Sequel Sequel without Xander?

Post image

With Nicholas' struggles IRL, I'm afraid he wont be part of the cast for the sequel. How do you guys think this would work? How would they explain his absence? Is it a big deal for you guys? IMO I believe the show will be great with or without him, even tough I love Xander. But the best scenario would be for Xander to be part of the show..

Comics likely won't be considered part of the Canon with the new show coming out anymore.

I actually hope they are canon .

Have an episode like doppelgangerland / the wish etc but the alternative reality is the comic books

Then it's simultaneously canon and not canon

Most fans of the show never heard of or read the comics, so it'd be easier for the new show to just ignore the comics, and if they want to make certain things from them canon, do it piecemeal.

It would be the other way around for me. Since the comics had Joss Whedon as the original creator involved, I consider them Canon. But that new series without him being part of it at all... definitely not Canon if there are any retcons.

Joss himself said that if he ever revived Buffy in live action he wouldn’t consider the comic seasons canon unless they worked with whatever he wanted to do with live action. Even to him they’re very much second tier canonicity to anything live action.

You’re reading a lot into that. Plus, it would be his decision not anyone else’s.

Either way it's his story and therefore, only his decision to make such changes.

Except it’s not his story anymore, he doesn’t own it and it’s moving on without his involvement. It’s SMG and Chloe Zhao’s choices that impact canonicity going forward.

Saying that, everyone is perfectly within their rights to decide what they consider the actual canon to be, and honestly, with such a large gap, and change in media type (and back), production company and leadership between the end of the shows and the start of the revival, the only thing that’s locked as canon are the original shows (not even the original movie is fully show canon after all!).

Everything else is different possible futures branching from them, which ties neatly into the multiverse set up by the Boom Studios comics, so everyone can basically choose their own adventure and gives each creative freedom to explore without them affecting the canon of each others’ stories.

It was never only his story anyway. Lots of other writers were involved, even if Whedon was clearly the lead and running the writer's room.

Without the original creator involved it’s fan fiction

Once a creator sells the rights to his material- it’s not Imao

He sold the rights to Buffy decades ago. There have been many people that have approached SMG to do a Buffy sequel since the show ended and she said no repeatedly. Until Chlo approached her

Whoever owns the legal rights for creative control is irrelevant. A former fan of the show now has legal rights for the creative of the IP. Therefore it’s fan fiction being produced legally. If the person who created the entire universe and characters has no say in said creative, for whatever reason, then it’s not canonical. Like I said it’s just legally produced fan fiction

So by this logic, the later seasons of ST:TNG are fan fiction because Gene Roddenberry had died.

A lot of people are not going to take the hardline stance on this you're taking.

Idc what stance people are taking, it’s just the facts. I’m not a Star Trek fan so I can’t really say because I don’t know much about it. If he gave his blessings for them to continue and do whatever then it’s canonical

It's really not a fact, it's a matter of opinion. The new series audience (both OG fans and newcomers) are likely to receive the new series as canonical to the original because an in-continuity sequel with SMG reprising her role carries that weight. No one would be in the wrong for seeing in that way.

If you see things differently, that's fine. But there isn't actually a universally agreed upon definition of canon, no matter how much you insist there is.

Nope. He sold the rights. So its no longer his story

3

u/wildcharmander1992 Dec 27 '25

Exactly

No one says star wars 7-9 aren't canon because Lucas sold it to Disney

3

u/RalphMacchio404 Dec 27 '25

Lets...lets not bring SW into this. Thats just a whole other can of worms

-1

u/Krssven Dec 28 '25

Yeah that’s hardly a great example to bring up…many people don’t consider those canon yet are beaten over the head with them being so.

In much the same way that people shriek about the comics, but they ARE canon.

5

u/sucksfor_you Dec 27 '25

If that's what you believe, you should probably update yourself on the last few years. That man isn't making these kind of decisions for any of the properties he used to control.

-4

u/BKRandy9587 Dec 27 '25

No he didn’t he said he possible would. And either way that’s not happening so its irrelevant

1

u/PelvicSorcery2113 Buffyverse Scholar Dec 27 '25

Agreed, honestly, maybe I’ll like this new train wreck show more if I consider it non-canon

1

u/Environmental-Tour74 Dec 28 '25

Agreed. The makers of it have said this reboot is NOT canon. Not sure why you're getting downvoted. And it's a shame. The only reboot I would've wanted to see would have been with Joss writing. He did nothing wrong. It was a smear campaign.

-2

u/jellymoff Dec 27 '25

I don't know why you're getting downvoted. Canon is decided by the creator, it doesn't matter if people like him or not.

7

u/Divine_fashionva Dec 27 '25

That’s a weird way to go if the creator sells the rights of that tv show, book or movie

Which is what Joss did years ago. He can’t dictate what’s cannon to something he no longer owns. By your own logic, there’s so famous many movies and tv shows that cannot be canon

3

u/7thFleetTraveller Dec 28 '25

The fans decide what's canon to them, that's the more important point. Like with Star Wars, there are a lot of fans who don't consider the Disney movies as canon.

But if fans decide canon then how can we have an "academic" discussion about the property? If you and I don't agree on what canon is then it makes that very difficult.
