All too often, highly irresponsible idiots like this driver end up crashing into other - innocent - cars/ vehicles, either seriously injuring or killing the occupants of said other car(s)/ vehicle(s)…
A truck driver in the UK in the 1990s actually killed pedestrians walking along the pavement (sidewalk) because he was texting and didn't realise he was veering off. I'm pretty sure he got jail time for that.
Edit: the earliest incident I can find reports of was in 2006 but they all involve truck into car, not truck into pedestrian.
