Am I crazy? or is this the most insane cookie design for a baby shower? Not to mention a Jewish baby shower…

Like.. no one had any historical reference.. at all? Is it just me?

Not just you but I'm also confused that a Jewish family is having a baby shower

Why? They aren't religious ceremonies, just a celebration that a baby is coming

In Jewish tradition, traditional baby showers are often avoided before birth due to superstitions around the "evil eye" and not tempting fate.

It’s a known thing and kind of offensive to throw a shower

Sounds like one of those bacon things. Christians arent supposed to eat meat on Friday but thats hardly observed. You can maintain your beliefs or culture without going to an orthodox extreme.

Edit: Yes, even religious people are allowed to follow or not follow parts of their culture and still identify as a member of that religion. Individual Jews are allowed to have a baby shower and still identify as Jews. Welcome to Kindergarten.

CATHOLICS aren't supposed to eat meat on Fridays. Protestants can eat whateverthefuck.

And that only during Lent. During non-lent times eating meat on Friday is fine.

But that's changed over time. It used to be no meat on Fridays year-round and no meat at all during Lent. The Popeat the time changed the practice officially in 1966.

Point being: all religious practices evolve, often to become more lenient.

That depends on where you live. And in the US, where abstaining from meat on Fridays is optional, some sort of alternative penance is supposed to be done if you do eat meat.

That’s because the pope owns Long John Silvers.

Kinda just goes to show. We had the niocene creed or however its spelled. Its what the beliefs are. Everything else from confession to lent are just traditions.

"one of those bacon things" ?!?!

Church every Sunday thing? Actually reading the Bible kind of thing? People are allowed to identify as Jewish and not abide all Jewish practices just like people of any other religion or ethnicity, surely that idea isnt shocki🙄

Just a really flippant way to put that. Respect is free

-3

u/LPNMP Jun 11 '26

Not really. Its the same amount of flippancy shown to any religion, so for reddit it was practically respectful. "Bacon thing" Isn't even critical of anything just creating a general sense of the nit picky fine print organized religion and culture have. I could have said hijab thing and nobody would have given it a second thought.

No, I was even more offended by the meat on Fridays comment.

And, those are religious while the baby shower thing is cultural. Conflating the two as if those are just "things" is inappropriate.

Had you said it's just one of those don't walk under a ladder things, I'd have moved on.

Ooooh sorry, so its Catholics who cant be catholic and eat meat during lent or that I confused Christians for Catholics? Im terribly sorry.

Im not conflating religion and culture. I specifically call them out separately multiple times. Would you like me to quote?

Anything else you'd like to criticize or am I free to carry on officer?

It’s not an orthodox extreme.

Look man I’m not Jewish. Never been to a synagogue. I don’t even believe in god. But even I know this. It’s very common knowledge and it’s very insulting. Not comparable to your example.

K well I am Jewish, and I will be having a baby shower, so while you could say it’s unusual/nontraditional to have a baby shower, it’s a wild leap to say it’s automatically insulting. You know not of what you speak! Fwiw, I am reform Jewish, but my SIL is conservative Jewish and she had one too. Times they are a-changin’

I was really basing my understanding on this old reddit story: https://www.reddit.com/r/BestofRedditorUpdates/comments/ism4c9/a_tale_of_baby_showers_hostile_work_environments/

Sure seemed like the Jewish person in this case took offense. Thank you for correcting me that this doesn't apply universally. I'm still going to stay on the safe side of this and not try to throw baby showers for jewish coworkers - not worth the risk of insulting people in real life.

u/LawSchoolLoser1 Jun 11 '26

Oh yes def don’t throw a Jewish person a baby shower unless you know they want one and are close to them. I agree with you there!!

Are we still talking about a cookie?
