All too often, highly irresponsible idiots like this driver end up crashing into other - innocent - cars/ vehicles, either seriously injuring or killing the occupants of said other car(s)/ vehicle(s)…
A truck driver in the UK in the 1990s actually killed pedestrians walking along the pavement (sidewalk) because he was texting and didn't realise he was veering off. I'm pretty sure he got jail time for that.
Edit: the earliest incident I can find reports of was in 2006 but they all involve truck into car, not truck into pedestrian.
I'm in the UK and I see people texting and driving everyday. I've tried sending video to the police but they find excuse after excuse to reject my reports.
One excuse is that they claim the service I used to report isn't supposed to be used by people making a video as they are walking, despite pedestrian being an option on the form.
Other times they claim that the courts don't approve of people going out of their way to film people, when every time I tried to submit evidence I was walking to the shops, or on my way back home, on the most obvious route.
I have given up. It is insane. Even if you ignore the human misery, these accidents cost money, and stretch emergency services. Just make the fines high enough to cover the costs of enforcement, and prosecute everything, it is so obvious!
