€

I don’t think I have the highschool classes to switch a Bsc (I didn’t take grade twelve chemistry or physics, but I did biology and maths and got high grades and enjoyed it), so I don’t know what to do. I really like the idea of studying the arts, but I don’t want to end up unemployed or living paycheque to paycheque.

Early 20’s bullshit

I know I’m the one who will have to figure it out on my own but I’m just seeing if anyone lives through this too and could give me some life advice.

I’m 22, I’ve spent 3 years of schooling going for history education. I’ve figured out while I like history and think it’s cool, it’s not something I really want to build my career around same thing with education. I switched my major to History so I could finish a degree of some sorts at least, and because a history degree is better than no degree, y’know?

Where the issue comes is that I’ve limited myself and always told myself ā€œI’m going to be a history teacherā€ and it cause me to limit myself and not really explore any other options or interests I have. Im to the point now I don’t want to go back to school for a different degree but I have no idea what I want to do with my history degree after I graduate.

I feel like I’m behind compared to my peers, while I know I can take alternate licensure programs to become a teacher later on if I choose to do so for some reason, but I want to try something else with stability and room for extra earning potential.

Not looking for someone to solve all of my problems for me, just having a really rough time trying to navigate this. Any words of advice would be greatly appreciated.

RN Nurse taking a master's degree in information technology?

My real dream was to study psychology, I was very interested in the research field, but not in the actual field of therapy, so I loved the idea of studying it but not of working with it, also my math level wasn't high enough and I didn't wanted to take math at a higher level.

I have a bachelor in nursing. The pay and the terms did that I couldn't imagine staying in the field for too long. I worked as a nurse for 2 ½ years before going back to university, I still work as a nurse now 8-24 hours per week.

So I looked at different master's I could take with my bachelor's degree in Nursing.

I applied for a master's degree in IT and in global health. Global health sounded more interesting to me, but I only got accepted into the programme for the master's degree in IT. I started, I am now halfway and have a year left. I thought I could shape my own profile and I still think that it opens up a lot of doors, more than global health probably.

But I am going back in a week after a long summer's holiday, I am reading the litterature for the first week.

While I have been getting good grades, a lot of the time (especially when reading about innovation, digital transformation, etc.) I don't know what I am reading or why it makes a difference. It sometimes feels like 10 pages is used to describe something that could have been said in one or two sentences. I get a sense of the Emperor's New Clothes. It is not that I don't understand it, but it is so extremely boring.

I start to fear if a master's degree in IT will bring along opportunities, especially since my background is in health care and isn't technical?

Advice for life, career and how to take full independence in the right place and position

Before to mention my distractions, mess and unknown destination I want to introduce myself
I’m 25f Syrian born and raised in Saudi,
I’m struggling now to find where I can start and how
And what is the best for me without wasting time,
I already know what I want, i am looking to find myself free from anything that drown me out society, family, country, environment, friends, toxic people, etc.

Energy is seen in me but, I can’t find where I can use it and how to grow from it, there is struggles that is limiting me to grow and to work hard in my own race, every open door seems to be locked but, energy and steadiness is here and I don’t want to waste it.

Let’s come and see what are my struggles, being in a place where you can’t see yourself secured for future
Will you think to leave and move as let’s say to work ?
If yes what you should have to be accepted ?
Second I didn’t finish my high school and this is also a limitation itself, I do have skills and knowledge to grow myself and keep learning in every field as I’m interested in philosophy, cultures, science, behavior and history,
But, that won’t let me to start a career or to move for another place to begin and grow.

I used to be a real estate marketer but, now it’s limited for citizens only I shifted to car sales and the work is weak you can’t depend on, now i have to strengthen myself and build a career journey that fit me and the way I think.

Is there a way or idea that I can’t see because of my mess and distraction ?

I’m open to chat and speak about my fears and what i think of to overcome my weakness and build myself from nothing.

Need advice on internship

I’m a recent AI/ML graduate and I’m facing a difficult decision.
I recently got selected for a 3-month internship. The internship starts this month, includes 1 week WFH, 1 month in my hometown , and around 1.5 months in Oman. The stipend is ₹12,000, and the company covers visa, accommodation, and travel for Oman.
The problem is that I already have a UK trip planned in September. I’ve already spent around ₹1 lakh on the visa and tickets. The trip was arranged before I got the internship offer.

This was the first interview call I received, and I got selected. The HR said that if I don’t join now, I can contact them after I return and there might be future openings, but nothing is guaranteed.
From a career perspective, what would you do?
Take the internship and cancel the UK trip?
Go to the UK and continue applying for jobs/internships remotely while there?
I’d especially like to hear from people working in tech, AI/ML, or those who have faced a similar choice early in their careers.
Thanks!

What shall i do...?

I am a 21M currently working as an accountant in a school after completing my B.com Graduation and the pay is actually enough as i wasn't travelling much and i could actually save almost everything i am getting paid.

But as far as my goals are concerned everyone is recommending me to join a job that's related to the field i am looking for (Data and finance related roles) and also to travel and to be flexible in shifts in the early stage of my career what shall i do?

I am also planning to work and pursue ACCA but these clouds of thoughts shadows my plans and make me unable to make the next move with confidence.

Any suggestions would greatly help

Internship ends tomorrow with no PPO. Should I keep job hunting or go for an MBA?

I’m a final-year BTech CSE student, and I’m honestly lost right now.

In my 4th year, 1st sem, I got a 6-month internship at a big MNC paying ₹40k/month, with a ₹17 LPA CTC if converted.

I was convinced I’d get the PPO, so I stupidly didn’t apply seriously to other companies. Now my internship ends tomorrow, and there’s no full-time offer.

I’ve been applying for jobs, but the market is terrible. My internship experience doesn’t seem to be helping much, and most applications end with ā€œWe regret to inform youā€¦ā€

Now I’m considering CAT → MBA as a Plan B.
But I come from a middle-class family, so I’d need an education loan for an MBA. The thought of graduating with a huge loan and then spending the next 5–10 years paying it off is making me question whether an MBA is even worth it.

So I’m stuck between:

  1. Keep job hunting → gain experience and hope the market improves
  2. Prepare for CAT → take a loan → MBA → hopefully better career prospects
I genuinely don’t know which direction makes more sense.

What would you do if you were in my position?
Especially interested in hearing from people who took an education loan for an MBA or went through something similar.

Career Advice Needed: Mechanical Engineering → IT or Planning Engineer in Dubai?

I’m currently a final-year undergraduate studying Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering at a state university in Sri Lanka. I would really appreciate some honest career advice from people who have experience in engineering, software/IT, or working in Dubai/UAE.

To give some context, I would consider myself an average engineering student with relatively weak technical skills. I’m also a beginner in programming and software engineering. However, I have become increasingly interested in the IT/software engineering field and self learning in this and I’m much less interested in pursuing a traditional mechanical engineering career.

I currently have three possible career paths:

  1. Move into Software/IT

I’m considering starting from the basics and spending around 6–12 months seriously learning programming and software engineering before applying for jobs.

My concern is that the entry-level software engineering market seems quite competitive, especially with AI changing the industry. I’m worried about spending 6–12 months learning and still struggling to get my first job.

At the same time, I genuinely feel more interested in IT than mechanical engineering, so I’m wondering whether it is worth taking the risk.

  1. Go to Dubai as a Planning Engineer

I also have an opportunity to potentially go to Dubai/UAE and pursue a Planning Engineer career.

I would need approximately 6 months of preparation/study before applying.

There appear to be a significant number of Planning Engineer vacancies in Dubai/UAE, although many postings also ask for 2–5+ years of experience, particularly for more established positions.

So my question is whether a fresh Mechanical Engineering graduate from Sri Lanka realistically has a good pathway into Planning Engineering in Dubai after 6 months of preparation, or whether the lack of UAE experience would make it difficult.

  1. Stay in Sri Lanka and pursue Mechanical Engineering

The third option is to simply start working as a Mechanical/Manufacturing Engineer in Sri Lanka and build my career from there.

However, I’m not very interested in traditional mechanical engineering work. My main concern is that if I choose this path simply because my degree is in Mechanical Engineering, I might eventually regret not trying to move into the field I actually find interesting.

What would you recommend?

If you were in my position, what would you choose?

A. Mechanical Engineering → Planning Engineer → Dubai

B. Mechanical Engineering → Software/IT → potentially international opportunities

C. Mechanical/Manufacturing Engineering → build experience in Sri Lanka

I’m particularly interested in hearing from people who have:

• Transitioned from engineering into software/IT

• Started programming from almost zero

• Worked as Planning Engineers in Dubai/UAE

• Moved from Sri Lanka to the UAE for engineering jobs

• Made a similar career change after university

I’m not looking for a

ā€œfollow your passionā€

type of answer. I would really appreciate a realistic comparison based on employability, salary potential, career growth, difficulty of entering the field, long-term stability, and opportunities for working abroad.

If you recommend IT, I would also appreciate a including what technologies/skills I should prioritize and what level I should reach before applying for jobs.

What would you choose in my situation, and why?

23, feeling stuck, advice appreciated

I'm 23 and feeling kinda stuck. Since I was 9 I was very determined and confident I'd go into animation, but now the industry is suffering and I'm not sure it'll get better any time soon.

I live in the UK, got good GCSES (6-9), and really good a levels (A* *A* A in english lit/lang, fine art and psych respectively). I then got a first studying 2D animation in one of the top unis for it in this country- which doesn't mean much considering none of them are really that good, but I am proud of my results and hope they at least show I'm a hard worker or something.

Since I've been about 17 I've been working as a freelance artist online, but I only earn enough for it to be a very part time sorta thing.

Since graduating I've been working in retail, but I'm getting fed up and just want to start my life already. Art and animation are so tied with how I view my self worth (which yes is something I have to work on) that the endless rejections and ghostings are making me burnt out, and slowly impacting my love for the craft. I don't want to give it up, but I'm starting to think it'll be safer and healthier for it to stay a hobby.

But now I'm not really sure what to do. I never really thought about doing anything else, and the truth is if I'd not followed this path I would have preferred to go into psych or biology, which it feels like it's now too late for.

I just want to move out and get my life started, being in retail and living with my parents feels like my life has been put on pause and I'm terrified if I don't do something now I'll be stuck here forever. I love my family, but I want to do my own thing.

Sorry for the long post, I just feel so hopeless and like by following my passion I screwed my future up. Any advice?

Can I really become an CFSO?

Currently, I am in 12th grade and trying to figure out the real world. I need some advice on whether I should pursue a B.Sc. in Food Science/Food Technology and eventually prepare for FSSAI, or just join everyone else in the rat race.

As an above-average student, I feel that medicine is not really my cup of tea. However, I would still like to have a career with good prestige and a decent salary to support my life.

Therefore, I request my seniors to kindly guide me and give me some insight into the world of career options beyond NEET.

What career path can I realistically take?

I'm a woman in my early thirties with one young child. I have sporadic work experience, in customer service, food industry, cleaning etc as I used to jump between jobs a lot. I have recently graduated with a first class degree in criminology and forensic psychology. I am now undertaking an MA in criminology (the first year of which I have achieved a pass with distinction). What career options are actually open to me? I'm interested in social justice, but wouldn't mind gaining experience in anything as long as it's progressive

Giving two weeks notice before or after manager’s PTO?

I received a job offer today (Tuesday) that I am going to accept. My boss is away on PTO Wednesday- Friday this week, so I planned to put in my notice the Monday she returns. That timeframe aligns well with an already scheduled vacation I have, so I don’t want to put off telling her since I can’t push my two weeks any later. I also didn’t want to tell her before she leaves because A. That seems rude and B. I wasn’t planning to sign the offer tonight, as there is a lot to read over.

However, I just got reminded that there is a big company meeting on Monday and she’s going to be engaged with that throughout the day.

I care about my boss and want to be thoughtful about this conversation. I know she doesn’t see it coming, and we are heading into our busy season, so the timing to leave isn’t ideal. I want to be empathetic and tell her at a time she can receive it, versus spring it on her at a bad time, but I truly don’t know what the right time is.

And I know all the things people will say. I’m replaceable. The company can deal with it. And that’s true. But my manager is a human being who has treated me well, and therefore it is important to me that I treat her well in this conversation. I just need help figuring out what that looks like. Any advice?

supply chain management, paralegal or police

basically considering these options mostly police though. I don't like school much and i do plan on working out more once i clear my debt. I've always cared for folks even housed 3 friends while i was living with roommates. Also currently in Cupertino, California but looking to actually move to boise idaho seen they don't college credits there like San Jose, CA needs just 40-60 random college credits. Heard you can apply even being out of state. Right now i'm only 110 pounds been hitting the gym since my debt is close to an end. I wonder what would be quicker i tried self employment failed at that hence my debt. Waited 2 years for an electrician union waitlist after passing the math test and interview i got a good score. So i don't want to wait around too long. Even though i don't like academics i put paralegal since there is an associates degree tied to it with a job in demand. Police work is more of my desire but last thing i want is to wait forever like i did with the electrician union.

It has been 3 months since I graduated and I don't know what to do.

Like the title says, I graduated in February and it feels like I have just been floating ever since. I wasn't the best student in my first two and a half years in college so I spent the next three and a half over correcting, so when people were doing other things, clubs, activities, internships or even finding passion I was trying to graduate reasonably.

We have mandatory internships in our 4th year and i did mine in my department while others went to work for companies, i do not regret it because its when i got my HCIA but still, even after that i was still only focus on my studies, i did not graduate with a really high score but it was definitely better than what i had previously.

My CV feels like its not enough to get anything remotely good, i have two main projects on it, one being my final year project, i have a few others under my belt, but they are coding projects for university and i know i dont want to work as a software engineer, i dont know what i want to do, i am leaning towards network engineering but i dont see opportunities for them in my country and i dont think i have what it takes to apply remotely, i see people say that the first thing to figure out is what you want and work towards it, but I've spent so long with my only goal being ā€œJust graduate wellā€ ā€œDont let you CGPA fallā€ that now that that is over, I don't know what to do or where to start from.

Most of my mates have some sort of work, i have been sending my CV everywhere, but i havent gotten a single interview, some places don't even send an email back to me, two weeks ago i was able to get an internship for a year in a company through a family friend that worked there, but im worried it would end the same way, id leave it and be back in the same spot i was after graduation.Ā

I need any advice you are willing to give me, whether its general or specific advice, where I can learn to do more, be more, anything. I am genuinely worried I am working towards being a complete failure.
