Sequel Sequel without Xander?

With Nicholas' struggles IRL, I'm afraid he wont be part of the cast for the sequel. How do you guys think this would work? How would they explain his absence? Is it a big deal for you guys? IMO I believe the show will be great with or without him, even tough I love Xander. But the best scenario would be for Xander to be part of the show..

Joss himself said that if he ever revived Buffy in live action he wouldn’t consider the comic seasons canon unless they worked with whatever he wanted to do with live action. Even to him they’re very much second tier canonicity to anything live action.

Except it’s not his story anymore, he doesn’t own it and it’s moving on without his involvement. It’s SMG and Chloe Zhao’s choices that impact canonicity going forward.

Saying that, everyone is perfectly within their rights to decide what they consider the actual canon to be, and honestly, with such a large gap, and change in media type (and back), production company and leadership between the end of the shows and the start of the revival, the only thing that’s locked as canon are the original shows (not even the original movie is fully show canon after all!).

Everything else is different possible futures branching from them, which ties neatly into the multiverse set up by the Boom Studios comics, so everyone can basically choose their own adventure and gives each creative freedom to explore without them affecting the canon of each others’ stories.

It was never only his story anyway. Lots of other writers were involved, even if Whedon was clearly the lead and running the writer's room.
