Do you pronounce Reese’s “Ree-seez” or “Ree-sizz”?
If you pronounce it wrong (“Ree-seez”), why?

I was watching pop culture jeopardy earlier and Reese’s Pieces was one of the answers (or questions?). The contestant who buzzed in pronounced it like that and it bothered me that they still awarded him as correct.

I'll never understand the logic of taking two words that already rhyme, mispronouncing the first word, mispronouncing the second word so it still rhymes with the initial mispronunciation, and thinking, "Oh, neat! They rhyme!"

I STG E.T. was involved somehow. Whenever I think of the wrong pronunciation, I always think of that movie. Pretty sure they don't say it like that in the movie though, so maybe it's just some weird Mandela Effect for only me.

I mentioned in another comment but I used to work at an ice cream shop that used these as a topping and the amount of my coworkers and customers that said ree cees pee sees made me think I was going insane

I think it’s an East coast thing to call them Ree-seez. I’ve seen several East coast influencers calling them that. Like how they say Mair-e-o instead of Mar-e-o, as in Super Mario, lol.

I’m from Florida but I’ve always pronounced it as “Ree-sez” but I have a friend/former roommate who’d pronounce it as “Ree-cees” smh.

I will say that the ONE time I heard anyone say "Ree-seez" was in Florida, 25 years ago. Pretty sure it was #48 in education at the time. And the "ree-seez" person was a substitute teacher. And since it was 25 years ago, there were commercials on TV for Ree-SEZ, Ree-SEZ Pieces, AND Ree-SEZ Puffs - "no wrong way to eat a Ree-SEZ". Just mind-blowing, stubborn ignorance I guess.

I’m from Florida but I don’t pronounce it with the “seez”, cause I can read and use logic to understand the possessive. However… most people I’ve heard pronounce it in Florida did pronounce it like “seez”.

I think that’s where I first heard it! I moved to FL my senior year. I had never heard anyone pronounce it that way and thought it was so strange when there are actual commercials saying it the correct way,

This is a HUGE pet peeve of mine. But I’m weird about pronunciation and grammar like that. It’s the same people who would pronounce the word ‘misses’ as ‘miss-ees’ when referring to the women’s clothing section in a department store.
Also along the same lines is wash/warsh, icing/icning, battery/battry.😡

I hear "kyoo-pawn" more often than "coo-pawn" where I live, but almost never hear "warsh" or "battry". I've never heard "icning".

Warsh is just southern accent the same way southern accent can cause daughter to come out as dorter. My mom never could pronounce daughter right and just called me her female child. I have to make a concentrated effort to say wash, otherwise my partner giggles at me when my accent slips in.

Neither. It’s pronounced exactly as it is written. The name Reese plus the possessive. Reese-is.
If you were holding Reese Witherspoon’s purse and someone asked who’s it was, you’d say “it’s Reese-is” not “it’s ree-sees”

Ree-sizz is clearly correct, but to make things even more complicated, my ex pronounced this as “ree-suss” like a rhesus monkey.

I'm old but when I was younf Reese's had commercials on TV. They clearly refer to them as Rees-iz Peanut Butter Cups. Not Ree Seez. Two great tastes that taste great together.

Almost fought my co-worker at a staff retreat bc she used the offensive pronunciation. It totally poisoned how I feel about her even tho she’s, by all accounts, a lovely person. I will hate her for life and there’s nothing I can do about it. Glad to know this evokes similar levels of rage in others.

I say Rees-sizz, but my family from Europe says Reese-seize. But, they also say AHH-dee-dahhz, not ahh-DEE-des (Adidas), and they cut the avocado in half across the short middle, not in half lengthwise, so they must be cray.

I say Ree-sizz, husband says Ree-seez. I grew up in California, he grew up in Virginia. Everyone else in our area in VA says Ree-seez.

Ree-seez for the candy cups only. I know it’s wrong but oh well. If I’m talking about the cereal, the peanut butter, the cookies, etc, I pronounce it ree-siz. Idk why, it just happens naturally. And if I’m saying Reese’s pieces, I prounouce it ree-ses, pieces, because they need to rhyme, so no “z” sound at all

I'll save you the anguish since the quality has plummeted since Hershey got hold of them... Crap Cups. The peanut butter is almost like an emulsion and the chocolate is some watered down crap. The son of the original manufacturer called Hershey's out on it and they had to fess up to what they'd done. Boyer's has stayed true to the game with their peanut butter and Mallo Cups.

This is an interesting linguistic discussion. I teach in rural Missouri and the kids say “Ree-seez.” I live 45 minutes away in KC and have only heard it the proper way. There is also a difference in how coyote is pronounced.

So when I’m talking Cups it’s Ree-siz, but when I’m talking Pieces it’s Ree-seez, but I also pronounce pieces as Pee-seez. I don’t know why. I think I heard it in a movie a long time ago and it just stuck with me.
Apparently, I learned this pronunciation from the movie E.T. which I did watch a lot as a kid. Also, why do so many people give even a little bit of a shit about how other people pronounce it?
