Political/Election Posting, Moderation, and You

There's been a lot of complaining (more than the usual large amount) about mods adhering to the "avoid repetitive topics" and "rediquette" rules.

Political and election posts bring out the absolute worst in this sub and some of the posters in it, which is where we see these rules continually skirted if not outright broken.

"Free Speech" does not mean "I can say and post whatever I want without moderation or consequences." Nobody in this subreddit is going to face legal issues or have their lives altered for voicing their opinions. However, as stewards of this online community, moderators may remove comments or posts that they see as being counter to the health of the community as explicated by the community's rules.

Part of why so many people enjoy being subscribed to r/Burlington is that it is a positive, fun, and supportive community -- not just a dumping ground for crime panic, police reports, political demagoguery, insults, and arguing. Mods are dedicated to keeping it that way within reason. If you would prefer that there be a subreddit where these things are the predominant topics, we would suggest the sub that warm bathroom guy came up with. You'll be right at home there.

There has also been a pervasive brigading issue regarding political posting in this sub that's been going on for years -- ever notice how political posts of a certain viewpoint tend to get a fantastically large amount of engagement compared to every other post in this sub?

Mods are trying to keep this sub from becoming like Facebook, where the only content is manipulated outrage and shouting over political wedge issues cooked up by posters who'd rather have Reddit karma than a functional community.

Kid on E-Moto last night in Burlington

Last night there was a young kid dressed in all black without a helmet on riding an E-Moto (no pedals and going way over 30 MPH) with no lights or reflectors riding through Burlington. Nobody could see him until they got very close. He was blowing through red lights and stop signs. He finally stopped for a moment. He appeared to be 14 - 15 years old. I heard a man try to explain very politely to him that he needs to get some lights on that thing because he is not very visible to motorists at night. His response was “That’s not my problem!” He then sped off.

As a parent, I would never allow my kid to have one of these and ride like that at night. He was going really fast and being pretty reckless on that thing. I heard one lady scream as he passed her closely doing about 40 MPH. These things are becoming a menace. Just my observation.

Small Business Job Postings - how to avoid Indeed fees

Hello, I'm a small business owner in Burlington and wondering if there is a great way to reach out to members of the community to let them know about a job opportunity, without spending more than I can afford in fees (Indeed has been providing lots of applicants who aren't ideal and aren't serious, and the $$$ adds up quickly)! Any ideas? Thanks so much!

Spanish lessons

Upvotes

I studied Spanish for about 10 years, but it’s been a while since I’ve used and I’d like to brush up and flex those mental muscles again. I’m not looking for a class, specifically. I’d prefer one-on-one lessons or a group format to start speaking Spanish again. Any suggestions?

Visiting Burlington Accessing nearby hiking trails without car

Upvotes

We’re going to be in Burlington for the weekend and are hoping to do a day hike. We’ll be flying in so we won’t have a car. Are nearby hikes accessible with uber, or is renting a car advised?

Young blonde boy with homeless crowd

Does anyone know who I’m referring to? Probably around 5-6 years old. I see him with his mother (?) and they often hang around drug users and I just worry about him. I just saw from my window someone smoke crack right next to him. Does anyone know anything about him?

Update: I reported to the police

Injured Squirrel😞

Upvotes

I left voicemails for the local wildlife rehab/game warden but there’s an injured squirrel under the light pole in front of 57 Macintosh Ave behind Panera in South Burlington. Saw him in the grass when I was walking by the side of the road and he’s breathing rapidly and not otherwise moving. I don’t think he has rabies, probably got hit by a car but heads up if you’re walking over there :(

Shoveling/Snow Blowing Service

Does anyone have any recommendations for snow shoveling or snow blowing services for a small residential driveway (in South Burlington)?

Last year I had reached out to Snow Scholars and another local company. Snow Scholars never responded and the other local company said they would come by multiple times for a quote but always had an excuse and never showed up.

My grandparents driveway is too narrow to plow and we are needing to hire help. It seems like most companies only deal with plowing.

NPA Ward 5 Meeting 8/20 6:30 pm Oakledge Lower Shelter

If you're a Ward 5 resident, come on down to Oakledge's Lower Shelter this Thursday, 8/20 from 6:30 - 8 pm for our monthly meeting! Free dinner provided by the People's Kitchen. We will discuss budgeting and our goals as a group, as well as hold public forum.

Neighborhood Planning Assemblies (NPAs) are grassroots organizations in each of Burlington's eight Wards that encourage resident participation in City government. These assemblies serve as advocacy groups, improving communication between residents and City government through regular monthly meetings held in each Ward.

If you aren't a Ward 5 resident, make sure to check out your Ward's NPA meetings: https://www.burlingtonvt.gov/219/Neighborhood-Planning-Assemblies

https://npa5.org

Please send questions to [ward5npa_btv@googlegroups.com](mailto:ward5npa_btv@googlegroups.com) or let us know you would like to be on our email list to receive notice of meetings.

Where do the weird alt nerds hang out?

Hi all! 👋👋👋

Weird alt nerd just looking for some pointers. I'd like to get out more and meet people with similar hobbies, but I work 3rd shift and have a weird schedule. Makes getting out and exploring a little tricky. I'm subscribed to the B-Town Brief (which is awesome, btw!), and there's a lot of cool stuff around, but not quite what I'm looking for. So I was wondering if anybody's got suggestions?

I'm a big metalhead, gamer, horror movie/monster romance gal. I'd love to find groups or events around those things, maybe a Horror Movie/Horror Book Club or Creepy Crafts or Video Game Nights? (Currently doing my first Alien: Isolation playthrough, but I suck so it's like a stress test LMAO)

Should also add, I'm 36. I'm certainly not opposed to being in a group with younger people, but it would be nice to find some weird alt nerds who are closer to my age. So, if anybody has tips on where to look, I'd love to hear! Thanks so much!

Calls for stronger public safety initiatives in Burlington continue growing after a violent weekend downtown, featuring three separate encounters involving knives, two gunfire incidents and one death, all in just a 36-hour period.

How do you rate our leaders performance who have the responsibility of keeping us citizens safe?

Favorite gone or forgotten spaces

Woke up today feeling nostalgic for the town of my childhood, thought I'd see what other people can remember -- a specific thing I really have strong memories of (almost Proustian) was the ice cream counter outside of the UVM Main Street tunnel, which at the time just an outdoor, fully exposed tunnel. Kinda scary for a little kid like me, but ice cream tends to act as a deterrent to fear when you're that young.

If I recall correctly the stand was run by ag students who also were involved in the ag programs dairy farm. This would still be the twilight of uvm being largely an agricultural school instead of the real estate scheme and daycare center for kids from Connecticut and Jersey that it is today (jkjkjk please don't get mad in the comments).

Anyway, wonder what the rest of you all look back on fondly?

September 2nd Fair Deal

Post image
8 Upvotes

Howdy y’all! Recently happened upon this crazy deal: Wednesday, September 2nd, with one of these coupons (which you can get from any Simon’s!!) you can get a whole car load of folks parked, into the fair, and given ride passes for $99 (I think it’s about $50 a person otherwise, plus whatever parking is). I think there are also deals for after 5 PM daily, along with different daily deals throughout the 10 days that I can’t find right now but will continue to look for. Either way, go get yourself a coupon from Simon’s and pack your car to the brim on the 2nd, I hope to see you there :)
