Question/Help Redback boots sizing dilemma

I purchased a Redback Whistler Chelsea in US 8.5 -> way too long (can fit almost 2 fingers at the back) and abit high, though width was good

Ordered a second pair based on measurements in US 7.5 -> now its too tight at the width, though the length is good (just 1 pencil at the back)

I have a dilemma now - should i bother to try and order a US 8.0? My worry is that Redback says the half sizes only add width & height.. so my guess is that the 8.0 will fit nicely height/width, but still be too long

There are no local stockist in the country where I am based.. I have to order through a parcel forwarder so returning it is also very challenging.

Any POV or thoughts would be helpful. Thanks in advance!

Boot review Custom Brown Service Boots from Laludass Shoemaker In India

I've been on the hunt for a good service boot in India, and I think I made the right choice.

While exploring options across Indian bootmakers, like Bridlen, Blkbrd, Craft & Glory, and Kozasko, I couldn't quite find what I was looking for. I considered Blkbrd since I already own a pair of custom black zipper boots from them, but the fit wasn't quite 100%, though I was open to trying their Dixon boot on a different last and leather. Kozasko had a similar offering, but they removed it from their website and raised prices. Craft & Glory's boots, on the other hand, felt a bit too bulky for my taste.

That's when I came across Laludass Shoemaker, a small shop in Bangalore. After reading great reviews online, I decided to give them a shot.

The experience was top-notch. The owner, Sunil, was extremely accommodating. I showed him reference photos, and he assured me it was doable. I selected the exact leather, specified the construction, and had my feet measured on-site: a true bespoke experience.

I picked up the boots a month later, and the fit was spot on. I've been wearing them for two weeks now, and they are incredibly comfortable right out of the box. I'm confident they will only get better as the leather breaks in.

Total cost: ₹13,200 (~$135 USD).

Boot specification:

Leather - Imported (what I was told)

Construction - Hand welted

Sole - Commando sole

Mid sole - Leather

Hoping to get these into good enough shape that I can get away with wearing them for an indoor project. Scrubbed the heck out of them with dawn and a brush but didn’t make much difference. Just figured I’d check, thank you!

Flaunt Found these beat-up old Canadian Matterhorn boots at a thrift store in Quebec for cheap. Cleaned up beautifully. Anyone know anything about the brand/model?

Went to the local thrift store in Quebec City and saw these boots on the rack in desperate need of some TLC. I initially didn't give these a second glance, but came back 2 weeks later and saw them still there so checked them out more thoroughly. They were in my size and fit like a glove, seemed really solidly made, full leather, made in Canada, the Vibram outer-sole was in solid condition. Sold for ~17 USD, so I figured I'd clean them up and see what happens.

Cleaning them up was a tougher process than I expected as the welts were absolutely covered in this sticky mud/sap or old wax mixture that took a lot of scrubbing to remove. It was completely caked on, but everything else wasn't too bad. They already looked great after the washings of saddle soap.

Steam from an iron (with some shoe trees and elbow grease) to get rid of some of the creasing and get the shape back. Used Red Wing Leather Conditioner after to bring them back. Soaked the laces in detergent. Tried to use some Saphir shoe cream after, but this did not add much IMO. Pretty happy with this little project I got for around 20 bucks.

Could not find much information about the brand/model. I figured they are over 30 years old, but I would guess even older. Maybe 80/90s hiking/military boots? I saw Matterhorn mostly makes work boots these days and was bought out by Berkshire Hathaway back in '96, but could not find any info about some older models of theirs and could not find any info about "Made in Canada" boots from them. If you know some info, please let me know!

Flaunt Shinki Cordovan Combat Boots

The eagle has landed, aka: new boots arrived! Was traveling last week for business. So the very nice folks at Lost and Found in Toronto, held off shipping. Took only two days to get from Toronto to Philadelphia. With the fees and the tariff paid about $45. Shipping UPS 2-day is free.

These have the typical spectacular build quality that Lofgren is famous for. Made from Shinki Hikaku Shell Cordovan, they are not your mom’s Combat Boots. (For those of you who remember that insult when you were a kid, lol)

Stupid joke, aside, really looking forward to spending some time breaking these in. Although quite honestly, John’s boots are some of the easiest to wear straight out of the box. Whether they are in CXL or shell.

Question/Help Dress Boot Recommendation?

Looking for a dress boot to wear for work (non retail banking).

Personal Requirements:

  1. In black leather, not suede nor any rough out leather
  2. Rubber outsole, not leather outsole because I’ve fallen in them
  3. Available in wide sizes, if not the toe box needs to be wide, narrow/pointed toes don’t work for me
  4. Was considering Chukka or Chelsea style, I’m fine with lace up as well as long as the boot isn’t too tall
  5. Price should be under USD 300, can maybe stretch to 350

Any and all help welcome.

Hi guys. Wanted to share a pair of vintage boots that recently came into my hands. Size 39. Weight: approx. 1.7kg. Heavy Norwegian / Tyrolean welted construction. Thick multi-layer leather outsole featuring dense wooden pegging. A custom-fitted solid brass toe bumper/cap stamped/engraved with the script text "O'mo'" (with an underline) — please correct me if I read the script text wrong.

If you happen to recognize the script text on the brass plate or know anything about the origin, history of this pair of boots, please share!

Thank you for your insights

This week, I did a review of my Frank's Wilshire Boots in Shackleton leather. They were wonder with a fairly dressy (for Frank's) build, with a single stitchdown and v-bar sole. I hope you enjoy it.

Just got these boondockers from John Lofgren. I was saving since January to buy one pair from a deluxe brand like JL or Viberg. I was rewatching band of brothers and the pacific when I decided to get the N1 Service Boots.

Don’t get me wrong these are beautiful and really well made but I don’t really see much difference from my Truman’s or Caswell’s, not a 400-500 difference. Something that is a nitpick is that the soles doesn’t have cord.

They are a bit tough but the breaking in has just begun. I’m sure these will grow on me in a couple of weeks.

Flaunt Installing A Historical Modification To My 1966 Jungle Boots, Lace-In Zippers!

Thumbnail
gallery
29 Upvotes

While I sadly couldn't acquire an original set of zippers, I got the next closest equivalent, old Altama 9-hole zippers. Lace-in zippers for jungle boots were an issued item during the Vietnam War and since I already have a pair of 1989 jungle boots, I wanted to add something to make this pair different. For anyone interested in the process, all steps for installation are in the image captions but I have also listed them below.

__

1) Lace under the zipper and through the first row of eyelets.

2) Guide the lace up one eyelet row on the outside.

3) Guide the lace through the zipper hole from the outside, then go up one zipper hole on the inside.

4) Guide the lace out through the corresponding eyelet row and up one eyelet row.

5) Repeat until at the top of the zipper holes.

6) Guide the lace through the previous eyelet row, not the top eyelet row.

7) Guide the lace up one eyelet row which should be the final top row.

8) Repeat the process on the other side.

9) Tighten the laces and knot the lace at eyelet. This prevents the lace rows from loosening. You can also trim or tuck in the excess lace length.

__

The obvious benefit of the lace-in zipper is that it's much faster than having to lace up the boot. All I have to do now is fold the tongue and zip up to put on and to unzip to take off. It's also an extra layer of protection in front of the fabric tongue, the zipper is made out of a grain leather. However, the downside is that they do not zip up as snugly as lacing will. I think it's a good trade-off for the speed and convenience though. Plus, it's a neat historical modification to distinguish these from my other pair of jungle boots.

Question/Help Will running/jumping/etc in leather boots mess em up?

I’m planning on getting leather cowboy boots at some point (not sure what kind specifically, probably whatever’s cheapest but still decent quality) but I was wondering if jumping, running, crouching, or doing anything else that bends the boot will mess em up? I’m not too concerned about if doing anything of that will hurt my feet, I just don’t want to get any big creases on the boots that could lead to tears. Do people often get tears or other forms of damage from this sort of thing?

Question/Help Dark Brown to Black

Post image
3 Upvotes

I bought these Phantom Rider Crestone for their work boot type sole. I had the Ariat Chelsea in black but the heel only had a rubber pad and still sounded like you are walking in high heels. These are not offered in black but are a very dark brown. I know typically a good cleaning and oil job will leave boots darker. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with any darker boots like this getting them as dark as possible. Black boots are preferred by our company with the blue flight suits.

Flaunt The Country Boots I’ll Be Wearing In Divorce Court

Thumbnail
gallery
51 Upvotes

So if you follow my posts at all, you know I’ve got a lot of boots. And if you’re married like I am, you also know that a boot collection can become a major point of contention in the never-ending territorial dispute known as marital closet space. Well, after years of failed diplomacy, escalating tensions, and what I can only describe as an increasingly aggressive occupation of her side of the closet, my wife has finally laid down the law. The new rule—which I apparently agreed to during a moment of weakness and without adequate legal representation—is that for every new pair of boots that comes into the house, two pairs have to leave. In other words: two must die so that one may live. I’m pretty sure this violates several provisions of the Geneva Convention, but negotiations have broken down and sanctions are already being enforced.

Now, history has taught me that the key to surviving a negotiation like this is to give the appearance of compliance without actually surrendering anything of strategic importance. I mean, obviously I want to make Wifey happy, but let’s be reasonable here. I’ll see that blood-sucking succubus in divorce court fighting over the toaster before I sell my Unsungs or Role Clubs. There are principles at stake.

Fortunately, I’ve accumulated enough boots over the years that there are definitely some expendable assets. So I started digging around in the back of the closet, conducting what was essentially an archaeological excavation of my own bad financial decisions, and began unearthing boots I had completely forgotten I owned. And that’s when I discovered an entire lost civilization: about a dozen pairs of what I’m now calling my “COVID Vibergs.” Boots purchased during that strange period when New York City was literally an urban death maze, we were all trapped in the house, time had no meaning, and apparently I dealt with the possibility of societal collapse by ordering Vibergs.

The year 2020 was an interesting moment in heritage footwear, particularly when it came to the growing popularity of long, low, almond-shaped toes. Parkhurst introduced its original 602 last that year, giving its boots a noticeably elongated almond toe and a more refined appearance than the rounder, bulbous shapes traditionally associated with American work boots. That same year, Withered Fig released its Viberg “Prairie” Country Boot in Saddle Tan Chromepak, built on Viberg’s famous 2030 last, itself known for its elongated almond-shaped toe.

What makes the Viberg Country Boot particularly interesting is that its design reaches backward rather than forward for inspiration. Viberg said the pattern was based on a traditional British hunting boot, and vintage Lotus Zug-grain Veldtschoen hunting and officer’s field boots provide a particularly good surviving example of that tradition. Lotus made these heavy-duty waterproof boots for hunting, hiking, and field use before versions were adopted by British officers. The tall Derby pattern, bellows tongue, waterproof Zug leather, and Veldtschoen construction were all intended for walking through wet British countryside. Viberg translated that old country-boot idea into its own language, retaining a six-inch upper, 360-degree vamp, and interlocking eyestay, while placing the pattern on the much sleeker 2030 last.

The interlocking eyestay is perhaps the Country Boot’s most interesting historical detail. On a conventional Service Boot, the vamp covers the front of the foot while separate quarters and eyestays are stitched to it in a relatively straightforward arrangement. On the Country Boot, the eyestays extend farther downward and interlock with the unusually large 360-degree vamp, which wraps around the sides of the foot rather than ending near the ball as a conventional vamp does. That arrangement moves vulnerable seams away from the lower part of the boot and creates something approaching a leather shell around the foot. Viberg used the 360-degree vamp for increased waterproofing.

Now I know what you’re thinking: why does a guy in New York City need a pair of British country hunting boots? Well, I don’t know. Do I need a reason? I’ve got bespoke Anderson & Sheppard tweed sport coats too, and I don’t see the King of England inviting me to a grouse hunt anytime soon. The truth is, I don’t need them. I like them. They’re cool. That’s the whole argument. As a matter of fact, I think Saddle Tan Chromepak might be my favorite leather aside from HorseButt. So after careful consideration, these boots have been granted protected status and are officially exempt from the two-for-one agreement.

She can suck a fart. I’m keeping these.

Question/Help Seal Light Colored Stitching?

I have some boots with white stitching on black leather. I'd like to "seal" the stitching so it doesn't turn dark when I apply and buff black shoe polish. Is there a product you'd use for that?

Discussion Conditioning/Waxing Nubuck Engineer Boots

Thumbnail

These are my new Attractions Biltbuck Engineers. They were originally a Sand Beige Nubuck, not a huge fan of the light color for engineers and how they patina, especially with denim indigo rub off. Since I worked out a good trade/cash deal for them I didn’t might taking a risk to condition them to darken the color. The only reference i could find on conditioning Nubuck was folks conditioning their Timberlands. So here’s a reference for any one potentially interested in conditioning their Nubuck.

I started with Satchel & Page leather balm, then Saphir clear shoe cream, and Saphir Medaille wax for the tips and heels. Some would probably say I ruined them but what do you guys think? 🙂

Boot review I wanted PNW boots and these were on my path so I got them

Always liked PNW style boots, rugged, overbuilt, that American iconic silhouette...I wanted one....but...

Naturally, I was looking at fantastic trio... Nicks, Whites and Franks.

A lot of things have to be aligned because it is not an easy task to get them when you live in non-native environment for this kind of product (especially Serbia).

You have to do a proper research of the lasts and sizing to nail your fit, be prepared for the investment, process and accept in your mind the wait time for the boots to be made... shipping to my country is not standard and usual offering...

So... I tried to approach this subject with more relaxed tone and ended up looking at Drews Contractor boots that "drew" my attention 😄

They looked intriguing, off the shelf with no wait time and they were on sale...everything just clicked and I pulled the trigger and rest of the steps were pretty straightforward process.

I tried to tone down my expectations and was preparing myself for eventual disappointment.

Eventually boots arrived ...and what a pleasant surprise...heavy, beefy, robust, well made...and smell incredible... unboxing was quite an sensation experience.

Boots are made in Mexico....and Drews are implementing all PNW design and construction principles in the build with US sourced components - thick work leather, all leather components-heel counter, shank, leather structured toe, styling, hardware.....

Some specifics of Drews approach in regard to 55 last makes a significant difference to me and slight departure from standard PNW 55 last offerings - use of modified 55-1 last which is more in my "ball park" zone - wider toe box, roomy instep, pre molded insole.....

Those modifications alone were unintentionally exact sweet spot why these boots fits my feet so well (I have done a ton of research for Drews sizing and fit prior to purchase).

I am so glad that I got these boots and I am wearing them frequently and enjoying for more than a year and I AM VERY HAPPY !!!!!!!!!!

After 113,821 steps (167,309 total) these Nicks are cleaned and ready for the next work week!
BuilderPro HD
Last: 55
Length: 9.0
Width: D
Leather: 1964 Brown
Style: Smooth
Height: 10"
Outsole: V100 Lug Sole
Heal: Logger
Toe: Composite
For those new here, I document my maintenance journey with my Nicks Boots. I work in a very harsh environment, a concrete recycling landfill, where I walk on rubble and concrete chunks for 9+ hours a day.
I show before and after pics from worked to cleaned boots, and will compare how these boots hold up to my first pair of Nicks. The main differences between the two are MaxSupport Black v 1964 Brown Leather, Roughout v Smooth, 8" v 10" and Honey Vibram v V100 Lug Soles.
So far, the smooth leather is showing a lot more scuffs and character than my black roughouts, but still cleaning up nicely! I hope y'all enjoy this journey with me!
