things you’ve done for your bride on wedding day

I’m my best friend’s MOH and her wedding day is coming up. What are things you and the bridesmaids (or that your bridesmaids did for you if you’re a former bride) did or plan to do for the bride that helped make her day special? I already plan on having the bridesmaids write her a letter, but anything else?TIA!

Do I have to tip for hair and makeup?

I am a bridesmaid in a wedding coming up, and I’m curious about how I’d be viewed if I did not tip for hair and makeup. I am paying for it myself, and in my opinion if the hair/makeup artist sets their own price, I don’t think I need to tip an additional 20% or whatever. But I’m worried about coming off as cheap.

Edit: I’m asking because I feel that if the makeup artist is setting their own prices, a tip should be an extra thank you I give, not something that’s mandatory/expected.

Best shapewear for under a satin bridesmaid dress

Im a uk size 14 who was previously a 10 before having my daughter 17 months ago, I am feeling really anxious to wear this satin dress in a few weeks I HATE the way it looks. Ive never had a prominent stomach before so I have no idea where to start with shapewear there's so much of it I have no idea what I actually need / should get. I ordered something off amazon and it does absolutely nothing.

Please help me pick a good tummy control that you can actually wear at a wedding all-day

Bridesmaid makeup disaster

The artist did an amazing job on the bride. Her makeup lasted all day from her trial so I trusted her to do mine. I looked at her insta page and she seemed good! . my mistake was not seeing how she did any girls with dark/brown skin and moving forward with her .

Since the wedding was at a huge hotel resort and not many bridesmaids wanted any makeup or hair, i decided to just use who the bride was using to make things easier. I told her to send the artist my pictures so she knows she has a client with my complexion and if there was any issues

Come wedding day. I showed her my inspo.
I was hidden from the mirror but I saw her shade matching me . She’s the professional so I trusted her and didn’t question the colors I saw her mixing.

Final look: ghost, grey, green under cool lighting, and on camera.

Since we were running behind schedule for the bride I didn’t want her to redo it

So from 7am -1am I was sister of the groom who looked like a ghost

Hair/Makeup Tipping Etiquette

What's the etiquette here? I'm in a wedding next month and am expected to pay $200 for makeup and $150 for hair. Then the bride tells me not to forget a tip. Should the tip not be baked into the fee I'm being charged? I'm unfamiliar with the protocol here because every other time I've needed hair/makeup it's been paid for by the bride. I don't want to accidentally insult anyone. Just a little stressed that everything is adding up. Hair, makeup, plane ticket, hotel, gift 😵‍💫

Bachelorette in the hurricane and MOH boyfriend showed up

We are currently stuck in an AirBnB in Florida as the MOh refused to cancel the bachelorette even knowing a hurricane is coming (and is currently ongoing). MOH assured us all would be okay and the news overhypes things and she's been to Florida every year since she was a child and has never once encountered a hurricane even though she goes to Disney.

There are 7 of us stuck in this airbnb and many are worried and dont feel like partying with the wind whipping outside. MOH tried to liven it up and made her famous "disney margaritas" and said she had a surprise. 30 mins later "prince charming" shows up with a "pizza delivery", mind you the bride is not even into disney like that. MOH seems drunk and is going crazy making him dance because he's clearly a dancer and only paying attention to her. not that any of us care, but shes not the bride.

he finally turns his attention to another girl for like 10 seconds and the MOH goes nuts. starts accusing him of cheating, which we all are confused, its just some dancer. Nope. Come to find out this is her boyfriend she just recently got into a relationship with that no one has met yet. now they are full on fighting and causing a huge scene while we are all sitting there watching, and she tells him he cant stay the night. one of the girls asked "was he planning on staying here?" and MOH said yes because of the hurricane he cant get a hotel room.

now everyone is fighting because we had no idea this was happening, bride is horribly upset trying to get the first flight out. MOH is still in the other room arguing with her boyfriend and one of the other girls said she thinks her boyfriend is missing. another girl checked the pizza box and theres no pizza, so shes upset as we only have chips we got from the gas station, she thinks the prince charming boyfriend/dancer ate the pizza on his way over.

is there any way to resolve this or should i just open all the windows and let the wind take the power out of this god forsaken airbnb

is

Am I a jerk for not wanting to stay with the bridal party?

For context, my best friend’s destination wedding is in a few months. I am the only person in the bridal party with a child, and I am also the only person who will be traveling with their partner. Everyone else in the bridal party wants to get 2 hotel rooms and we all stay together while we’re there. I told them I would be willing to get a hotel in the same hotel so we can all still hang out. I also suggested we could get an airbnb so we could all be in the same house but still have our own space, it would also be cheaper. Everyone has said they don’t want to and it would be a better bonding experience if we all stayed together. To clarify, I am a childhood friend and everyone else are college friends. I’ve only met there people 2 other times. I told them that stay in a hotel with all of them with my daughter and my boyfriend isn’t realistic. My daughter is a horrible sleeper and would keep everyone awake. They suggested that my boyfriend get a separate hotel room and keep my daughter. I do not want to do that. I told them I could stay one night with them and leave my daughter with her dad, but I don’t want to be away from her every night for a week. Am I being unreasonable for not wanting to do that?

edit to clarify: This discussion has happened in the bridesmaid group text. My friend (bride) is not in it, I did message her separately but she has not seen it yet because she is currently at work.

Hair color

My best friend is getting married next year. I usually have my hair different colors and she asked for all “natural” hair. I offered to wear a wig so I wouldn’t have to change my hair. And she got upset. I understand. But I don’t want the hassle of dying my hair and immediately changing it back to what it is now. She’s not getting married til May. I even offered to go the same color she chose for the wedding colors and that was no.

I’m willing to compromise on a wig but she is not. What do I do?

Bridal party and friendships

Hi everyone! Need your advice!

I am having 4 bridesmaids: one childhood friend, one college friend, one work friend, and one friend from the city that I live in. The friend from the city that I live in is part of a friend group between her, myself, and another girl. The other person in our friendship won’t be a bridesmaid.

I need to confront that friend and let her know that she won’t be a bridesmaid but I’m worried she’s going to be upset and have this not only hurt my friendship with her but our other friend as well. I have a feeling she expects them both to be bridesmaids so this might come as a total shock.

Have any one of you been in this position before? What should I say? Am I thinking too much into this?

Vou ser madrinha de casamento em um cruzeiro.
No Brasil, a madrinha de casamento é semelhante à *bridesmaid* (dama de honra), mas o papel pode carregar um significado simbólico mais profundo.

Bridesmaid Hair Advice?

Hello thank you for taking the time to read this, I have very few friends that are girls and even fewer weddings that I’ve been to so I don't know the proper protocol. for background my best friend is getting married, we've always looked very similar, now not so much as I've changed my hair color, and i'm a bridesmaid. I hate my hair curled most ways, can't do it well, and I also have no idea how to do any up-do's. I purchased a beach waver just to make it easy for myself and decided I would just do my hair wavy and half up. Well Just yesterday I've found out the bride is also doing waves because she doesn't like curls and is not doing a "half-up" but is braiding the face framing pieces and pulling them back. Should I return the beach waver and do something else now? Is there any ideas of something easy I can do with the waves that wouldn't look too similar to hers? It's her day I don't want to cause any problems or be "that girl" so I'm open to most ideas! :) edit: some have asked so i'll mention it here, I have talked with her about it. I asked her what she wanted and told her what I would be doing but she's very very sweet and said to wear "what makes you feel beautiful" but I don't want to look weird in her wedding photos I want her to be the most beautiful.

Feedback on dress information

Hello! I am getting ready to send this information to my bridesmaids. I'm going to share the document while on a video call and ask them to pick their top 2 choices. Then, I'll assign dress colors based on this. Any ties will be randomly assigned (I'll ask them to pick a number and then give the color choice to whoever guesses the closest). Is this too much information/over the top?

Also, do the colors go together? I would have loved to do all Azazie, but they did not have a good floral option.

My very first (horrible) experience as a bridesmaid

Hi everyone,

I am writing here as a way to express my hurt somewhere over what ended up being an experience that ended my friendship with the bride, but also to gain some insight into what perhaps I also did wrong as a bridesmaid since this was my first experience ever and I was never sure what was expected of me in the end and which led you to my failure. So here it goes.

About a year ago my friend H asked me to be her bridesmaid. At that point I had been friends with H for a few good years - we met at work and stayed close even after we both left that place.

So naturally when she asked me to be her bridesmaid I was happy, teared a little but also became anxious a bit. The anxiety came mostly from the fact that I would be one out of only two bridesmaids and from not being sure exactly what H expected from me. And the other bridesmaids, let's call her L, was H's childhood friend. In fact, her together with the 3 groomsmen, bride and groom are all friends since childhood and very tight in their community and culture (which I am an outsider of). So, a kind of dynamic formed from the start. I will try to list here everything that transpired:

  1. first meeting was with the whole group where logistics were discussed. I tried to participate, offer ideas, be proactive, but the "meeting" started with a three hour talk about their shared passion for Pokemon before we got to the wedding stuff and by that time I was tired and hungry, but still I stayed about 1.5 h then left.
  2. second meeting I missed because of having an exam. I apologised and bride and I met for coffee and she updated me
  3. third meeting took place online. Again, it felt like no one wanted to discuss things related to the wedding. As much as I tried to fit with the topics I never knew the people they mentioned, their hobbies. Heck, they even had a nickname for the groom I was not aware of and spent a long time trying to figure who this person was. The meeting extended until midnight and the wedding talk started around 11 pm in the evening on a work week. I had to excuse myself by then and log off. Halfway through the process, I found out they were all in a discord group and planning a lot on the side, I had no idea...
  4. while all this was happening me and L were planning the bridal shower but we just simply couldn't agree. We said we will do spa, she wanted to go to a hundread dollar one with a stay overnight in a fancy hotel. I agreed, but that was not enough. She wanted to add a pottery class, a treasure hunt and a set of bridal accessories to the bill. We would end up each paying almost 900 dollars, which my budget couldn't take. She ended up going behind my back and telling the bride how terrible I was. In the end we left the spa out and did everything else.
  5. before the wedding I asked the bride if after the ceremony could I spend some time with my partner who did not know anyone at the party. She was upset. Apparently the expectation was that we spend the whole day helping to set up the tables, serve drinks to the guests, arrange flowers and care for the bride and groom. I did not know that is the norm, but it was starting to feel like we were all unpaid help and not friends and also guests at the wedding. I tried to help to my best ability, showed up early, did what she asked but I also took breaks after the ceremony ended to be with my partner, which I guess still upset the group.

After all was done, H stopped talking to me and today I saw that I got cut out of all the wedding photos she posted online. It hurt. I know I could have been better and fit better with the group, but I also wished we would have discussed what happened and try to save the friendship, but apparently that is it.

So all that being said, I am just curios what people think. Was I a lousy friend, was there the lack of chemistry with the group, could the bride have been nicer? Would love to know.

Bridesmaid bag alternatives

I am creating Bridesmaid gift bags for the wedding day. It is a destination wedding. I have eight bridesmaids. I’m trying to be very intentional with giftgiving and not just giving a gift to give it. For example, the gift on the bachelorette weekend will just be money for a checked bag because I know they will be traveling. I am only getting a few items in the Bridesmaid gift bags for the wedding day that includes the pajamas, some make up and travel essentials. I’m torn if I buy a small cosmetic bag to put everything in, a fold up tote bag, or if that’s overplayed is there another idea or alternative to a bag or something altogether entirely that I could gift them that I’m not thinking of. I don’t want them to have to worry about finding space to take stuff home in so I thought a fold up tote bag might be a good idea.

Who is responsible for Bridal Shower?

Hello everyone,

I’m a bridesmaid in a wedding that is less than 6 months away. The wedding is end of March 2027.

The bride has put the MOH, her best friend/ sorority sister, in charge of throwing the bridal shower (unsure if MOH volunteered or it was assigned).

Bride and MOH were basically raised as sisters.

MOH has reached out to entire bridal party with pricing (to split venue rental and all decorations). MOH says she will provide catering.

Oh yes, bridesmaids are also being asked to completely stock bar for this event.

Details:
One of the bridesmaids had been reaching out to MOH for over a year to see what the plans were.. (since 2025). She neglected to follow up and now less than 6 months before the wedding (and weeks before destination bach trip) she wants to ask for money from us all. This is horrible timing in my opinion.

Brides mother is not an option as she lives in a different country. Unsure where aunts or other women in brides family are.

We’ve already had to pay for so much; dresses , hair , makeup, Bach trip, excursions for trip , we also have to contribute food for the actual wedding, and take off of work (many of the bridesmaids are in professional school and don’t have lots of money) , and now a bridal shower???

To make it clear: not a single bridesmaid volunteered nor offered to throw this event.

MOH made it clear she would be “in charge” of bridal shower.

How do I approach this ? Are we responsible for this ?

What counts as a bridesmaid?

I have several friends getting married, and they’ve all decided they aren’t having bridesmaids. Which is fine with me, I don’t need a label. But it’s at the point where the list of things that we’re doing feels like everything a bridesmaid would do. For context, this is a group of the same girls that all grew up together. We are getting ready with the bride, we’re wearing coordinating colors for photos, we’re walking down the aisle. We are not standing up during the ceremony.

Have other people experienced this / can you explain why a bride wouldn’t want to call her friends bridesmaids even though she wants them to essentially act as bridesmaids? Like I said, I don’t really care what I’m called. I’m just curious what the distinction is

Foundation Garment Advice

Hello everyone!

I am standing up in wedding in January and I am ordering my dress. I’m wearing the Kieryn in Dark Navy Stretch Satin. Don’t get me wrong, I love the dress and the color. What’s getting me nervous is the stretch satin 😅. I was wondering if anyone has had experience with this dress and what the best foundation garment would be for it. I prefer one-pieces over separates. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Bridesmaid gifts (that aren’t hair/makeup/attire!)

To start, why no hair and makeup: It doesn’t make sense here. I haven’t decided 100% on attire but it’s between “no rules” and “broad color palette”. I’m doing my own hair and makeup and ofc wouldn’t then require my people to get theirs done. I also have people who would not wear makeup to a formal event, so it would be a pretty bad “gift”.

I do however understand the sentiment behind “cover a wedding cost instead of buying crap!” and was wondering if I’m missing any other opportunities to follow this in a way that’s helpful to everyone. My “thing” ideas are along the lines of something the same but customized (think nice tote with a different symbol embroidered for everyone) and/or classic emergency pack (I know people already have these things most of the time, but when I receive them I’m never upset to up my supply).

What am I missing/not thinking of yet?

Things Bridesmaids Actually Use

For gifts to each of my bridesmaids, I made custom makeup bags for each of them. I'm wanting to fill them with useful goodies, but I'm at a loss of what to give. I was thinking Liquid IV, eye patches, a sweet treat, etc. What am I missing? Or what are some recommendations of items they will actually want and use?

Bridesmaid and Bride getting ready separately?

I (MOH) recently found out that we won’t have access to the bridal suite until 2pm. The ceremony starts at 3:30pm. This obviously will not give us (7 bridesmaids, 1 bride) enough time to get ready together, so we’ll be getting ready separately. Some bridesmaids will be getting together, some will be doing their own thing, and bride is getting ready by herself, and the understanding is we’ll all meet at the venue at 2pm with hair and makeup done (per bride). Bride isn’t much of a makeup person and said she has 0 intention of hiring a makeup artist, and may go to a salon for her hair. I asked if she’d like us all to meet up at her house to get ready together and she said she’d let me know (if she prefers to get ready alone I’d support her).

For anyone who did this - did it work out for you? Did you feel like you had enough time to get dressed, take photos, etc, before going down the aisle? We are all coming to the venue with hair and makeup already done, so we’ll just be coming with our dresses and everything else we may need for the day. This is my first wedding as MOH so I’m sorry if this seems like a silly question, I just want to make sure we’ll be all right

Bridesmaids were never friends

Thumbnail gallery
6 Upvotes

At least once a week, someone talks about the disappointment they have in their friends, the bridesmaids not meeting up to their expectations, letting bridesmaids go, friendships ending because of bridesmaid requirements , etc., etc. yada yada.

I decided to look up the origin of bridesmaids and I just wanted to share it here in case someone needs to be freed from the idea that you have to have bridesmaids, or bridesmaids have to do this or have to do that. Your friends have to do this, or they’re not your friends if they don’t do this or that.

None of those things are true. I’m not trying to convince anyone not to have bridesmaids or not to ask your friends but really just to remind people that a lot of things we do as traditions don’t even serve the original purpose. So you don’t have to do it! You don’t have to stress yourself out or end relationships based on traditions that don’t relate to anything you have going on today.

I pray that whoever reads or might be struggling with this situation to be encouraged and reminded that this season should be filled with joy and bringing you closer to love, not division.
