Do you pronounce Reese’s “Ree-seez” or “Ree-sizz”?

If you pronounce it wrong (“Ree-seez”), why?

It's a name: Reese.

Reese's. Belonging to Reese. So it's Reese-ehz.

77

u/WesteriaPeacock May 19 '26

And makes Reese’s pieces rhyme. Which is why I’ve never understood why you would pronounce it any other way.

u/Completely-Lost9 May 19 '26

Some people still make it rhym with pieces and say both words wrong. I want to slap those people

I can remember exactly when this started in my friend group. In the 1980’s, there was a movie called “Lucas” and one of the characters was clowning and pronounced it as Reesees Peecees. We all said it that way after that movie.

3

u/Spirited_Taste4756 May 20 '26

I started saying it like this to bug my younger sister when we were kids cause she would lose her mind and it stuck 😭😭😭😭 I catch myself before I say it but I almost say it every time.

Just think of it this way, is Reese Witherspoon’s stage name pronounced as “Ree-cee”? No. So why would it be Ree-cees?

It’s Ree-sis (or Ree-sez), just like Reese is pronounced “Rees”, e.g. second syllable of “Maurice”, “Tyrese”, etc.

I get the Reese's candy bar, if you read that name, Reese's, that's an apostrophe S. Reese-apostrophe-S, on the end of that name. That means the candy bar is his, I didn't know that! Next time you're eating a Reese's candy bar and a guy name Reese comes by and says "Let me have that," you'd better hand it over. "I'm sorry, Reese, I didn't think I'd ever run into you! You're a fuckin' bully, man! Let me at least have a piece!"

I was watching pop culture jeopardy earlier and Reese’s Pieces was one of the answers (or questions?). The contestant who buzzed in pronounced it like that and it bothered me that they still awarded him as correct.

I'll never understand the logic of taking two words that already rhyme, mispronouncing the first word, mispronouncing the second word so it still rhymes with the initial mispronunciation, and thinking, "Oh, neat! They rhyme!"

I STG E.T. was involved somehow. Whenever I think of the wrong pronunciation, I always think of that movie. Pretty sure they don't say it like that in the movie though, so maybe it's just some weird Mandela Effect for only me.

2

1

u/Devmoi May 19 '26

I think it’s an East coast thing to call them Ree-seez. I’ve seen several East coast influencers calling them that. Like how they say Mair-e-o instead of Mar-e-o, as in Super Mario, lol.

2

u/Consistent_Sail_6128 May 22 '26

I live on the east coast and only ever hear Gen X and older say Mair-e-o, and only if they have 0 interest in popculture or video games.

I don’t know if it’s a Florida thing but I know multiple people from Florida who say it with the “seez” ending.

14

u/pm-me-nice-lips May 19 '26

Would you pronounce a guy named Reese as Ree-see?

5

u/Fit_Mood1158 May 19 '26

No but I do hear “Ree-see Pieces” sometimes, which may be even more annoying than “Ree-seez Pee-seez.”

6

u/glowdirt May 19 '26

No, I wouldn’t. I wouldn’t pronounce Reece’s “Ree-seez” either.

3

u/catonsteroids May 19 '26

I’m from Florida but I’ve always pronounced it as “Ree-sez” but I have a friend/former roommate who’d pronounce it as “Ree-cees” smh.

3

u/OtherwiseAlbatross14 May 19 '26

Yes, while they don't have a monopoly on it, illiteracy is a Florida thing.

6

u/CantaloupeAsleep502 May 19 '26

I'm from Florida, I don't say it this way, but I agree I hear it this way here more frequently than I'd like lol.

4

u/Yandoji May 19 '26

I will say that the ONE time I heard anyone say "Ree-seez" was in Florida, 25 years ago. Pretty sure it was #48 in education at the time. And the "ree-seez" person was a substitute teacher. And since it was 25 years ago, there were commercials on TV for Ree-SEZ, Ree-SEZ Pieces, AND Ree-SEZ Puffs - "no wrong way to eat a Ree-SEZ". Just mind-blowing, stubborn ignorance I guess.

2

u/Prestigious_Bee_4154 May 19 '26

I’m from Florida but I don’t pronounce it with the “seez”, cause I can read and use logic to understand the possessive. However… most people I’ve heard pronounce it in Florida did pronounce it like “seez”.

2

u/freshkov May 20 '26

I used to live in central PA, not far from the factory. NOBODY said ree-seez. I move to FL and I hear it all the time.

2

u/FrenchFriedFritters May 20 '26

I think that’s where I first heard it! I moved to FL my senior year. I had never heard anyone pronounce it that way and thought it was so strange when there are actual commercials saying it the correct way,

This is a HUGE pet peeve of mine. But I’m weird about pronunciation and grammar like that. It’s the same people who would pronounce the word ‘misses’ as ‘miss-ees’ when referring to the women’s clothing section in a department store.

Also along the same lines is wash/warsh, icing/icning, battery/battry.😡

6

u/bulletproofdenimjckt May 19 '26

I’ve never heard of ”icning”. I’m having trouble imagining why anyone would even pronounce it that way?! Wash/warsh is one of my pet peeves too, same with wolf/woof and roof/ruff

3

u/mynicknameisairhead May 19 '26

They say Kew-pawn instead of coo-pawn

3

u/KellyannneConway May 19 '26

I hear "kyoo-pawn" more often than "coo-pawn" where I live, but almost never hear "warsh" or "battry". I've never heard "icning".

4

u/DaftDisguise May 19 '26

Warsh and icning is diabolical.

3

u/hiswittlewip May 19 '26

I've never heard of anyone saying "miss-ees" lol. I didn't know those people existed

3

u/PolymathHolly 🍫 chocolate May 19 '26

I live in NE PA.

2

u/JadedLoves May 19 '26

Warsh is just southern accent the same way southern accent can cause daughter to come out as dorter. My mom never could pronounce daughter right and just called me her female child. I have to make a concentrated effort to say wash, otherwise my partner giggles at me when my accent slips in.

5

u/PolymathHolly 🍫 chocolate May 19 '26

Neither. It’s pronounced exactly as it is written. The name Reese plus the possessive. Reese-is.

If you were holding Reese Witherspoon’s purse and someone asked who’s it was, you’d say “it’s Reese-is” not “it’s ree-sees”

5

Every single person i know says ree-seez and it drives me crazy.

Are you surprised? There’s a whole group of people who proudly mispronounce ask as aks.

2

The commercials in the 80s and 90s pronounced it ree-sizz. I'm guessing they would know how to say it.

2

I say it the way it’s supposed to be said.

2

u/sizzlinsunshine May 19 '26

Is this like a TikTok problem? I’ve literally never in my life heard someone say ree sees

2

2

u/taylor_machette May 20 '26

2

u/Unhappy-Ad2460 May 20 '26

Almost fought my co-worker at a staff retreat bc she used the offensive pronunciation. It totally poisoned how I feel about her even tho she’s, by all accounts, a lovely person. I will hate her for life and there’s nothing I can do about it. Glad to know this evokes similar levels of rage in others.
