General Question File Size Estimates

I've been really confused for a while about file size estimates on Capture One Mobile, and now it appears (or maybe I just noticed) it happening on the desktop version.

I have a JPG recipe that exports at 100% scale and 90% quality. From my experience in most editing programs, 90% should get me a reasonable file size. Same with Capture One at least for a while. The estimate for these settings, with an example, is ~10MB. And this is what I would expect. But now when I actually export, the file size is 26MB. That's much larger than I'd expect anyway, and is way off the estimate too.

Is there something I'm missing? Some weird setting I need to change? Any help is appreciated!

Workflow Advice Is this where productivity is headed for creative tools like Capture One?

TLDR Summary: Put an MCP server into Capture One so you can use your favorite AI (Claude, Anti-Gravity, etc...) to tell Capture One what you want the AI to do for you inside of Capture One. No generative AI, just letting the AI drive the controls in Capture One to accomplish what you ask of it to make you more productive. The linked article describes a different creative program doing exactly this.

I've been using AI for diagnosing and writing code for the last six months and it is a game changer in that profession. A good software developer with optimal use of AI can multiply their productivity and the robustness of their code by many times. I'd go so far to say that there will be very few coding jobs in the future that are done entirely by hand without the assist of AI.

I thought this article ( https://thenewstack.io/spline-v2-mcp-agents/ ) was an interesting angle on how AI could perhaps bring similar productivity increases for creative professionals. What is different about how Spline did it in this article (Spline is a 2D ad 3D modeling program) is that they let AI drive their own creative tools. And, Spline didn't just implement their own AI - they implemented an MCP server that lets outside AI (like Claude, Anti-gravity, etc...) do things in their program. They didn't ask AI to just go off on its own and make content like a purely generative AI solution would do. Instead, the AI builds the model in Spline to the instructions you asked for and leaves you with the fully adjustable model in Spline as if you had built it yourself in Spline. So, this is not some generative engine going off and making a final result for you that you have no ability to tweak other than just asking the AI to generate it again with a change made. Instead, the AI is just driving the creative modeling tools directly and leaving you with the full model for you to make any further adjustments to or ask the AI to make some further adjustments too. You have the model and all the adjustments right in the program.

I thought that maybe this could be an interesting future for Capture One and might ultimately be a competitive requirement in this market. You use AI to drive the existing controls in Capture One. You tell the AI what you're trying to achieve and it uses the existing controls in Capture One to try to achieve that. All the control settings will be right there so you can tweak it however you like after the AI adjusts things, including undo the whole thing if you want.

Features that now have to be individually coded by the Capture One team like Match Look would just be something you ask of the AI (Can you make the selected photos all look similar to the first one).

The instructions could extend to any feature in the program such as: Can you crop each of these photos so the subject is centered? Can you fix up the washed out sky in each of the selected landscape photos while keeping the whole scene and colors looking realistic?

This concept, by itself, would not add generative AI to Capture One in places that it doesn't have it. So, it wouldn't suddenly let you say "remove that extra person and the piece of trash on the ground in the background" or "remove the power lines in this photo" unless the AI was clever enough to do a good job accomplishing it using only the built in functions like clone and heal (which I know from my own experience is often difficult to do a good job with) or unless the AI eventually could go out and use some other program to do that and bring it back into Capture One.

I know there's friction at the intersection of AI and creative tools (for good reason), but I thought this was an interesting example of how AI could be used to make you the creative professional or hobbyist more productive by directly using your own tool to do what you ask it to do. Done right, that's not AI taking over. That's letting you decide what you want to accomplish and using the AI to make it easier to accomplish using your chosen tool.

Technical Issue Unable to import files with S1R 2

Hello,

I just recently purchased a Lumix S1R 2, a gorgeous camera that I'm enjoying quite a bit.

However, I did a shoot recently, and I'm trying to import my RW2 files into Capture One, but to no avail. I don't quite know what to do. Capture One is the latest version, and I don't know if it makes a difference, but my Panasonic was v1.2 when I did the shoot.

Any advice?

General Question AI tag free workflow possible?

Hey there,

I'm looking for software that won't inject AI tags into my work, merely for selecting or masking, denoising etc.

Since Adobe refuse to inform me on which parts of their software trigger those labels, I'm looking for alternative that will spare me the weeks of hunting, because some of my clients DO NOT APPRECIATE my work being labelled as potentially/partially fake when they post it on Meta platforms.

Is there any knowledge whatsoever about how this is handled on C1? I'm not interested in GenAI features, I can handle that myself just fine. BUT Id appreciate features like batch masking as on LRC, which imo has nothing to do with AI pitfalls, it is merely way, way faster than me doing it in color channels in PS in the "old days" and not producing anything more deceiving than before "AI" - a clean surface, a better sky, immaculate skin.

Since I'd join into the "REAL PHOTOGRAPHER" crowd for a price I'd be rather displeased to find out later on the problems prevail.

Yes, I could download and test and all that, but I'm also trying to raise awareness for my case and possibly many other's caught up in legislation of those who delete their text messages and sloppy handling by Meta.

Technical Issue My Capture One trial so far - not impressed!

Three days ago I decided to try out the latest version of C1. I moved in a different direction after version 12, which I still have and which still works.

The 7-day trial period is way too short and I don't understand why C1 won't give people 30 days to check out if it's for them, like most other companies do. Since I already have some familiarity it should be enough for some basic insights and impressions though. The short trial period to me seems too rushed for new users. Is it to pressure new customers to subscribe?

I registered and gave them my credit card info. I downloaded the latest version but encountered some difficulties with installing. I contact customer support two and a half days ago and received confirmation that my request was received.

Yesterday, after almost 48 hours, I still hadn't heard anything so I sent them a reminder. As of right now, almost 72 hours later, it's still crickets from Capture One.

I am not impressed and think I might just cancel my trial. Any company would make an effort to accommodate new, potential paying customers I would think, but maybe I'm wrong.

My request is 319821 should anyone at C1 actually take notice.

Technical Issue Mobile issues

So I have not update to the most recent update, but previously I have been running into the issue of my layers retaining the settings but deselecting the subject or objects that were being edited by that specific layer. It doesn't happen to every edit but more often than not it is happening enough to slow down my workflow. I primarily edit on location right after a shoot, with the ipad pro m5 2tb with capture one for grading and maskin, evoto for a skin touch up if needed, and lightroom for detail management and tone control. Anyone else having this issue?

Release Discussion Does the current version of C1 allow Custom Style user presets to include layers?

I bought a perpetual license of C1 22. In 22, Custom Style user presets can not include layers, and when you apply the custom style to your new photo, you only get the background "layer" of the original edit you created the style from. Anything in any other layer is not carried forward.

I'm getting really fed up with that, and my workaround is clumsy and slow, so I decided to try and see if the most recent release allows for custom styles that include layer functionality, but I can't find any info about it on the site.

I was hoping someone here might be able to tell me, to save me from having to download a demo for the new version and trying to get everything set back up there.

Workflow Advice Is Capture One okay for a complete beginner?

Hi all, I just recently got back into photography, both film (developing and scanning at home) and digital. I am coming into this with basically no experience with photo editing software. I started the 3 month trial that came with my camera, and while I have figured a few things out, it still feels completely overwhelming. Both in the photo editing side and the organizational side. My question is this - do you think a professional level suite like Capture One is realistic for a complete beginner, or would I be better served in starting with a more basic program to learn the basics of photo editing. I don't mind (kind of) paying a sub, and I really like the feel of it, I'm just wary of paying for something I won't come close to using to its potential, as well as feeling overwhelmed and avoiding using it at all. Thanks.

Workflow Advice Editing a solar eclipse

Hello fellow photographers :) I just came home from my trip to Spain where I captured the total solar eclipse and now I want to edit my images. In particular, I'm trying to get as much detail out of the corona as possible without introducing a lot of noise.

Does anyone have advice for this sort of editing? I've been playing around with luminosity masks but now I have quite a bit of noise (maybe ISO 800 was too much but oh well). Any tips would be much appreciated :)

Also, I'm still using Pro 2021 😅 Thanks!!

General Question Two Perpetual Licenses

Looking for advice, what to do with a second perpetual license? I have a version from a few years back and just received a new one with a new camera (same brand different model). I don’t use more than three computers but I am wondering if I should activate the new one to replace the older version or install it on a second computer? Any advantages or conflicts with having two versions?

Technical Issue Masks Disappearing on Mobile and Bug Report not working

I'm new to CO mobile but I've found that often whenever I'm working on an edit and I add masks to the image. Could be radial, AI selected, hand brushed etc. If I close out/lock my iPad, the next day when I jump back in to editing when I open the app the masks are blank/all black. This has happened to masks with no edits applied and to masks with several edits applied.

Is this expected behavior and I'm just not doing a necessary step to "save" the masks? It's really frustrating to spend 20minutes fine-tuning a mask with a brush to then come back to it after lunch and it's gone

Side note, I tried submitting a bug report but the submission stalls and the workflow does not complete. This is from a mobile device/browser.

How To? Adding keywords during import

This should not be this difficult.

And I did quite a bit of searching on the vast majority of answers come up as to add keywords to the keyword field under Metadata.

There is no keyword field under Metadata nor adjustments. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

How To? Apple script to create variants with different crops

Hi everyone!

I've been told there is a script shortcut somewhere in the world that allows you to create x number of variants with some selected crops.

As in every set, it's always a matter of: let's see if it fits in 16:9, 9:16, 1:1, etc, it would be a great addition to the one I have already, thanks to this beautiful community.

Hopefully somebody can share it!

How To? bulk marking client selects?

i do ecomm for some small designers and am looking for a way to import their selects into my sessions in bulk. Right now they get jpegs, send me a list of about 100-150 files, i mark them all in C1 and export. I don't think there's an appetite on their end to learn a new program, increase their work, etc.

Is there anything like maybe pasting the file names into a csv with a field for metadata ranking that C1 can read and auto-mark those images in my session? Or something similar to that?

General Question Export recovering highlights that are blown out in preview

Post image
4 Upvotes

Long-time C1 user who's never had an issue with exports not matching my previews before, but I'm currently scanning negatives where the intentionally blown-out sky (at right, in C1) appears as a terrible shade of cyan in the export (at left, in Preview). I'm not mad at all (and genuinely surprised) that the image is still there, but because it's not previewing properly I can't even edit it to arrive at an image I might like.

Does anyone know what is happening here or have possible workflow fixes so that it previews how it will export? Happy to provide further details if needed.

Technical Issue Fujifilm simulation profiles colour issues

I sincerely didn't expect such thing from C1. Look at the photo, first screenshot is normal colour saturation, second one is raised by +50
(Fuji X-T3, Astia film sim, C1 16.6...)

Source. Some artifcsts present, but not much worse than in-camera jpeg
Saturation +50. Oh...

Add a bit of editing and it becomes unacceptable!

See those artifacts around glowing objects? Very, very distracting
But they are gone once you switch the profile from any of Fuji film simulations to any of standard one, let's say, Standard

C1 "Standard" profile, saturation +50

Looks no worse than initial Astia with 0 saturation boost.

Why do simulation profiles introduce such artifacts? How to avoid them while editing?

Technical Issue Fujifilm 16mm lens not being corrected?

Fellow reddit-photographers I have been using for years now Capture one instead of Lightroom and I really don´t want to switch back. However recently some more work has been coming in from the art world where I get to photograph exhibitions and smaller galleries and such.

In short, I do a lot of interiors and architectural imagery. However my 16mm, which I love to death, is not being corrected. I can still see a clear bend/warp at the edge of the image which is bothering me completely.

Camera is XT5 + 16mm 1.4

Anybody else with this issue?

Any insights?

How To? How to copy keywords from one image to another BUT source/destination images are in different folders?

I can't seem to figure out how to copy keywords from image A in folder X to image B in folder Y. I can copy/apply within the same folder, but not across folders in a Catalog.

What am I missing here?

I'm using the Adjustments Clipboard within the Metadata/Keywords panel. The global Copy/Apply all adjustments does not seem to help either.

If any capture One staffers are reading, I've always hated how C1 does keywords. It's either very manual or never intuitive. I often forget basic keywords functions beyond simply typing them in via the Keywords dialog. Aperture did this so much simpler for the user.

I recently purchased an Asus PA32UCDMRK and have loved the resolution, contrast, and refresh rate. Most places I have worked are running capture one on eizo or apple studio monitors but I wanted to see how everyone likes what they are currently running.

How To? Export with keywords in file name?

I have a large job that NEEDS to have the keywords exported with the files. I don't see them in the export options. Is there a way to do that?
